Vincent Smith Talking about Clowney Hit

Submitted by MaizeNBlueInDC on

I know we all tired quickly of the replay of Clowney's hit on Vincent Smith.  One of the guys at WolverineNation did a short article about Smith's perspective on the hit.

A good read and the best part of the article is how pissed Smith's older brother got at the endless replays for the next two weeks (can't say I blame him!).  "Smith's older brother, Jaworski Bowie, actually took the impact of the hit harder. Bowie texted his younger brother, perturbed the hit was being shown ad nauseam.  It reached the point where Smith told his brother to stop. Smith wasn't bothered by it, so why should his brother be? Besides, Smith said, he has been hit harder."

Smith's feeling on the hit reminds me of Jim Carey's great line in Liar, Liar,  "I've had better."

Bullet point approach!

THE NEGATIVES
- It was a blown assignment & easy pickings for the defender
- The RB is tiny & standing upright with little momentum

THE POSITIVES
- The defender got in fast
- The defender caused a fumble & recovered it
- Helmet asplosion

So basically, it was a golden opportunity for any defender, but Clowney made more of it than most others would have.

As hard as a hit as it was, I think it shows Smith's toughness when as soon as his back hit the ground he was grabbing for the ball that he fumbled. Not for a second was he disoriented from the hit.

There's no doubt that it was a great hit. Clowney is every bit the beast he's advertised to be.

But it's well-known that Smith is regarded as the toughest player on the team. A lesser back would have been out cold immediately, but Smith tried to recover the ball and was on his feet shortly after the play ended.

Reminds me of a line from the book Bo wrote w/  Mitch Albom, getting up after being wiped out on the sideline from a tackle during a scrimmage game:

"Hot damn, that would have killed an ordinary man!"

Old man toughness...Vincent has it.
