M Uniform Bracket - Finals

Submitted by Seth on

So, who wants another long, cathartic, vindicating take-down of a B.S. local newspaper article?

Who wants to have a meaningless tournament over which Michigan uniform is the most awesome?

Well?
Let's rip on the Freep for like the 100th time

Summer's almost over. It's back to school time. Whatever shall you wear? You want something that's going to make you stand out, that shows you are part of something great, that makes you look so good that your hot English GSI will start hitting on you in your story reviews…

But this is Michigan. So can we say the same thing, but a little more understated, a little more traditional, a little more intellectual?

That is an awesome hat.

No doubt that's why the survivors of the Final Four of our M Uniform Tournament were the first two teams in Michigan history to sport Michigan's iconic wings (or is that a forehead stache?)

That's right, the first two.

The football team had it first. Says Bentley:

The famous "winged" design dates from 1938 when Coach Herbert O. "Fritz" Crisler arrived from Princeton to begin a new era in Michigan football. Even as the design and composition of helmets evolved from stitched cowhide to high-tech, molded plastic, the winged design has remained the pre-eminent symbol of Michigan football.

The wings and stripes made their debut against Michigan State in the 1938 season opener, a 14-0 triumph in the Big House.

The hockey team took a few decades to catch on to the amazing powers of painting a mega maize mustache with soul patch and fu manchu on one's helmet. The painted helmets debuted against Bowling Green on March 3, 1989, at the start of the CCHA tournament.

And wouldn't you know it: (Red had red hair?) the jerseys were the forerunners of today's blues, including the big honkin' M in the middle of the chest.

And thus we have our two final contenders: football's home blues, and the icers' block-M blues. If you want to see the rest of the tournament, head back to the Final Four, which has the entire recap, and links to each round. If you're ready for this whole Uniform Tournament thing to be done and for the football season to start already, rotate that mouse wheel down just a tad and vote for the ultimate uniform of Michigan varsity and club varsity sports.

Go Blue!

those white hockey jerseys from the Denny Felsner / David Roberts era. That was my first UM hockey jersey, #9 (helped that shortly after Roberts, a dude named Brendan Morrison came along with the same number...)

The hole-y white material with the blue / maize striping with the blue block M outlined in maize. Damn, were those in this tournament, or was it dazzle material only for hockey uni's?

at the top. Cheerleaders are always nice (not in the creepy old man (early 30's) way, because that would totally violate the "half my age + 7" rule for me), and I love Brent Petway glaring at, well, something, right there in the middle. But my favorite women's sport seems to be missing - volleyball. Couldn't give Alex Hunt and Juliana Paz et al a little love? (again, not in the creepy old man way)

Who's that good-lookin' girl in the middle of the 2nd row, with the kickin' whites on?

I regretted not putting all the volleyball unis in the bracket. But the whites got lots of love throughout the tournament.

Example from the Sweet 16:

The perfect lines, the dainty shoulder and thigh block M's, the blue-white contrast of the pants, this volleyball uniform is a lesson in fashion smoothness. The only thing it doesn't have going for it: shirt and pant Adidas logos that are literally larger than the school's. Grrr.

They were also called "surely the find of this whole project" in Round 2. In the Sweet 16 I said "that perfectly balanced (and championship carrying) white volleyball uni is one of the best in the land." In the Elite 8, I noted their fall by one vote thusly: "Two favorites went down, including the awesome soccer duds, and, by a single vote, the lovely volleyball whites." And in the Final Four, though they were already long gone, I labeled them the "Misopofavorite," which is a portmanteau of my handle and "favorite."

I also voted for them like four times from different computers in the 1-loss vote. I don't know what more I could have done but write a stump speech. I shouted. The voters spoke. They were louder.

Damn voters.

don't know how. big fan of the volleyball team (beyond the uni's, of course). also, my wife was a v-ball player so it's one of the few random sports aside from football/b-ball i can watch on BTN without her getting on my case about watching something boring, lol

Every year is the same
And I feel it again,
I'm a loser - no chance to win.
Leaves start falling,
Come down is calling,
Loneliness starts sinking in.

But I'm one.
I am one.
And I can see
That this is me,
And I will be,
You'll all see
I'm the one.

Where do you get
Those blue blue jeans
Faded patched secret so tight.
Where do you get
That walk oh so lean
Your shoes and your shirts
All just right.
But I'm one etc.

I got a Gibson
Without a case
But I can't get that even tanned look on my face.
Ill fitting clothes
I blend in the crowd,
Fingers so clumsy
Voice too loud.

But I'm one.
