Friday night Thread for the Spreading of Holiday Cheer and Detailing of Consumption of Delicious Alcoholic Beverages

Submitted by MaizeAndBlueWahoo on

And what is everyone having as we head into the Christmas weekend?  I'm getting an earlyish Sam Adams "White Christmas" in and will probably switch later to a half-glass of Sailor Jerry's (can't get too crazy since it's an early start tomorrow on the road to Atlanta for Christmas), all the while enjoying the simple idea of being inside with Christmas music queued up on the stereo with snow on the ground and a breezy wind outside.  Beautiful evening.

Just some Sprecher Vienna Amber Lager. Nothin special. Going to watching the beef obradysbowl on the iPad... I guess... Since the wife is watching a series of terrible TV shows

It's both funny and sad that this thread should appear now - I might actually end up working tomorrow, I just learned on a conference call (called in from home). Even though we have only about 9,000 out across the DTE service territory, they still apparently want people in to make storm packages for crews. This is why I opted for the afternoon shift, of course, so that way there is a chance they call me and say "never mind". Not exactly how I planned the start to my holiday.

For now, of course, a crisp, refreshing Hoegaarden and the wait until the Beef O'Brady's St.  Petersburg Bowl.

My sons home from UM. He brought all his laundry, his TV, video game console, and a fifth of Jack Daniels Honey. I'm going to share a drink with my underage son, then ask where he got the goods.

Went to the local brewery E15 and filled my growler of Nutsack IPA. It is 46 degrees and will hit 30 tonight! WTF!

Red wine, because that is what we have left on hand after the fiancee took off for Xmas in San Jose this week. (If I still lived in Michigan, I'd be jealous. Because I live in the South, I am glad to be going back to MI.)

Dogfish Head 90 IPA at the store, but decided that I need to finish what is in the house. I think it's a Dirty Bastard for me tonight.

Getting ready to head out and do it up one more time before my brother moves to Colorado next week. I don't know what I will be drinking but I'm sure there will be lots of it!

I decided I should take the plunge and try scotch, and maybe see if I can score a bottle under the Christmas tree. I went to the big liquor store near me and got pours of Glenlivet 12 and Ardmore Traditional Cask, I liked the Ardmore better. It runs about thirty dollars a bottle, and I'm assuming there are more than a couple opinions on a good bottle to start with, preferably something under $45 or so.

I know it is pricey...but if you actually bite the bullet and take your chances on, say, an 18-year, you'll be pretty blown away by how smooth and mellow it is in comparison. My wife, who dislikes all things whiskey/scotch related, was even a convert when presented with the good stuff.

One interesting scotch that I quite liked was Ardbeg...it was like drinking a campfire. Seriously. It smelled and tasted like a campfire. Mmmm...campfire.

I think what I'll try to do is find a bar with a halfway decent selection and work my way through what you guys wrote, except for what MABW recommended since I should be able to just grab a bottle of that the next time I want a bottle of something. Otherwise, the $85+ per bottles just aren't in the cards on my student budget.

Just go with Jameson. Never dissapoints. If you're looking for something a bit more fancy you should buy Red Breast. Best Scotch/Irish Whiskey I've ever had in my life. Better than shit 10x the price IMO.

I live in Ohio -- yes, I know, please provide the requisite chorus of boos -- and around here, Great Lakes Christmas Ale is perceived as the Second Coming. Granted, it's good. I actually celebrate most of the GL catalog.

BUT...

I have told this to my Ohio-based friends, some who have scoffed at me in disgust until I actually made them do a side-by-side taste test: 12 Dogs of Christmas Ale is superior to Great Lakes Christmas Ale. Try it for yourself. It's similar -- yet, it's better. Plus, hey -- it's higher alcohol content, so it has that going for it, too.

I've been all over the place today- Yuengleng (sp?) at breakfast, Miller Lite at lunch and sailor jerry by the pool for happy hour(s). Will figure something out for the evening or just stick with Jerry.
