NBA Draft Projections for Michigan Players

Submitted by Cold War on

The folks at NBA Draft.net pretty much spend their lives speculating on that very subject and have projected three Michigan players in the 2013 draft.

Glenn Robinson, Fr., SF, #15 to Atlanta

Trey Burke, So., PG, #25 to San Antonio

Tim Hardaway Jr., Jr., SG, #31 to Washington

I'm a little surprised Burke and Hardaway aren't rated higher, particularly Burke. From a selfish perspective, they would be less likely to leave.

I don't think he will be gone after this year. He's a good player, don't get me wrong, but I don't think he's a one and done. GRIII and McGary will be great players in their time, but I think they spend a few years at Michigan. There's nothing wrong with that! I'd rather have a great team to cheer for in the coming years, as opposed to hoping these one and dones pan out and deliver in their one and only year in college.

Both because both are in different eras. You are punished if you stay for 4 years, but you can get drafted in lottery after SR year(however it's rare nowadays).

If GRIII is projected to go to the lottery, he'd be crazy not to declare for the draft where a year an change a lot and potential injury.

Beilein will tell GRIII the same thing.  If a player is a sure lottery pick, he should go.  If he is a sure first round pick, he should probably go.  Everyone else should stay.

It might seem like it sucks, but this is a great "problem" to have.  It means a lot of great talent is playing in Ann Arbor.  This bodes extremely well for the program.

Hmm... I love me some GRIII but I don't see him going 15. He's been good, but hasn't been truly dominant yet. I'd be surprised if we lost 3 players to the draft this off season. I'm thinking 2 max...or hoping I suppose.

He's been good but like Brian has noted, he's currently the 4th or 5th most dominating player in our starting 5. I could see him being #15 in another year or two

To the folks above me - the NBA draft is based ENTIRELY on potential, although once in a while talents like Derrick Williams of Zona plays their way to the #2 spot.

Think if the NFL draft was entirely based around digging up Jason Pierre-Pauls.

Case in point - Trey and TJ have stayed and improved by leaps and bounds from last year. But they are pegged still as low first rounders (or high 2nd round). Trey is projected to be Tony Parker's backup, while Junior (if he goes to Washington) will have to fight his way to start alongside Johnny Wall.

Once we play some real competition our freshmen will probably not ay as well and their draft stock will fall. I know GR is talented but he doesn't seem like the 15th best player in the country, not for another year or two at least...

McGary would go high based on what? I've heard a few people talk about McGary as a future lottery pick and I dont see it. Dont get me wrong, I like his game and glad he is filling a role here, but I think too many people are wrapped up in him being a 5 star at one point. So far he has shown he can be a good rebounder and a hustle guy, but not much NBA game. Maybe in 3-4 years, but not seeing it now.

GRIII is good and has the frame/upside to be a great NBA player, but as of now I havent seen enough of him to be a lottery pick.  The B1G season will tell everyone how good he is and what he needs to improve.

GRIII could definitely do more if asked of him but it's not really necessary with burke, thjr, and stauskas shooting they was he is. He is also being asked to play the 4 when he would certainly project to the 3 in the nba...

My hope is that THJ and GRIII stay. Burke is obviously gone, and I think with the way he is playing he will be drafted somewhere between 15-25, where last year he was viewed as a 2nd rd pick. The other 2 I think would benefit from another year, and its probably safe to say they wont have to leave because of financial situations.

Lottery is usually based on potential over production. I could see GRIII going pretty high based on his measurables and the fact that he hasn't quite tapped into that potential yet. Although I also believe he could improve his stock with another year.

What exactly has he done yet to merit that? He's got some nice talent but has shown no consistency what so ever. The one freshman making the biggest impact so far happens to be the White Shadow from Canada.

It's not about what you've done yet. It's about what you could potentially be. As great as Stauskas has played, his ceiling is not nearly as high as GRIII, who has an NBA body and athleticism. An NBA team might be willing to take that in the lottery and develop the rest of the skills as time goes on.

went 11th overall.  Stauskas is bigger, longer, has better handles and is more athletic. I'm not saying he is as good as a senior JJ Redick but he has more potential.  Are we sure Stauskas isn't a lottery pick right now?

Robinson at #15 isn't suprising to me. His impact on this team is not talked about nearly enough. He shoots the ball better than Hardway and has more athleticism. I don't think he will leave yet because he doesn't much have much responsiblity on this team yet, but I bet he will show enough to be a top 10 pick next year if both Burke and Hardway decide to leave.

Seriously, this is the 4th thread referencing NBADraft.net in the last 2 weeks. Can we at least wait until March to start worrying about their weekly mock drafts?

I haven't heard too much about him, but I think he could definitely have some draft potential with his length and his shooting. Yeah his D isn't great but its also the NBA.

Please God no. The NCAA & NBA need to sack up and make it 3 years of college play minimum to go to the NBA.

I hate the NBA. Keep away from my team.

Hmmm...maybe because I grew up in LA, but I much prefer NBA to NCAA. The only time I have any interest in college basketball is March Madness, which is admittedly amazing.

Unfortunately, I was at UM during the dark ages of our program, and I never got into it. Having said that, I wish UM all the best and hope to god the NCAA does not institute a bogus "stay in school" rule. If you are over 18, use your talents to make some money and build your career.

will be a star in the NBA, guys like him don't grow on trees, he's a leader, great shooter, great dribbler, great court awareness, can cross-over dribble like no other.

He's an Isah Thomas or Chris Paul in the making, if teams let him fall past the top ten picks, then they are idiots. Especially if they let the Spurs get him, yikes!

Burke would be a steal at #25.  I think he'll go much higher.

As for GR3; he just doesn't get the ball enough with this team to really showcase what he can do.  I think he stays and really blows it up next year; especially with another year to get stronger and more skilled.  With Trey and quite possibly THJ gone he'll get a lot more looks.

I agree.  I see Burke going in the top 10 and maybe even top 5.  Top point guards are hard to find and Burke is starting to look like a potential elite one.  Hardaway, while a good player does not have the look of an NBA star so he will likely fall into the 2nd round even with the improvements we've seen in his game.  Robinson is an unknown at this time and will likely stay another year to develop his game given his limited role so far.  If he did declare after one year, somebody would roll the dice and grab him in the first round but if he thinks he has lottery potential then staying another year to showcase improved skills would likely net him the most $ which seems to be the goal these days.

I think if it came down to it it'd be really smart for GRIII to stay. Assuming Hardaway and Burke leave, GRIII gets to really showcase his skills in the offense, instead of just hitting corner threes and racking up rebounds.

Don't really understand the people who say, "Oh, GRIII can't go that high because he isn't producing as much as other players." Ummmm when the fuck did that ever matter? It's about potential and GRIII has all of the potential in the world and already has that NBA body.

And this draft philosophy is why the NBA is crap and the College Basketball game is crap. NBA has too many crappy teams because they gamble on potential and the College game loses too many kids too early robbing us of those classic rivalries built over 4 years of kids battling each other.
