Chances of Lewis to WR?

Submitted by BILG on

I know this has been discussed here and there on the board.  Given the pickup of another defensive secondary commit, is it getting more and more likely that Jourdan Lewis comes in as a WR?

By all accounts he is a phenomenal playmaker on both sides of the ball.  I keep hearing the rabble, rabble, Hoke cant get high star skill position players, but are we overlooking Lewis as a potentially elite reciever because he was recruited as a DB.  Some reports have him looking better on the offensive side of the ball.

Treadwell would be nice but it seems that ship is moving further and further away from port.  As much as a Dymonte Thomas, Jourdan Lewis, Douglass, Stribling, and Hill secondary sounds like a real "no fly zone", I have to think that at least one of these guys would be moving to WR if we dont pick up another one in this class.

Would any of these guys be cosidered elite WR material?

Dymonte, no. He probably could be but I think he is seen as a possible elite DB so they likely will keep him there. I think Stribling moves to WR before its all said and done based on his size and apparent playmaking ability. I think the others will be based upon what happens with current WRs and how they develop. But my last name is not Hoke, Borges, or Mattison so at the end of the day I know nothing.

Jourdan Lewis may sort of end up in the Charles woodson mode (and a Heisman would be nice!), but I can easily see him as a corner who takes 10 to 12 snaps a game at WR.

You can "easily" see that? So many recruits get the "WATCH OUT this guy can contribute on offense AND defense!" treatment. But how often does that happen? Between Gamble and Woodson I'd say twice in every fifteen years in the B1G. There may be more I'm forgetting, but it's also worth noting Woodson only caught a total of 11 passes his Heisman year. If Lewis, at any point, starts on one side while getting 10 to 12 snaps on the other I'll happily eat my hat.

I think the better question is, does Lewis have a preferred position? We seem to be a little skinnier at WR than DB going into next season, so I would think the coaches would at least have a conversation about this.  Has Lewis voiced any preference between the two (or both!?!)?  The coaches have been consistent with trying to get the best athletes on the field regardless of position (see Gardner), so I expect him to have a shot at trying out at the WR position if he is open to it.

IF a defensive back recruit in this class moves to offense, it'd likely either be Jourdan Lewis or Channing Stribling. Given they are likely to take yet another DB in this class, I've actually believed there's a possibility one gets moved over.

was that "significant defensive player" out for the bowl game and maybe a couple of other players too, thread thing all about? It was pretty disturbing, does anyone really feel any of it has any truth to it?

I was reading that thread and got through the 1st page and tried to go to the 2nd and it was locked, man am I confused.

I don't see Stribling offering much that we're not already getting in Dukes, York, etc.

If any of the current receivers get moved, I think it would be Lewis.  He's got the quickness and speed to create some big plays and run after the catch, something that most of the other receivers lack.

he is the real deal, this kid remindes me of....... Yes Woodson. I was one of I am sure many tired of hearing that every good DB we  recruited was compared to Woodson . Watching his film the way no one can touch him when he has the ball  His demeaner,  the way he carries himself, looks very much like Woodson, but that is a tall order to play like Charles we'll see soon enough there is no way Lewis gets redshirted

He reminds me of Johnson. A player that isn't a man against boys. Woodson was a man against boys, and the most athletic person to ever put on a Jersey at Michigan. I know Harmon did this and that, but Woodson would have curb stomped him.

He definitely CAN play WR. We need some quickness to complement our size, especially once Dileo and Gallon exit. Not rare to find speed (D'Mario?) for this purpose.

But his highest value would be CB if he plays that better than his peers as great CBs are rare. Raymon and Courtney are marginal on an island. JT has been shaky for 2 years and owned the spot. Countess is very solid but not a "shutdown" guy who needs 0 safety help.

Are we sure Blake isn't that guy? We've only seen him as a true freshman and considering his youth he looked pretty damned good.  I'm pretty firmly against moving Lewis to WR, we already have tools like Hayes/Norfleet who are similar builds/athletically to Lewis who should be able to step in and fill in the slot.  If we move Norfleet to DB and Lewis to WR I will be oficially confused.  I still have all the faith in the world in Hoke and Co. but that move doesn't make a ton of sense to me.

How about Jeremy Clark as a wide receiver. He is real tall and and has good speed. If he has bulked up any he could be very intriguing.

He might work out, but he just seems like another project.  That's the problem with our wide receiver recruiting in recent years.  We haven't successfully recruited a stud wide receiver in years.  The best recruit we've nabbed in the last five years is Darryl Stonum, who didn't even produce that much for Michigan.  All the other guys have had significant flaws (too slow, too short, poor hands, etc.) and Stonum had the worst flaw of all - a drinking and driving problem.
