OT: Pacquiao Marquez 4

Submitted by PlayByPlay on

Pacquiao-Marquez getting under way right now, I guess I'll watch, hoping for Pacman to win so that there is no longer any excuse for Pacquiao or Mayweather to keep ducking each other...though you know they will keep ducking.

Here's the best stream I could find for those interested:

Pacquiao makes what, $30 million a fight? Had he fought Floyd in late 2010 and lost he would have missed out on 5 huge pay days that would make that $50 million look paltry by comparison.

There is also no way in hell a rematch happens. Which ever side wins is going to go running for the hills claiming absolute victory.

Playing the "Will they won't they?" gambit has been far more financially lucrative than cashing out in one lump sum.

Couldn't stay up to watch the fight.

Manny has been slowing down the last 5 fights.  I'm a big Manny fan, but Mayweather would obliterate him right now.

He needs to retire before those hits start piling up damage to his brain, and try to hold onto some of his money and enjoy life.

It's Mayweather who has done all of the ducking.  Mayweather is like the bully who draws a line in the sand, dares someone to cross it, and keeps backing up and drawing new lines if the person takes the dare.  There has always been an excuse coming from the Mayweather camp.  Now that Pac-Man's skills appear to have eroded, maybe Mayweather will finally have the courage to try and get it done.

I didn't watch this fight, but Pac-Man's last "fight" looked more like a "work."  I really hope that Pac-Man is sandbagging so that Mayweather will finally fight him.  Mayweather never fights anyone he thinks he has a possibility of losing to.  If he thinks Pac-Man is washed up, he might finally say "yes" to a fight.

Then again, maybe Pac-Man really is washed up.

Well this says you are wrong.

Seven-division world champion Manny Pacquiao reportedly agreed to fight Mayweather on March 13, 2010 for a split of $50 million.[112] However, the fight was canceled due to disagreements about Olympic-style drug tests. Mayweather's camp wanted blood tests by the United States Anti-Doping Agency, which would conduct random tests from training until the fight date.[113] The Pacquiao camp refused to provide samples, only willing to allow blood to be taken if the test were scheduled. Pacquiao's coach, Freddie Roach, stated that he would allow a blood sample to be taken if there was a cut-off date for blood testing or at least one week before the fight. In an attempt to resolve their differences, the two camps agreed to mediation before a retired judge. After the mediation, Mayweather agreed to a 14-day no-blood-testing window. Pacquiao refused, only agreeing to a 24-day window.[114] On January 7, 2010 Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum declared that the fight was canceled, offering a chance to fight Pacquiao to Joshua Clottey instead; Mayweather accepted the offer to fight Mosley

Yes, because Wikipedia is always 100% correct.

Manny agreed to a blood test 14 days before the fight:

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/05/26/10/floyd-silent-after-pacquiao-oks-14-day-blood-test

Also, there's this SI article that says it was a blood test, to a money split, but ultimately a pride issue with co-promoting a fight with Arum:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/bryan_armen_graham/02/29/mayweather-cotto/index.html

"For years, the issue of random blood testing held up Mayweather-Pacquiao. Now it's the purse split. The real issue is pride.

Bob Arum promotes Pacquiao. Mayweather is his own boss, contracting Golden Boy for promotional duties on a fight-by-fight basis. Arum used to promote Mayweather before Floyd left acrimoniously in 2006. Mayweather would rather pass on the richest prizefight in history than co-promote it with Arum."

So, let's look at the facts:

1 - Blood testing.  Floyd would get tested the day of the fight, Manny would OK testing 14 days before the fight.  Who looks better?  Floyd.

2 - Purse.  "He faces Floyd Mayweather, he's not getting 50-50," Mayweather said of Pacquiao.  "Not at all. No one is getting 50-50."  Floyd offered Manny $40 million with no PPV cut, while Floyd would be taking 100+ million in the PPV buys.  Pacquaio's advisor made a counter offer of $50 million each, a 45/45 split of the PPV gate, and the winner getting the remaining 10%.  Floyd rejected it.  Who looks better?  Manny.

3 - If Floyd really didn't want to co-promote the fight with his former promotor Arum, then obviously Floyd is the loser in this situation too.

Hate Pacquaio all you want, but stop denying the facts.  The random blood testing was an issue two years ago.  Recently, it was a money issue.  Maybe they were just ducking each other the whole time.

I wasn't "denying the facts" as you put it.  I simply replied to tater with a post showing that they were, in fact, both dodging each other.  Because he made the assertion that it was all Mayweather.  I didn't see any "hate" for Pacman in my previous post at all.  Like I said, I just provided evidence to show that Tater is wrong.

Thanks for playing.

Are you serious?

In 2009 Mayweather absolutely destoyed Juan Manuel Marquez...same guy who fought Pacquiao 4x...same guy who drew him (and arguably won decisons in fights 2 and 3) before knocking his head off last night.

The 2009 JMM was a better fighter, younger, faster etc.

Mayweather didn't duck that fighter.

Pacquiao fans...srsly.

A gigantic portion of Floyd's drawing power is dependent upon his being undefeated (in addition to being a villain). If Floyd loses, the rematch will necessarily lose a whole lot of its luster.

If Floyd wins he won't fight Pac again, guaranteed.

You're assuming that no matter the outcome, whichever side wins isn't going to flee for the hills and "Nana nana boo boo!" the other side until the end of eternity.

You've hit one of the primary reasons that UFC has supplanted boxing in the eyes of millions of younger fight fans all over the world.

I prefer to watch boxing myself, but UFC is doing now what boxing used to do all the way up until the late 80s: make sure that fights between the elite fighters in each weight division happen with regularity. That's the exception rather than the rule now in boxing, especially in the heavyweight division. The proliferation of different boxing organizations and their title belts in combination with crooks like Bob Arum and Don King have made the sport a shadow of what it used to be.

The thing that MMA has going is that the UFC is controlled by one guy and what he says, goes. You hear it all the time from guys in UFC. If Dana says they will fight so and so, they will fight them. Boxing doesn't have that control. This is not to mention that Dana also does a nice job with some catch weight stuff that people want to see. I still think we will see a GSP/Silva fight in the future because that's what people want to see and Dana understands that.
