Friday Night Open Thread

Submitted by justingoblue on

What's the MGoCommunity up to tonight? I've got a quiet night at home going on with some Fat Tire and Jameson; music on right now, maybe a movie later on.

Anyone up to anything good? Bad? Drinking anything good? Bad? Listen to any good music lately, or see a good movie?

M Women's Volleyball beat MSU tonight, for those that missed it, and will advance to the Elite Eight. MBB gets ready to avenge a loss to Arkansas tomorrow at noon. Hockey is off this weekend.

I'm watching Kingdom of Heaven while drinking some Hoegaarden and finishing up my urban policy exam...the first two parts are pretty good, the latter not so much.

It's been a quiet evening. The wife is at work, the kids are asleep, and I poured myself some Strongbow and sat down to watch "Moneyball". Now that this is over, there is the Sam Houston St. versus Montana St. game for my football fix, or sort of just listen to the game and read MGoBlog into the wee hours as I do most Fridays.

There's also some music in the background - Falco, actually.

"Dreh dich nicht um

Der Kommissar geht um

Er wird dich anschau'n und du weisst darum

Die Lebenslust bringt dich um...

Alles klar, Herr Kommissar?"

Had my work holiday party this PM; forced to be Santa.  All the pictures with Santa today include Santa's beer.

Wife has an upper respiratory infection so she's asleep on the couch.  On my 2nd Weihenstephaner Oktoberfestbier wondering what to buy on Amazon.

I'm digging into my traditional Sam Adams holiday sampler, and saving the best beers for last, which means I started today with one of the Holiday Porters (solid as porters go, but porters aren't my favorite things in the world) and I'm about five minutes from cracking one of the plain old Boston Lagers (c'mon guys, with all the different beers that have been in this thing over the years, can't you resurrect one to replace the basic one I could've easily gotten if I'd wanted?)

Drinking some Pepe Nero and trying to work on an auditing project before my group meets tomorrow.  Really want to eat popcorn and watch something on netflix.  Any suggestions for netflix?

A bit out there but I was surfing through the stream-able movies the other night to find something interesting to watch and stumbled upon a movie called Balibo.  It's about the story of 5 Australian reporters who went into East Timor to report on the invasion of Indonesia in the mid-1970s.  Not for everybody but a suggestion, nonetheless!

(FTR, the suggestion of the movie is what I meant by out there, as I don't think it was a box office hit by any means.  The movie itself is not "out there".)

There are good days and bad ones. Somehow cracking open a Zombie Dust when I got home tonight made everything a little better. Then a Cigar City Tocobago Red Ale followed by another Zombie Dust and those demons are on the run. Just finished a nightcap of Breakfast Stout while having a bit of Vosges chocolate with bacon. Yes, there is hope for a better tomorrow. Night all.

This reminds me of something my dad used to say. Except I understood what he was talking about.

Fuzzy wuzzy wuz a bear
Fuzzy wuzzy had no hair
Fuzzy wuzzy wuzn't fuzzy
Wuz he?

No, he wuzn't. See? It's just a hairless bear. But this bird?!? Did the toucan write that? What the hell is that toucan talking about? Do toucans even talk? Do toucans drink? If so, why Guinness? BadFish is so confused, drinks more bourbon... Gets more confused...

Well aren't we the anarchist bunch tonight.  Working, so my smart-ass is at the bottom of the list as far as "having a good night" is concerned.  Probably hit up a watering hole after work with the GF and throw a couple back.  Wish I had the beer options many of you have; it's a bit lacking down here in Iowa (of course there's some good stuff to find but many of the beers mentioned on here I want to try and the beers I have tried and want to purchase to consume more of, are not sold in these areas).

How's everybody like the new Led Zeppelin album, Celebration Day?  (For those who don't know, they put on a show back in 2007 with John Bonham's son, his dad being the original drummer, playing drums.  The album of said concert came out a few weeks back.)  I have to say I dig most of it.  It's not the greatest thing ever, but all things considered, I think they did a pretty good job of reliving some of the great songs.  My opinion anway.  (For the record, I'm in my "twenties").

Also in my "twenties" and a big classic rock fan. I'm more of a Pink Floyd fan and I have a special place in my heart for Jethro Tull, but also love Zeppelin and many others. I knew they played some shows a few years back but hadn't heard of a new album, but you can bet your ass I will be picking up a copy at best buy first thing tomorrow morning. Thanks for the heads up and here's to hoping that Iowa gets the kind of microbrew collection that Grand Rapids, Michigan has. It truly is a great beer city and I consider myself extremely lucky to live within a few blocks of bars like "Hopcat" ranked 3rd best beer bar in the world by Beer Advocate Magazine. And "Stella's" a bar featuring 200+ types of whiskey and GQ Mag's "best burger in America" and the new Grand Rapids Brewing company, home of the most excellent local brews and seriously amazing bar food. The kicker is, all 3 are owned by the same guy. He is my hero, he also has a lot of my money.

Believe it or not, the life of a firefighter isn't as glamourous as they show on TV. Right now I'm in my recliner watching Entourage, eating nachos, and getting paid for it. Soon I'll go to bed, I'll get paid while I do that too. It's pretty rough.

According to thewolverine magazine (Rivals publication), his 15 TDs in November (9 passing, 6 running) are the most for any month for any QB in school history.

So I'm reading that. And having a Stella while the wife and boy sleep.

Finals coming up in a week, so I'm staying in tonight. Splitting my time between studying and watching Arrested Development on Netflix. Why did I not watch this show earlier?

Perhaps because you didn't have finals coming up and thus didn't need to procrastinate?

Just kidding...(kind of ... I know I tended to discover engaging diversions at times when I shouldn't have been diverted).

Are you really calling out the college kid who's staying in on a Friday night to study for poor study habits? I'm the least of your worries right now bub.

On another note, I think that's the first time I've used the word bub in about...10 years? Wow.

I, too, didn't watch Arrested Development until I got to college.  My roommates would talk about it all the time so I finally sat down and started watching it over xmas break my freshman year and holy crap was I missing out.  I've now gone through the series 3-4 times and still pick up things the writers subtley put in.

Such a good show.

Better late than never.  Also, I watched the first two seasons as a middle schooler, if I recall, and thought it was a kind of funny show.  I went back this past year and did the same as you are doing.  Man, did much of that show go over my head back then or what.  So...It's a show that's better as you get a little older/mature(?)/wiser anyway!

Interesting take on the show.

I can't say I'd agree with that.  At the same time, I haven't thought too particularly hard about that show;  I keep to an open, simple mind (not saying the show is simple) toward it and just look forward to the next episode each week.  I'm truly curious as to why you think it's an incoherent mess?  I don't want to be a sheep following a mess; enlighten me!
