Capital One Bowl Rematch vs Alabama

Submitted by yzerman19 on

Is it just me, or would a UGA win over Bama sending Bama into a possible rematch v UM be a fantastic opportunity?  Am I the only one who think a rematch v Bama would be a no-lose chance at redemtion and national respect for the conference in general?  We are a much better team now than we were in back in Dallas, and a disappointed Bama team could be had.  Or maybe it's just me.

I'm really not sure. Not sure enough to neg a guy into Bolivia anyway (jesus, guys, how touchy can we get? I've never been this scared to post something semi-rational)

I honestly think we would have had a better shot at Bama later on. If we had Devin/Denard going like we should have against OSU, and if we had Mattison cackling with knowing glee at his defensive masterpiece, and we had some luck and brunette girls intervention, none of you think we would at least look respectable? That's fair, but it could be closer than you guys think, if We On like we can be on.

the Capital One Bowl already was discussing the otehr day matchups and they wouldnt even be interested in a rematch. they want a game where fan bases are excited to play a new different school and to travel somewhere for that game. both bama and michigan fans already experienced this game in a travel situation and more than likely wont be anxious to do the same thign again. this rematch, even if plausible w a bama loss, wont happen per the $$$$$$$$$$$$ the bowls want

I had read the same thing, and here is Rittenberg's short discussion of that very thing (i.e., avoding a rematch) from yesterday regarding what the Capital One Bowl would like to do.

http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/colleges/post/_/id/7893/

According to this, the Capital One bowl cannot select a Big Ten team with two more wins or two fewer losses than another Big Ten team, so if Nebraska loses on Saturday, we won't go to the Capital One Bowl by rule. If Nebraska wins, on the other hand, we are the preferred selection from the Big Ten. I have seen a few pieces out there stating that Texas A&M is still trying to make a case for a Capital One appearance too.

It's possible that if Alabama loses they fall all the way to the Chic-Fil-A. Here's how it would happen. First, the SEC selection order is Cap 1 > Cotton (SEC West)/Outback (SEC East) > Chic-Fil-A > Gator, etc... The Cap 1 is obligated to take the team with the best record remaining or a team within 1 loss.

In this scenario, Georgia and Florida to the BCS.

Cap 1: Unless Nebraska loses, they'll take Michigan, as the only other option is Northwestern. Wanting to avoid a rematch, they take one of the other teams within 1 game of Alabama. Attractive options include A&M with Johnny Football or LSU for the long awaited Miles-Michigan game. South Carolina also an option, though not as attractive.

Cotton: If A&M is available, the Cotton will grab them in a second. They might also prefer a LSU team that hasn't played in Jerryworld this year to Alabama.

Outback: Unless they go against pattern, they'll take South Carolina as they usually take a team from the SEC East while the Cotton takes a team from the West (not sure if this is contractural or just informal split with the Cotton Bowl).

That leaves Alabama to the Chic-Fil-A.

Isn't the Cotton Bowl more likely for the loser of the SECCG? I think the Cotton Bowl has surpassed the Capital One Bowl in terms of payout and last year they took the third-best SEC team (Arkansas) last year and the year before that (LSU in 2010). I doubt Alabama would be ok with giving up millions in bowl revenue because they didn't want to play in Jerryworld again.

It's the Cotton Bowl's call, though, not Alabama's. If Texas A&M is available (and the Cap 1 Bowl, which has first choice of non-BCS SEC teams, seems to be very interested in a Miles vs. Michigan matchup), the Cotton will certainly take A&M before Alabama, given the local fan base and Alabama's opening game at Jerryworld. Alabama vs. LSU is a tougher call, but still might swing LSU's way.

If Nebraska loses, of course, all this calculus goes out the window and Alabama is almost a lock for a Cap 1 game vs Nebraska.

Eh, if we lose to them again it will give us an inferiority complex, and will only validate the sec. What if we lose by even more points? If we win people will just say they didn't get up for a lesser bowl. I personally don't want to see a rematch.

Bowls are about revenue and buzz. A rematch of Michigan and Alabama would bring none of that. It would be an assumed blowout of Michigan so are fans wouldn't go and most likely Bama fans wouldn't go. If we end up in the Capital one bowl it would most likely be against A&M. IMO.

will go to a BCS game win or lose.  If Bama beats Georgia, Florida will go to the Sugar Bowl, if Georgia beats Bama, Bama will go to the Sugar Bowl.

And no, let's let Bama be for now.  They left no room for doubt in Dallas and I think Michigan would be better off meeting up with them again somewhere down the line.

think that is the case.  I may be wrong, but I don't think there is any rule requiring a bowl to select any particular team from a conference based on number of losses if the conference champion is taken to play in the national championship game.  If Bama had three losses I think what you say would have to be the case but not as long as they don't have more than two losses and are otherwise BCS eligible based on ranking. That is my understanding of things.  I think the Sugar could pick at will between Florida and Bama, (and LSU and South Carolina for that matter).  I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

EDIT - Just read the Saban thread and I stand corrected (And I agree with Nick Saban that that is BS)

If Florida is ranked #3 after the SEC Championship game (which seems almost assured) they're guaranteed selection to the BCS. The only exception would be if two SEC teams were playing in the championship game.

5. If any of the 10 slots remain open after application of provisions 1 through 4, and an at-large team from a conference with an annual automatic berth for its champion is ranked No. 3 in the final BCS Standings, that team will become an automatic qualifier, provided that no at-large team from the same conference qualifies for the national championship game.

Which is garbage and why no one should be allowed to play in the BCS if someone beat them in their divisions. If the SEC feels that their top teams get systematically hurt, nothing is stopping any of them from leaving and joining another top conference.

Generally speaking bowls hate to schedule rematches even if the original was a GOOD game.  Slaughters really dont generate much do-over excitement.

Call me crazy, but Id like to play A&M. Ya Johnny Football would be hard to stop, but I think our D would be up to the challenge. Also, out of our likely opponents, I think wed have a way better chance scoring on A&M, than anyone else. Plus, look what happened last time we played the Heisman winner.

I don't buy the hype that they would be disappointed and "had".  They're still better than anyone else on our schedule and we had three other losses as well, not to mention the two games we could've lost to Northwestern and MSU.  I'd rather take our chances with a team not stocked full of future NFLers.

Yes, it's just you... and apparently you'd enjoy seeing Michigan get its ass pounded again. You'd enjoy seeing another brilliant game plan crafted by our genius OC that will send Vincent Smith up the middle on third and 3. Repeatedly.

Well, on the days that I plan on curling up in the fetal position and sucking my thumb at some point, I find that watching a good Michigan a--whipping usually gets me in the mood.  So, no, its not just you.

a tropical storm with 10 inches of rain and howling wind, an officiating crew with an anti-SEC agenda, a suspension of 18 Bama starters, and Nick Saban's sudden interest in trying the speed spread.

Until then, hell no.

Of course for the reasons stated above it's highly unlikely. We should not be looking for a match up that favors us. We should be looking for the toughest competition available. Period. Play the best. Beat the best. Be the best. Hide from no one. Won loss records mean nothing if all you beat are baby seals. This is Michigan fergodssakes.
