Conley to visit Ohio this weekend.
According to Kyle Meinke and Scout:
Michigan commit RT @BillBankGreene: Gareon Conley to visit Ohio State this Saturday. http://bit.ly/QcZbRD
November 22nd, 2012 at 4:52 PM ^
Seriously. One minute everybody is all in favor of our recruits taking visits and bashing Hokes policy, and now they're bashing recruits for going where they want to go. GTFO with that crap. Kid can do what he wants.
November 22nd, 2012 at 6:55 PM ^
You don't seem to get it.
November 22nd, 2012 at 5:18 PM ^
Loyalty, its so 19th century. Who needs it.
On another note, I could be wrong but you appear to be one of the many that misunderstand the policy. Its a great policy that basically says Michigan will hold your scholarship as long as you remain committed. Its is absolutely laughable for recruits to say they are "committed" but look at other schools and in some cases still list favorites. That is not committed, that is just holding a spot while you make a decision.
November 22nd, 2012 at 5:48 PM ^
No, I do understand the policy, in pretty much the same terms as you described it. Michigan will not hold scholarships for recruits who take other visits and who essentially allow themselves to continue to be recruited. I got that; I undestood it all along and I am thinking you must have missed the part where that is pretty much what I wrote.
And I didn't even criticize the policy as such. I said I had no problem with it. I simply said it should not be viewed as a loyalty test; it is Hoke's way of dealing with the pre-signing day period.
If we took the policy as somehow having determined that Gareon Conley was "disloyal," we ought to think about never allowing him near Ann Arbor again, unless he is on an opposing team bus. But if we took the policy as part of the recruiting numbers game, we might be able to find a place for him later if it turned out that the numbers work out that way.
November 22nd, 2012 at 7:19 PM ^
not a single recruit that has taken a visit elsewhere has come near Ann Arbor again... Dawson is now deciding between MSU and OHIO...its not just that the scholly isnt held.. they are no longer recruited after breaking their commitment
All that being said..what if he just wants to pull a David Boston or Maurice Clarett? Would Hoke let him do that?
November 22nd, 2012 at 8:15 PM ^
But so far, the sample size is small. Which is why made a point of saying that I wouldn't be counting on Conley to stay blue, but that I was looking forward to the first case to break the rule.
November 22nd, 2012 at 8:47 PM ^
I think the rule is fair, but I would like to have kept Pharoh and Dawson in these classes. I guess im kind of torn on the issue.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:13 PM ^
That's some bullshit
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:15 PM ^
It's probably best in general not to get too attached to recruits before signing day.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:17 PM ^
last thing I'd like to see is a player who doesn't really want to be here.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:17 PM ^
Don't come back were done with you.
November 22nd, 2012 at 5:20 PM ^
Conley seems to have played this as honestly as possible and, from what I know, been very upfront with the coaching staff. I see no reason he would lose his offer, unless someone else takes his spot while he opens things up. He has been much more open and honest about this than others that have lost their spots over the last two years.
November 22nd, 2012 at 7:58 PM ^
Regardless of the outcome of the no visit policy, I notice that I never see a player or staff member bad-mouthing a decision by a fellow commit/recruit/player/student/dude.
We the MGoBloggery could learn a lot from that.
November 22nd, 2012 at 8:20 PM ^
Amen.
November 22nd, 2012 at 8:34 PM ^
Thank you. Some people act as if Conley is about to commit a crime of some sort. I respect and agree with Coach Hoke's policy. At the same time, I find absolutely no need to bash or not wish anything but the best of luck for Conley and similar recruits. They are still kids, and I can understand committing too early at that age especially if the recruit didn't receive high level offers from the get go. Whining about the wish washy nature of a high school kid is pretty absurd in my opinion.
November 23rd, 2012 at 3:43 PM ^
Not that I think they would, but coaches are not permitted to discuss recruits until they have signed a LOI.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:18 PM ^
Or is he just going to the game, and they are taking that running with it. This would be the perfect game for him to go to campus and just say he's watching Michigan play Ohio
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:42 PM ^
Unofficial, but he'll be on the sidelines with the rest of the recruits. It's hard to resist a front row seat
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:22 PM ^
This is why we need to take "Michigan is my dream school, I was a huge fan growing up" with a grain of salt
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:25 PM ^
He has been open and upfront throughout this process. If he visits Ohio this weekend, he knows the coaches will no longer hold his spot open. At least he didn't do it behind the coaches back. If he decides in the end that Michigan is the place to be, and there are spots open, I would welcome him back.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:26 PM ^
Bye bye! I don't wish you good luck! Fuck Ohio can't wait to beat that ass and I hope he has a front row seat!
November 22nd, 2012 at 6:02 PM ^
I just told a friend of mine whose a Buckeye that I hope Michigan fans react with more class and respect than Buckeye fans did last year....
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:26 PM ^
another one of the players we have offered decide to commit and grab his now open spot...
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:28 PM ^
Kind of feels like a slap in the face. He couldn't have picked any other weekend? Jeez
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:46 PM ^
It is a slap in the face. Total disrespect. He should be cut loose and forgot about.
November 22nd, 2012 at 4:56 PM ^
Well he could just go to Ohios next game......oh yeah. No he couldn't possibly have gone to another Ohio game at this point.
November 22nd, 2012 at 7:38 PM ^
Then he should have gone to one before. It's very disrespectful to go on a visit to a school who is playing the school you're committed to.
November 23rd, 2012 at 7:04 AM ^
Regardless of sanctions, this would be OSU's last home game.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:28 PM ^
Hoke made a commitment to him and he made a commitment to UM. Hopefully he stands on the Blue sideline Saturday to see the respect, passion and character of UM in the snake pit.
Four years in AA is the best choice, but good luck if he chooses a 2nd class education and win-at-all-cost program.
Upward and onward for Michigan either way.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:33 PM ^
You all are way over the top on this. If he visits Ohio, that is his choice. It doesn't make it worse that he is visiting during The Game - I see it as better. This would be the best game to go to the entire year, and we know he has interest in UM as well - so why not?
He has been open and upfrot with the coaches. There is a real chance that this could end up with him recommitting depending on how his visits go and who signs in the meantime. If so, this thread will be a head-hanging wall of shame. I'm not saying that he will recommit, but there is a legit chance.
November 22nd, 2012 at 4:15 PM ^
You're right that at least he gets to see Michigan too, which will be helpful if we play well and get a win. But, the potentially bad thing about that is he is visiting our rival when they play us. That means not only is he visiting our rival and listening to the normal pro-OSU propaganda. But, he is also learning how to hate Michigan and learning about the rivalry from the perspective of OSU while being surrounded by OSU players and coaches. So, in a way he is learning how to hate Michigan. He will be surrounded not only by pro-OSU agendas, but also neg-UM agendas all day to a degree that would only happen if they played us. That is what is dangerous about it. The only way it's good for us is if all the negative talk about Michigan upsets him because he still likes us. But, the potential to make him go the other way, especially as an Ohio native is very real IMO.
November 22nd, 2012 at 9:33 PM ^
Conley lives in Ohio. I'm sure he already hears enough pro-Ohio/anti-Michigan crap already.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:35 PM ^
Conley was barely on anyone's radar until Coach Hoke gave him a scholarship. He was nothing until Hoke found him, which raised his profile considerably. As it is now, he wants to play WR more than DB and Michigan recruited him as a DB. Next.
November 23rd, 2012 at 7:02 AM ^
"He was nothing until Hoke found him"
I could do without bulls*** like this being posted. This is an extremely stupid statement.
November 23rd, 2012 at 8:25 AM ^
Are you under the impression that Hokes offer made him a better player or something?
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:36 PM ^
If this means we start working harder to get McQuay, then I hope he has a fantastic time. McQuay is ready to play right away.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:37 PM ^
Good luck to him.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:37 PM ^
Let Conley be. It is his decision. It is his loss in the end. Not going to wish him luck because I cannot stand anything about Ohio. I am upset I have to drive through the state to get to Michigan.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:41 PM ^
Hoke wants players who want to be here, and those kids WILL BE successful. If you want to visit other schools then hold off on committing
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:42 PM ^
I heard LTT is having thoughts about TCU now. Anyone else hear this? Rumor is he likes them now as well. Wtf!
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:44 PM ^
LTT is solid blue.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:46 PM ^
In Cali it's being reported once again.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:47 PM ^
He just tweeted don't believe what you read.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:45 PM ^
but what's saying this isn't just him going to the game, besides the fact that he has discussed visiting there before? Isn't OSU not that far from his house?
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:48 PM ^
if he wants to go to ohio, that's his choice. if he wants to stay, great. but if not, hopefully we'll get mcquay in the fold.
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:52 PM ^
I trust the coaches ability to evaluate talent. However, he's only a 3* for a reason. He's replaceable!
November 22nd, 2012 at 1:53 PM ^
LTT is solid Michigan, simple as that
he even had a mcfarlene figure recently made of himself with # 72 on it in the maize and blue
November 22nd, 2012 at 2:55 PM ^
This is 100% true, my father-in-law is actually the one who made it for him...
November 22nd, 2012 at 5:59 PM ^
Please follow that up with, he paid full price.
November 22nd, 2012 at 9:13 PM ^
No worries, he paid for it....just kind of a cool story though seeing those figures on here and that he got to make one for LTT, he's also made them for Jake Long and Rick Leach in the past....i have a ton of them too!
