OT: Auburn program under investigation by NCAA

Submitted by Brown Bear on
Shocking news of the day. Auburn program being investigated for potential improprieties involving Auburn recruits, players, coaches, representatives of the school's athletic interests and third parties. The real question is will the NCAA actually do anything? Link http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--sources--ncaa-investigating-auburn-…

So when does Ole Miss get hammered. They don't win games, they rarely ever go to a bowl game and I couldn't even tell you the head coach off hand. But the number one recruit in the country is suddenly about to commit there. I don't get it.

"Will the NCAA really do anything?"  Of course they will.  If we were talking about Ohio State, USC, or Bama, they would let them off as lightly as possible.  Since Auburn isn't an "old money" team, they will get hammered.

I realize that this is the conventional wisdom (that the NCAA just slaps the wrists of its traditional powers), but you could make a case that Penn State, Ohio State, and USC all have been hit much harder recently than just about anyone expected.

it's more an order of operations issue. If the investigation follows or is concurrent with a relative fall from grace in the school's on-field performance, then expect a harsh penalty. Otherwise, wrist-slap.

it would not suprise me one bit that auburn boosters would cooperate with the NCAA to get Chizik fired sans buyout even if it meant sanctions against the program. to an SEC school, sanctions are just a "down period" in the program and not a damning indictment of cultural rot at the university (see: Alabama in the "Shula years", Kentucky every other year, etc etc)

So now NCAA sanctions are a tool used to get out of contracts for university gain. Hopefully the NCAA catches on and lays the smack down. But I doubt they will. Auburn will probably get exactly what they want from this.

Sidenote-have those Indiana kids been cleared to play yet? Rather absurd for the NCAA to suspend them for 30% of the season but suspend Muhammad only 10% for the exact same offense. Way to ALWAYS get it wrong NCAA.
