Keita Bates-Diop to Ohio State
Keita Bates-Diop just committed to Ohio State. What the heck just happened here? I thought someone predicted he was going to commit to Michigan a couple days ago.
WolverineNation ESPN @WolverineNation

Cruel man.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:11 PM ^
Chalk up another victory for Chris Balas and The Wolverine. Can somebody explain to me why these pay-for-insider guys aren't going out of business in the Twitter era?
November 18th, 2012 at 1:26 PM ^
I don't think you can fault them too much. Some recruits like to "have fun" with the recruiting process, which can mean telling other schools what they want to hear. If the kid told our staff "I'm coming" and they relayed that to Balas, what is he supposed to do?
November 18th, 2012 at 1:36 PM ^
I know I sound like a broken record, but Balas is as worthless as they come. Their position was, is, and always be "who cares about basketball". These days the answer is...quite a few people jackass.
November 18th, 2012 at 1:51 PM ^
Balas is terrible at his job. He is also a tool.
November 18th, 2012 at 5:32 PM ^
Good for the kid, we won't get everyone, not worried about our class, OSU wasn't going to stop getting good players, etc.
But damn the reaction to people "stealing his valuable content" by posting what he said here when he was charging people for worthless insider crap just tickles my funnybone. Does he gift a refund when he is totally wrong?
November 18th, 2012 at 12:11 PM ^
WTF. Not cool. I'm really starting to hate that Ohio State.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:13 PM ^
Screw those guys
November 18th, 2012 at 12:12 PM ^
Welp, that sucks. Aren't gonna win them all, though. Sucks to see a great recruit go to a rival, but Coach B will get his guys.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:13 PM ^
Poop.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:14 PM ^
Guess Ohio backed the truck up.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:53 PM ^
Yea I was just thinking the exact same thing. After tattoo gate I don't trust those guys as far as I can throw em.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:15 PM ^
This is a complete shocker... almost every report had it down to Illinois and Michigan with Purdue and OSU on the outside looking in, and now he commits out of nowhere to OSU.. crazy
So unfortunate that our rivals are going to get a stud who was a perfect fit in Beilein's system.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:15 PM ^
This is a huge blow... Most 'Insiders' pegged this as a Michigan/Illinois battle with Michigan in the lead...
Not sure if we have a ton of targets in '14 anyway....Good chance that the '14 class will need to be an immediate impact too if some of the '12 guys leave early
November 18th, 2012 at 12:18 PM ^
I didn't want him anyways. Can't use proper grammar in his tweets so he's a good fit for OSU.
Totally kidding here. I did want him, and am not judging him based on a twitter oversight. But oh well, let's hope for Blueitt and Booker.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:19 PM ^
You win some and you lose some. If Michigan can go out there and finish the season as strong as they are capable of our 2014 recruiting class will take care of itself. I think this team is capable of a Final 4 appearance, and I wouuldn't rule out a NC appearance. McGary, GRIII and Stauskas will only improve as the season goes on. I really haven't been overly impressed with OHIO at the start of this season, and can easily see the Big Ten coming down to Indiana and Michigan.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:21 PM ^
Wasn't this guy supposed to commit to us? Strange.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:22 PM ^
BEAT OHIO
November 18th, 2012 at 12:27 PM ^
How many spots does TOSU have for that recruiting class, and more importantly, how does this effect our position for Tate. They both seem destined for Small Forward...
November 18th, 2012 at 12:33 PM ^
Wasn't it a top 3 of Illinois, Purdue, and Michigan the whole way? This is the first I had heard of him even being interested in Ohio
November 18th, 2012 at 12:34 PM ^
LOL, I like this kids MORE now, since he totally trolled the creepy recruitnicks at the wolverine
November 18th, 2012 at 12:37 PM ^
Well, if this means they can't take Tate, then I'm fine. KBD is a great prospect but so is Tate, and its always nice to steal a hometown prospect from Ohio
November 18th, 2012 at 12:39 PM ^
Do you really want a guy with a hyphenated last name playing hoops for us?
November 18th, 2012 at 1:07 PM ^
Signed,
A Mom of kids with a hyphenated last name.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:40 PM ^
Could've sworn that this kid was looking for good academics in a program. It's disappointing when a kid says that and then goes and commits to Ohio State
November 18th, 2012 at 12:42 PM ^
Dude just stop. You sound tired when spewing this crap. OSU has fine academics.
November 18th, 2012 at 12:53 PM ^
I suppose you could frame it that way. But when you are an elite athlete and you genuinely feel that way about academics, you could leverage your abilities to get a degree from Stanford, Duke, et al. Nobody who places a priority on academic excellence is going to OSU.
November 18th, 2012 at 1:14 PM ^
yes they does. i graduated from their in 2002 and i would of been valadictorien if i wouldn't of stoled them peaches from gordon gee.
November 18th, 2012 at 1:20 PM ^
Mom and apple pie generic statements like this mean nothing. Comparison to whom is the question? Compared to SEC, yes, OSU has fine academics, compared to Northwestern, Michigan, Duke, Stanford, Cal-Berkley? Not so much......
November 18th, 2012 at 1:37 PM ^
UM fans make the continual mistake of thinking that just because the University of Michigan is one of the most highly-ranked public universities in the nation that it's impossible for kids to obtain a quality education at other schools. One of my cousins got her undergrad degree at MSU, and today she's one of the nation's most respected educators in veterinary science and has developed innovative teaching software that's now being used all over the world (sure, go ahead with the snide jokes about Moo U while you eat your beef and chicken). If KBD is serious about his studies, he'll get a good education from OSU.
However, specific individual achievement aside, there is no way a degree from OSU or MSU equals one from UM in the eyes of the business and academic world in general. My brother has taught at MSU for over 30 years, and he'd laugh at the notion that the MSU student body in general is at the level of UM's.
November 18th, 2012 at 1:25 PM ^
There's no context here at all. People look at schools as rankings, naked and out of context. If there's a particular program that he wants to study in that he prefers at one school, and not another, doesn't that mean more that the school's overall ranking?
It's analogous to a pro style QB going to a school like UM, rather than higher rated OSU or Oregon because it's a scheme fit. I don't understand the reliance on US News rankings.
November 18th, 2012 at 3:27 PM ^
"Rather than higher rated OSU or Oregon". Since when are those programs higher rated than UM? At best they're are a minor notch above because of the RR years, but recruiting rankings seem to indicate all three are at the same tier.
Michigan is universally acknowledged as better than OSU academically.
November 18th, 2012 at 4:45 PM ^
Well that flew right over your head, but I was referring to rankings, as in, who is having the better season. None of the subsequent points you made were being disputed
November 18th, 2012 at 7:05 PM ^
Most refer to these as rankings, not ratings. Also, you're discussing a point-in-time metric; university's reputations are pretty constant throughout time, with a few exceptions.
November 18th, 2012 at 1:12 PM ^
Kid looks pretty awkward and doesnt have the greatest body control, but he has great length and decent skill. Obviously has time to grow into his frame but his high ranking seems based on potential more than anything else. And I was thinking this before he chose OSU.
November 18th, 2012 at 1:19 PM ^
Just goes to show that we all need to take the reports these "recruiting insiders" put out with a grain of salt.
November 18th, 2012 at 1:41 PM ^
that UM recruiting fans are convinced is going to come here.
November 18th, 2012 at 1:58 PM ^
It sucks that we missed out on Bates-Diop, and even that he chose Ohio, but we still have the potential for a great class. This should our chances with Jae'Sean Tate, who Tremendous feels will be a 5-star, and we're in good position with Devin Booker to along with Hatch.
November 18th, 2012 at 2:01 PM ^
Never saw this coming.. He goes to school with my daughters. He has always favored Mich, Purdue, and Ill.
November 18th, 2012 at 2:21 PM ^
I know you said peaches not strawberries, but I'm now picturing Gordon Gee as Captain Queeg.
EDIT - Meant as a reply to RedGreene. Crap.
November 18th, 2012 at 2:24 PM ^
Not upset, actually give the kid some credit. He gets a call from yet another reporter and it happends to be in refrence to Michigan. He already knows he's going to Ohio State and drops a hint that hes going to go to Michigan, the reporter runs with it. The rival fan base gets excited and he gets his first jab in before even attending class. If a Michigan recruit pulled this we would all be laughing.
November 18th, 2012 at 3:22 PM ^
Whatever, I don't trust people with hyphenated names.
November 18th, 2012 at 3:44 PM ^
they just keep cheatin'. I wonder what they gave him to go to osu. They cheat at everything, it is systemic and hasn't stopped. They have nothing else in ohio, so it's win at all cost.
November 18th, 2012 at 5:40 PM ^
I will let you know what color is new vette is when look in the school parking lot tomorrow.....;)
November 18th, 2012 at 4:37 PM ^
Why does everyone place so much weight on what these "insiders" say? They're pretty much glorified weathermen. "Uh, today I think it might rain and he might commit, but I'm not sure, it depends on his timeline." I could've told you that.
I've been to a few camps and talked to some guys, trust me, these insiders are pretty obnoxious sometimes, almost harassing these guys. They propogate this virtual "trench" between recruits and fans, one that they are the ones who can fill in with their estimations and hypothetical nonsense. Why most people allow this to happen is beyond me. It's like being at a bar and wanting to talk to some girl, but some random guy tells you that you're not allowed to... but he can for a small price, even though he might not tell you anything of importance and might actually ruin everything.
November 18th, 2012 at 5:25 PM ^
Actually argued this over on the Scout board when I posted there over the years. Paying for speculation on amateur athletes is almost criminal on their end and sad on the fan end. They could just as easily not be so creepy and use an ad-based revenue system (imagine NSD) to make the info free if they want to get/give it. One of many reasons I stopped going over there after many years. One thing for a blogger to actually talk to a kid and report what was said for free but another to constantly call a kid's phone for 1-2 years to get constant "info" (kids couldnt be more vague after the 3rd month or so haha) and sell it. Always found it creepy in a way.
November 18th, 2012 at 7:04 PM ^
KBD hope you suck ass in Columbus bitch.
November 20th, 2012 at 8:38 AM ^
This one just cost you all the points until next year. Don't bad mouth 18-year-old kids again or you'll be banned from this site.
