OT: Jason Avant beaned in the head gifs

Submitted by MikeCohodes on

So I know we saw Ace's gif of Avant's insane one-handed catch in the run-up to the NW game last week on here, but today on SBNation they reminded us he is in fact mortal in this gif, where he slipped on his turn and wasn't ready for the ball when it came his way.

From the opposite angle:

Tough break for Avant.  Aside from this though I'm glad to see he's still mostly doing well in the NFL.  I'll always remember him for that NW grab.

PS - Sorry I don't know how to make the gifs stop and start on a click like Ace does.

If I was an NFL player I'd have iPads on the walls like picture frames showing GIFs. One wall of my trophy room would be all the good play, the other disastors like this. You have to be able to laugh at yourself.

Well, Avant was great - but maybe this was just a little bit of karma for him saying "Carver Miltary Academy" in the intros instead of U of M?  (Not sure if he has done this recently - did last year, though)

not a big deal, or even a little deal, but I love when NFL players say "Michigan" when they are introducing themselves, so of course it kind of sucks when they say their high school instead.  And it seems like there are a lot of Michigan players that say their high school and I don't understand why that number is so high with Michigan in particular.  And it was Braylon who said "Lloyd Carr's University of Michigan."  Yeah Braylon, nice grab against SC man.

And yeah, here's a Tiger Droppings thread about who they've seen announce non-college teams.

FWIW I think it's a pretty cool thing to do. M has 2-3 NFL guys at any given game (and anything the announcers say about previous teams will be about their college), while the recognition might help for a high school or a youth program or whatever.

4-5 guys a game might be generous, plus you have to take into account them being starters. This isn't 10 years ago when we were producing talent left and right. Alot of those guys were from the 97-2003 teams and most have retired since. I counted only about 13 guys that are starters that went to Michigan. Need those shoutouts when we can get them.

I checked it out and it looks like ~30 total at the moment. Still, I don't see the harm in giving a shoutout to a high school or pee-wee club a few times.

Edit: Even for those thirteen you counted, I don't think anyone is going to discover that Tom Brady went to Michigan because he says it in an intro. They're going to know it because it's brought up quite a lot without him saying anything, through the announcers, player profiles on ESPN.com, whatever.

There's only 27 in the NFL currently, and not all are starters.  Several teams have more than one alum though so when they play each other it comes up a lot (Seattle, Philly, Pittsburgh, San Diego, New England, Tennessee, NY Giants each have at least 2 Wolverines).

The AD's official website tracks who's currently active and reports on how they did each week.  Here's the most recent update, after week 9:  LINK

Avant came up limping out of that break and thus wasn't ready for the ball that hit him in the head. He then went back into the locker room and I dunno how hurt he was.

Also for the record, Brandon Graham got a LOT of run in this game. He played more than I'd seen him play in any game (not that I watch the Eagles often).

Jason Avant was probably the toughest receiver I've seen at Michigan.  A classic ball-control receiver who was fearless in catching the ball in any situation.  I saw him take some really nasty hits and get up like it was nothing.  I'm kind of hoping Darboh ends up being a faster clone of Avant.

that SBNation link was the one of the funniest things i've seen/read in a while.  Thank you for linking!!!

On Philip Rivers: "This is what happens when you make a decision to grow a mustache like that and you're not a fireman or Jeff Kent. Only bad things can happen to unironic young mustache-wearers in the year 2012, people."

And that Golden Tate TD celebration?
