Did the students rush the field?

Submitted by JimBobTressel on

Saw a picture on FB of a ton of people on the field, many dressed in fan gear. Had to be the students

Free Press article says the students interfered with Spartys band playing the post game and they weren't able to play a single note. Lolololol!

They finally gave up and hit the tunnel after standing out there in formation for awhile. By the time the "please clear the field for the MSU band" announcement came out they were pretty much gone.

Absolutely no problem with it. Combination of 4 years of frustration, 900th win, and a last second come from behind win - let the kids have some fun and rush the field.

Exactly. And I wish people wouldn't invoke Bo in their righteous indignation. Bo lost four games to Michigan State his entire career. We had just lost four in a row. If ending a four game losing stream against your bitter rival in thrilling fashion coupled with notching the 900th win in the history of your program isn't reason enough to rush the field, then I don't know what is.

Given that Notre Dame hasn't done much better than Sparty recently (current season notwithstanding), I expect a win over Notre Dame, too. We should have and would have beat them this year, if it wasn't for 6 turnovers. But there's no reason why I can't enjoy a win over a team I expect us to beat.

The players ran to the studentsection like usual and after they cleared out the students filed over.it was a great atmosphere and with that and win 900 perfectly appreciate. As for me, my 5 year old son insisted upon getting on and I am a good father so we did.

Every time Michigan hits a milestone like becoming the only team to win 900 games, you can rush the field if you beat umass for all I care. It's a big deal + a rivalry game win + streak snapped.

I'm not a student but I totally rushed the field. It's something I've never done and something I might not be able to do again. I've never been on the Big House carpet before so it was pretty unique. Win 900 helped. Pretty emotionally taxed after that one. Damn it feels good to be a gangsta.

Everyone cheered the players from their seats until they went into the tunnel. Then they flashed the 900 wins on the score board and everyone went nuts and rushed the field.

People who hate on students rushing the field/court/etc. have forgotten/never experienced what it's like to be in a student section watching your school win an exciting game.

I mean, yeah, this is a bit of an iffy game to do it, and the fact it took a day and a half for the students to actually do it didn't help things along, but I'll give it a pass.  Let 'em have fun.  That's what college is for.

And if Dantonio or Narduzzi get all hot and bothered even just a little bit, or RCMB melts down a little more as a result of a field rush, well, that's like a 5th quarter of win in my book.

The fact that the (MGO)fanbase is arguing over context, relevance, lil' brother, etc. means we shouldn't be rushing the field.  If this was a moment worth rusing the field we would all agree for the most part.  Context does matter but four years out of many decades isn't enough context for me.  My opinion is that if we're going to call them lil' brother, don't rush.  If we think we should beat them, don't rush.  If we are a better team, don't rush.

They showed a little video on the board mentioning win #100, #200, #300, and so on and then mentioned that this was win #900.

I don't think that was why students rushed.  I think it had more to do with the fact that we won a dramatic game on a last-second field goal.  And that's as good a reason as any.  People need to lighten up.

I'm with Bo on this.  No rushing the field for MSU.  I've been on that field after a game twice:  1997 OSU, 2011 OSU.  2012 Sparty does not make the cut.

when you haven't beaten your neighbors in four years...and they guy running their show twists the knife as much as possible with a dick grin on his face....and you have to face all the assinine office 'staee' fan shenanigans, usually at the most inappropriate times........and your neighbor is a total douche who doesn't wear state gear except when they win.

Yes by all means, rush the field, be happy.  It means something.

I got down to the field about six minutes after the initial rush. Got some pics/video ground level. High fived strangers, screamed my lungs out, and celebrated a last second win, michigans 900th win, a win over Sparty, and my 29th birthday in a mind blowing fashion. I drove ten hours, and it was my first time at the stadium; I'm ecstatic that the field was rushed.

Did Bo really say what people above are claiming, or is that some kind of MGoBlog urban legend?  I believe fans stormed the field after the 1979 Indiana game when AC caught the game-winning TD.  They used to do it fairly regularly back then.  Fans didn't take themselves that seriously in Bo's heyday.

I'll confirm that.  I was there.  It was very easy, you just jumped over a three foot wall and ran out.  There was no security that stopped you, so everyone did it a lot.

Eventually they started putting security around the goalposts becasuse of the expense of replacing them.  When the field was lowered, they kept people out, mostly to protect the delicate ill-fated natural turf.  When they went back to artificial grass, they still kept people out, mostly out of habit.

They only recently let it go for the big pent-up-demand wins against OSU and MSU. They will now return to their regularly scheduled police state at Michigan Stadium.  The kids who rushed the field may be the last ones to do it for decades.

They did.  And you know what?  Good for them, it'll be an awesome memory.  I never rushed the field as a student (1998-2002).  I think it would have been cool to have done once.

I went on the field and I would do it again. However, it didnt seem like the students rushed the field. they kind of just seemed to want to celebrate there. It was my first time back in 8 years, and to have the game end like that was special, in my opinion. The only other time I rushed the field was actually at Marshall in 2003 or so. I went with a coworker who had just graduated from Marshall. Roethlisberger was playing for Miami that year. Leftwich was out and the backup QB (Stan Hill) scored with four seconds left for the win. The game made headlines because a MU coach on the field, after the game, drilled some guy and his head bounced off the carpet. Then, other MU coaches threw their computers though the wall of the press box. It was a wild scene that night, but tonight was just fun and enjoyable. I don't see anything wrong with it.
