MGoShirt Alert - Day 13

Submitted by Six Zero on

"The guerrilla fighter needs full help from the people
of the area.  This is an indispensable condition."
         --Ernesto Che Guevara

This is the thirteenth entry of the 2009 MGoShirt Alert, a design project that will enable MgoBlog readers to vote for upcoming designs in the new MGoBlogStore.

Last night, pretty much by accident, I produced the single best t-shirt design of the entire series.  And of course, I immediately knew it was a foregone conclusion that this shirt could never see the light of day, for fear of legitimate legal action from the entire state of Ohio.  The kind of shirt that, in the case you were caught wearing it in Columbus, would find your corpse dragged through the streets.  By six-year olds.  Who would later be acquitted for their acts and instead hailed as patriots.  And given the keys to the city.  By Jim Tressel.

So instead, I'll give you this shirt, originally submitted during the Harmon shirt post  by our friend MCalibur:

Che Guevara and Rich Rodriguez have a lot in common.  Both came from humble beginnings.  Both became well-educated and powerful motivators of people.  Both had a son named Rhett and a super-blond wife named Rita.

Okay, maybe not the last bit, but there are certainly similarities.  Let's hope they stop there-- I doubt that Coach Rod wishes to be executed by the Bolivian government and strapped to the skids of a helicopter like a hunter's trophy.

Time to vote.  What do you guys think?

What do you think of MgoShirt #13?
Five Stars Four Stars Three Stars Two Stars One Star

***** Five Stars:  Coach Rod is the single best head coach we've ever had.
**** Four Stars:   Great guy-- but no one holds a candle to Bo.
*** Three Stars:  I'd put him just behind Fritz Crisler in the pecking order.
** Two Stars:  Bump Elliot deserves more praise than this Rodriguez guy.
* One Star:  Ack-- I'm registering a firecoachrod.com URL as we speak.

VOTING UPDATE:  We're proud to announce that we're moving up the final voting to Friday, so you'll be able to vote on the MGoShirt finalists over the entire weekend-- and the winning design will be officially rolled out on Monday.  With that being said, I originally said we'd do 15 shirts-- I still can, but I'd have to run another vote later in the day either today or tomorrow.  Is that cool with all of you, or should we just go with fourteen shirts and be done with it?  Talk to me MGoBlog...

Either way, tomorrow I'm going to be rolling out some very specific artwork that  I probably enjoyed creating more than any other design.  See you then for the final editions of MGoShirt Alert!

There's an entire industry built on stealing and misusing the creations of Bill Watterson without permission or legal grounds, and selling them for personal profit outside of NASCAR venues.

I will never create an image of Calvin peeing on anything.

I'm most offended by that crap, because it is not true to Calvin's character. Have the people making these even read Calvin and Hobbes?

The stealing is totally not cool, but I'm offended by the degradation of a beloved character more. It is like a sticker showing Mickey Mouse pimping Minnie.

On the one hand, I think it's one of the best yet. It's actually the first one that I've liked that's also funny, which is a major plus. I honestly laughed out loud.

On the other hand, that face is going to give me nightmares, I know it.

There is something about that face that is just... disturbing. Maybe it's the combination of the elongated chin with the squished nose making everything seem slightly out of place.

Personally, I don't like it too much since I find it hard to see RichRod in there. But maybe my eyesight just isn't very good.

no cigar. If you look at the original che image, his eyes are directed almost skyward--sort of into the future. that is what captivated all those hippies and psuedo revolutionaries back in the sixties. BTW--Che means 'pal'.

Che was a man of integrity and dedication. He once pulled out every hair in his head so as to disquise himself before traveling to Africa to assist some rebels there. He did not shave, he literally yanked out every single hair.

Anyway, I will give you points for the effort because it is nice to be reminded of Che once in a while, but I wouldn't buy this shirt. RR is a good guy and a deserving coach, but Che? Not even close.

I consider Che to be a hero, in a very different way than a football player can be a hero (unless they really get involved in social issues, as folks like Roberto Clemente did). I'm personally offended when I see kids who don't know anything about Che walking around with those shirts, and I think the taco bell ad campaign using his likeness was disgusting (moreso than the "food").

There's a great song by Against Me called Cliche Guevara...

Anywho, I think the more shirts you put up for voting, the merrier. Always enjoy seeing the designs, and I think you did a great job creating the image for this one, though I would never wear it.

That's interesting. I have almost exactly the opposite opinion of Che. Beyond the stereotypical annoyance of people using him as a fashion statement, I wouldn't wear this shirt (or newly trendy Lenin gear) because I think glorifying a standard-bearer for an extremely repressive and violent political system is morally reprehensible. Communism has more blood on its hands than any other contemporary political movement, yet for some reason there is no taboo (at least in the US and Europe) attached to displaying its emblems (as there is against swastikas, for example).

BTW, I'm not delegitimizing your opinion or trying to start a flamewar, if you like Che go ahead and wear such a shirt. I won't.

I'd like to see all 15, plus the one that will have me killed in Ohio. I've never been killed in Ohio before.

I'd like this shirt if it used a more determined RR face and less of a big smiley idiot expression. The smile just doesn't match the Che shirt. If there was a grim and serious Rich Rod face, I think the whole concept would work better. As it is, it is hard to even recognize that as Rod.

Geting killed there might actually be more fun than living there.

I've heard they make you do all kinds of weird things before they lop your head off at a Buckeye game.

You have to develop a love for Cheeze Whiz to the point that you consider it and hors d'ouvres, you have to wake up to drinking PBR (the official "coffee" of Ohio), and you have to consider a job at Cedar Point managing one of the roller coasters as some sort of career goal to work up to.

Some other forms of torture they've devised is that most of their dentists train in England, their "brain-drain" is to lose top students to West Virginia, and you may be forced to marry clowns.

I like the old image they had of Rodriguez--the one where RRod is giving the Thumbs-Up and they had it in some sort of thing which made it look cool.

Go with that one and I'm buying.

Sadly, I have not really been moved by any of the submissions prior to this one. I like this one a lot, but I cosign the thought that I would like to see what a different RR face would look like in there, this one seems a bit out of place.

Having said that, I do like this design better than all previous entries.

Also, I REALLY want to see the Ohio shirt. Please?

I would give it 3 stars if Che wasnt responsible for sending my familie's home into turmoil and leaving deep scars in the psyches of an entire people. Vote withheld.

This argument is purely semantics. Most revolutionaries are murderers. The one doesn't preclude the other. After all, the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time.

Anyhow, maybe RR will revolutionize our team so that we murder our opponents! Win - win!

@Sean: Dude, c'mon, are you really saying that murderers and revolutionaries are mutually exclusive? And you're being upvoted for it?

Also, I don't think anyone will mistake you for being sympathetic toward Che for wearing the shirt. It is, after all, just a funny shirt.
