Big Ten Recruiting Rankings: 9-30-12
Not a whole lot going in the recruiting world over the past couple weeks, but there is a new addition to the big board: the "POINTS" column, which is simply the product of number of commits times star average. Hopefully this adds a little more clarity to the rankings; as you can see below, Michigan and Notre Dame are well ahead of the field and Ohio State has some separation from the pack at large. Then there's Minnesota. Never change, Gophers. Changes since the last rankings:
9-11-12: Indiana picks up Jordan Heiderman.
9-19-12: Penn State picks up Kasey Gaines.
9-20-12: Ohio State picks up Tyquan Lewis.
9-22-12: Indiana picks up Anthony Young.
9-23-12: Notre Dame picks up Torii Hunter Jr.
9-25-12: Penn State picks up Tanner Hartman.

^The average of the average rankings of the four recruiting services (the previous four columns). The figure is calculated based on the raw numbers and then rounded, so the numbers above may not average out exactly.
NOTE: Unranked recruits are counted as two-star players.
To eliminate any confusion about how the rankings are determined (to be honest, they used to be arbitrary), team order is determined by multiplying the number of commits by star average.

Time to drop ND from these rankings.
September 30th, 2012 at 1:38 PM ^
Was just about to post the same. To hell with Notre Dame.
September 30th, 2012 at 3:44 PM ^
Not yet. We don't stop playing these guys for a few more years. And anyways they're one of the good barometers for how well we're recruiting the midwest.
But yea to hell with them.
October 1st, 2012 at 12:07 AM ^
They might be playing less games with us, but ND isn't going to stop recruiting the midwest and going after the same type of guys from California, Florida, Texas, whatever, that we are. I don't have the numbers for this, but I would venture a guess that we go head to head with ND for more recruits than about half the Big Ten. When is the last time we were in a heated battle for recruits with Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, IU or Northwestern? I can say it definitely happens with ND all the time.
October 1st, 2012 at 11:44 AM ^
Wisconsin gets a couple guys we're after just about every year.
October 1st, 2012 at 11:57 AM ^
How many guys would you say have some of the other Big Ten schools (maybe replace Wisconsin with Illinois?) in their top five or ten with M, compared to how many have ND and M? Some kind of guess would be just fine, I'm not looking for a scientific study or anything.
I'd assume we get into top five (or ten or eight, whatever) lists with Ohio State and Michigan State most often, and then ND after that. Like I said, though, I don't have any numbers to back that up.
October 1st, 2012 at 12:33 PM ^
In their top five, I would say that only a small chunk, maybe 10%, of guys Michigan recruits have Northwestern, Purdue, Minnesota, etc. in their top five. It's tough to put an exact number on, but Michigan always loses a couple guys to those schools each year (Ifeadi Odenigbo to Northwestern, Jonah Pirsig to Minnesota, Ricardo Allen to Purdue, etc.).
September 30th, 2012 at 1:54 PM ^
Northwestern's adding a kicker named Hunter Miswander? Probably not as tough as being named Hunter DeCrosse-Barr or Slippen Myzkikket or Wyatt Levdt.
September 30th, 2012 at 1:57 PM ^
First Penn State takes an unranked player whose best offer is Harvard...okay...but I do not approve of them taking an offensive lineman recruit from his next best offer at Temple.
September 30th, 2012 at 2:09 PM ^
immensely to see Ohio continue to bring in those high quality d linemen. Our future o-line will dominate, but it looks like they have the potential to eventually field a bad-ass two-deep d-line. I don't know if enough can be said about a strong front seven. We shall see I suppose....
September 30th, 2012 at 6:13 PM ^
Meyer knows that the easiest way to build a dominant team is to bring in the SEC model of defensive line play. I would honestly like to see Hoke do the same thing.
September 30th, 2012 at 7:20 PM ^
I'd be *very* surprised if Hoke doesn't have a strong intuitive grasp of the importance of D-line play. I'm sure he has the same goals as Meyer.
Toss Mattison in there, too -- he's a bright guy who saw that action up close in the SEC for a few years.
Why not mention Montgomery, too? I'm sure he, as well, understands what works.
Understanding is one thing ... getting the recruits is another. We'll see how that works out ...
September 30th, 2012 at 9:38 PM ^
I didn't intend to express concern over our future d-line. I agree that Hoke and company will create a monster d-line themselves. In fact, although we also have top-notch kids coming in, I beleive this staff could do as much with recruits that may not recieve many of the somewhat-overrated service endorsements (see 2005-06 Gator d-line of which Mattison was a part). That, however, says nothing with respect to what appears to be a nasty, growing collection of d-linemen in Ohio. Again, our incoming o-line is equally laudable, and will be equal to the task; but, to state the obvious a stable of fresh d-linemen with little to no drop-off in talent can really be a bitch to deal with.
September 30th, 2012 at 9:44 PM ^
Agree with all points ... I was aiming at the post beneath yours.
October 1st, 2012 at 12:05 AM ^
October 1st, 2012 at 9:26 AM ^
Mattison built those D-lines; I think Hoke's got this.
September 30th, 2012 at 2:45 PM ^
Will this be the last year we follow ND recruiting since they filed for divorce? Recruit competition is all that matters now.
Also, shouldn't Iowa be going after every RB recruit with a pulse?
Lastly, shouldn't Josh Banderas be ahead of Marcus McWilson since he's Nebraska's only consensus 4 star?
September 30th, 2012 at 3:33 PM ^
I secretly hope Norwestern becomes a top tier program, replacing either MSU or Iowa as the good but not great team that will compete with Michigan and Nebraska in the legends division. I doubt they will be able to have equal success compared to Nebraska due to overall football tradition, but for some reason I just have a softspot for the purple guys.
September 30th, 2012 at 10:40 PM ^
I think its cool that Pat Fitzgerald keeps an MGoBlog account.
He probably thinks that the old points system was better and that newer members should get the hell off his lawn.
September 30th, 2012 at 4:23 PM ^
that are being pursued by the both? Or is it a wash?
October 1st, 2012 at 9:28 AM ^
October 1st, 2012 at 10:05 AM ^
So then you understand NDs position then?
October 1st, 2012 at 11:47 AM ^
It's not the same situation. Notre Dame is already an independent. They can play whoever they want, and they frequently play USC, for example. Michigan has to play eight games within the Big Ten (aka the midwest), so adding a ninth regional school is "overkill" in some Michigan fans' opinions.
Meanwhile, even with Michigan holding down Notre Dame from playing national opponents, they're still playing USC, Oklahoma, BYU, Miami, Stanford, Boston College, and Wake Forest.

With aligning with the ACC that disappears quickly once they become a full member.

We compete with them for recruits more than we compete against half of the B1G (Iowa, Illinois, Minn, Indiana). They are still here because we won't ever stop recruiting the same players, even if they're in the ACC

Also, we play them every...single...year.

But only for two more years. After that, they're just another team in our region.
I agreed with having them on our list when they were an annual opponent, but I don't see a reason to have them on here any longer, since most of the recruits they're now getting will not play much of a role until after we stop playing them.
They were originally included on this list because they were a regular opponent, like an additional Big Ten team, not because we recruit against them, like many on here are mentioning. I don't see a reason for them to be included going forward. Maybe through the end of 2013 recruiting, but not beyond that.

I agree that they shouldn't be on here for much longer, but the 2013 kids are going to play against us in 2013 and 2014 (obviously not the ones who redshirt or are buried on the bench, but still).
I really just don't understand people being upset about it. It's free, extra information. If you don't like it, just pretend that Notre Dame isn't there and compare Michigan with the rest of the Big Ten schools. It's not that big of a deal.

"The margin is about as close as it gets between in-state rivals Indiana and Purdue for... 11th place."
Slighly off topic, but Good God...considering the talent level they're bringing in, I hope their defense isn't as good as their fan base thinks it is. Competing for 11th place? I hope we come out firing this week.

You mean the defense that gave up 41 points to Marshall? I think we'll be just fine. For the record, Purdue's 51 points in that game were against the #117 team in yardage allowed, so I'm not really that worried about their offense either.

And if its the Purdue team that allowed 41 pts to Marshall, then I'll agree. The Purdue I'm worried about is the one that lost to ND by 3 pts. I sure hope its the former.

Do we have a betting pool on the date Hackenberg and Breneman backtrack on their Penn State commitment yet?
