Let's go to Cedar Point.
Edit: I didn't think they posted them online. But rather you had to buy them in the park.
August 25th, 2009 at 1:15 PM ^
how many points do we need to be e-vited? Are the point requirements per ride? How many points would one need to ride the Maverick?
August 25th, 2009 at 2:34 PM ^
You'd need an MGoPoint bailout from Brian. Wait or is that the Witches wheel?
August 25th, 2009 at 8:50 AM ^
I'm pretty sure that if you don't order the pics within 8 minutes or so, they get deleted. Don't quote me on that. And I second an MGoCedarPointTrip.
August 25th, 2009 at 9:06 AM ^
An MGoCedarPoint trip might be a lot of fun, but there could be big problems too. An endless debate (before we even experienced the rides) about which coaster was faster, or had the possibility of giving us a better coaster experience. Then, if we did manage to decide on a ride, some negative commments from the usual suspects afterward (Magnus informing us that ride wasn't as much fun as we thought). Lastly, we'd have to put up with some whining from McFarlin when he failed to meet the minimum height requirement to ride the spinning tea cups.
August 25th, 2009 at 9:27 AM ^
posting.
Just like the football team with their new additions the new posters here at MGoBlog are really bringing the heat to the old posters.
Maybe that is why the old posters are cranky and bitching they thought that they had the starting spot secure but now with these new posters pushing for playing time they are pulling a Justin Boren.
(I will call you Shoelace)
August 25th, 2009 at 10:08 AM ^
The Dragster is track fast, but the Maverick is *football* fast.
August 25th, 2009 at 6:29 PM ^
and Denard is fast fast
August 25th, 2009 at 6:54 PM ^
Tate is just as fast. I didn't say he was just as fast, but he's about as fast.
August 25th, 2009 at 6:30 PM ^
The Mantis still needs to work on its pad level.
August 25th, 2009 at 2:19 PM ^
The Mean Streak is negged so much that Cedar Point eventually just deletes it.
August 25th, 2009 at 2:59 PM ^
I like the Mean Streak. Only coaster there you can ride faster than the Gemini.
August 25th, 2009 at 3:08 PM ^
There's a reason for that.
I just don't understand the coaster enthusiasts that LOVE the Mean Streak. "What a modern classic; it really beats you up!" No thanks.
High-fives to the opposing car are mandatory on the Gemini.
August 26th, 2009 at 10:25 AM ^
What Cedar point needs is a new, legitimate racing coaster. None of this staggered launch stuff. Set them both out at the same time every time, make the tracks identical distance, and put a screen up where the cars come in to show the photo finish winner each time.
August 25th, 2009 at 6:28 PM ^
Who's faster- Denard vs. the Dragster?
August 25th, 2009 at 3:27 PM ^
You have to buy them within 20 minutes.
August 25th, 2009 at 8:59 AM ^
I love MF and it's probably still my favorite ride but man Maverick really gave it a run for it's money. What a great ride!
August 25th, 2009 at 9:17 AM ^
I agree. Maverick is the best ride at Cedar Point...and that is saying a lot since Cedar Point has other great rides.
August 25th, 2009 at 3:09 PM ^
The Sarah Palin is as good as advertised. Great ride.
August 25th, 2009 at 9:20 AM ^
let us go to the point which is not Cedar.
August 25th, 2009 at 9:24 AM ^
+1 for you. Honestly these topics get sidetracked so fast
August 25th, 2009 at 9:27 AM ^
Do we want to take the turnpike, or Route 2 across? If we go on 2, there's a Perkins coming into town that's cleaner than most. And if it's a hot day, we can storm disaster transport for the A/C.
August 25th, 2009 at 9:28 AM ^
I was at CP earlier this summer and Disaster Transport was not the A/C haven that it once was. We were quite disappointed mostly because it was really hot out.
August 25th, 2009 at 9:38 AM ^
Well dang it! If it's not 150 below zero in there on a day where Lake Erie is boiling, then what's the point of that ride? Certainly not the coaster.
Note: That coaster was more fun back before they enclosed it. It was like... Bobsled run or something.
August 25th, 2009 at 9:59 AM ^
Avalanche Run. And it was pretty dull. They salvaged it by turning all the lights off and adding a hammy "story" to it.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:10 AM ^
Well, you gotta remember I was like... 9 when they changed it. I was upset actually. I found it (there wasn't much in that corner back then) and rode it one year, and I thought it was great. So the next year we went again, and I went looking for it, and it was GONE!
But you're right. It was, and is, a DULL coaster.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:30 AM ^
And it scared the shit out of me when I was 10.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:36 AM ^
Yeah the bobsled style track really limits the speed that is allowed. It probably sounded like a good idea when it was first proposed but it didn't work out that way.
August 25th, 2009 at 6:50 PM ^
despite the impossibility of it, I feel like my head is going to be removed from my body every time I ride the DT. I'm not even that tall (6'2). I just get the heebie jeebies everytime, nty.
August 26th, 2009 at 3:12 AM ^
DT was bad to begin with, but since they've pulled all of the movie/interactive crap out of it, it's just become impossibly boring.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:37 AM ^
I e-mailed CP a couple years back with the same question. They save the day's pictures (from all rides) for that day only, after which they purge. While you can't buy pictures after the day that you ride, you do have the option to wait (more than 8 minutes) before buying. This year, I noted my picture number and came back several hours later to buy.
Maverick rocks. New ride in 2010 -- rumored to be a log flume. CP fans can check out the forums at The Point Online or Screamscape to fulfill their appetites for rampant speculation.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:42 AM ^
Log flume -- is that what White Water Landing was? I'm surprised that they would add another one since they recently tore one down. I wonder where they would put it.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:01 AM ^
White water landing is still there, isn't it? Part of Thunder Canyon? I thought they took out Snake River Falls.
August 26th, 2009 at 3:13 AM ^
No, they tore down White Water Landing to put in the Maverick. Snake River Falls is still there.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:51 AM ^
Yes -- the old Mill Race (demolished to make way for the Raptor) and WWL (demolished to make way for the Maverick) were both log flumes.
There are generally two rationales, that I've heard, for bringing a log flume back. First, CP is (apparently) gaining a reputation for being too "extreme." Personally, I love it, and it's simply the park's prevailing reputation. However, there seems to be a movement toward being more family-friendly. This apparently means not breaking world records with every new ride.
Second, CP really only has two water rides left -- Thunder Canyon and Snake River Falls. Both get you absolutely drenched. I abhor TC, myself; haven't ridden since, what, junior high (1987)? SRF gets you soaked and is a short, boring ride. Log flumes are apparently meant to offer more sustained enjoyment, views, a nice drop, and some light soaking.
This rumor was somewhat confirmed by our standing in line at the Mav with two off-duty ride operators. They couldn't speak with certainty (or authority!), but they were told that the next ride is something that CP "needs." Many fans think that a log flume fits that description.
There are, of course, other theories about what the new ride might be. If interested, I encourage you to check out the Point Online forums. But not before scouring the scintillating content at this here site.
August 25th, 2009 at 1:19 PM ^
I bet that another factor is the massive investment required for these massive 90 mpg giga coasters, which is hard to justify in today's economy.
Now that they have soak city, I don't see why they need to build a water ride. What Cedar Point could really use is a great wooden coaster. Mean Streak is kinda eh and Blue Streak is outdated.
August 25th, 2009 at 1:53 PM ^
Although 1) there hasn't been a new "major" ride attraction since 2007, and 2) Soak City involves an additional admission fee. Being a hardcore rider, I've never had any intention of leaving the park until I get my fill. But if I get hot, I might like to cool off on a water ride without needing to wring out my shorts. God forbid I should wear my blue and white Coca-Cola shorts like I did in 9th grade. Wet tee shirt? No. Wet pubescent package. Awkward!
For kicks, I did some light research on Mean Streak (which my friends and I hate) after our May trip. You may find it interesting:
"Ironically, MS is not the only ride by the former Dinn Corp. to have a poor reputation with riders. Of the 12 woodies built, three have been closed/dismantled due to rough ride, low ridership, and high maintenance. MS would seem to be next in line!"
August 26th, 2009 at 2:09 PM ^
I'm curious if you've ever ridden Son Of Beast at King's Island (another Cedar Fair joint).
Several people have died from that ride (though I believe all have been linked to a preexisting condition) and now the ride is more than likely permanently closed after another incident involving a serious injury.
August 26th, 2009 at 8:50 AM ^
I went to a couple of those sites and the speculation on the boards is amusingly similar to what you find here. If you replace "coaster/log flume" with "Forcier/Robinson" you would have the exact same debate.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:03 AM ^
thanks guys. I called them up and they are looking for my pictures right now. Btw Maverick was my favorite ride
August 25th, 2009 at 12:20 PM ^
Make sure that in the picture, you're the main person/people pictured. When I went, my friend and I bought a picture but the couple sitting in front of us was the main focus, and we were behind them like an afterthought and the picture was sort of disappointing.
Love CP though!
August 25th, 2009 at 1:50 PM ^
haha well no thats the point the picture is not about me. behind me there was this gorgeous brunette that i started talking to in line. but i was stupid and didnt grab her number so if i can have that picture i can find her on facebook. i mean it would help
August 25th, 2009 at 3:14 PM ^
Are you serious? That's a totally different level of FB Stalking than what I've heard of - hopefully if you find her she's not totally weirded out by the lengths you went to find her.
August 25th, 2009 at 3:16 PM ^
haha no thats the thing i had no intention of ever seeing this girl again but as soon as we left as we were leaving she blew me a kiss then i was gonna go get her number and her mom showed up
August 25th, 2009 at 3:52 PM ^
Well I guess that might be alright - if she wigs out that you FB stalked her to find her then eh well, her loss.
August 25th, 2009 at 4:42 PM ^
haha the world is full of good looking women. No loss there not for me at least
August 25th, 2009 at 2:00 PM ^
Best Cedar Point picture moment ever:
My friend and his brother were going with some friends to Cedar Point this year. My friend's brother was mainly going to try to get with this one girl that was going, but I unknowingly upset the ride/partner number chemistry when my friend invited me to go. His brother ended up going on all the rides by himself, and the pictures were hilarious -- every ride's picture capture showed him sitting alone looking completely bored and dejected. We bought one and made it a keychain.
August 25th, 2009 at 7:09 PM ^
When the Top Thrill Dragster first opened up, my brother, myself and a few friends went down. Coming out of the corner the wind caught my cheek (mouth was open, obvs) and a big, thick string of saliva flew out on my brother and co. behind me. When we checked the pictures it had actually captured that instant, spit still clinging to my lip, and my buddy next to me looking over w/ a disgusted look on his face.
I'm still sad we didn't buy that picture, but we all still laugh about it.
August 26th, 2009 at 2:05 PM ^
Millennium is still my favorite coaster by far. It's nonstop fast. Plus that first drop is a gutbuster.
Maverick gave me a wicked bruise on my shoulder from the harness and the super crazy turns. It was totally worth it.
Top Thrill is an amazing rush but it's not worth the wait for 20 seconds of ride time.
Raptor is still awesome after 13 years (14?).
Mean Streak is just brutal, like getting your ass kicked for 3 minutes.
Magnum is another coaster that is still awesome after all this time (20 years). The back portion of the ride is a little unsettling, especially at nite when there are no lights and the track is wobbling around a bunch as you race over the hard banked turns.
Mantis should require a cup.
Wicked Twister is a very underrated ride, IME. I had never ridden it before this summer and damn, that ride is awesome, especially in the front.
Gemini is a classic coaster. High-fiving during the ride is required.
August 26th, 2009 at 2:17 PM ^
I agree about Magnum. It is a wonderfully designed coaster. That's what's great about all of Cedar Point's coasters. They aren't just big and fast. They are intersting and unique too. Except the Mean Streak. That one is just boring despite its huge height. But the Raptor is easily the best inverted coaster I have ever ridden and the Millenium Force is just awesome. The Gemini is still fun too.
I agree about Top Thrill. To me it's the Demon Drop of the 21st century. Long ass wait, short ride. Wicked Twister has a huge wait/length ratio too. I'm not a fan of that one either.
