MGoShirt Alert - Day 12

Submitted by Six Zero on

"The Michigan swagger is back, and Charles is the one who restored it. The
feeling is like, 'We're better than you, and you aren't going to beat us.'"
   --1997 Co-Captain Jon Jansen

This is the twelfth entry of the 2009 MGoShirt Alert, a design project that will enable MgoBlog readers to vote for upcoming designs in the new MGoBlogStore.

A week ago, I rolled out "The Desmond" design to then-record positive reviews, and although there were some random suggestions to tweak the shirt in minor ways, it remains a strong contender for the final vote into the MGoStore.  In the same spirit of that shirt, then, I am proud to reveal "The Woodson:"

Beyond the Heisman, his resume includes:  Walter Camp Player of the Year.  2x Chevrolet Defensive Player of the Year.  2x Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.  Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Year.  Jim Thorpe Award.  Two-time All-American (Unanimous Selection in 1997. Fourth overall pick of the 1998 NFL Draft.  And, of course Team MVP of the National Championship season.

1997 was the most magical season I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing, and a significant part of that must be credited to #2.  There was no telling what Woodson was going to do on any given week, but by God you always knew he was going to do something... and in the end it was enough to keep the Heisman out of the greedy fingers of one then Volunteer-wonder boy Peyton Manning.

Time to vote.  What do you guys think?

What do you think of MgoShirt #12?
Five Stars Four Stars Three Stars Two Stars One Star

***** Five Stars:  The highlight of Charles' college career was clearly the becoming the first primary defensive player to win Heisman.
**** Four Stars:   Single best moment has to be winning the National Championship at the Rose Bowl vs. Washington.
*** Three Stars:  Nope-- defeating OSU at home with a TD catch, a punt return for TD, and a pick in the endzone.
** Two Stars:  The legendary interception on the sidelines in East Lansing takes the cake for me.
* One Star:  Charles leaving a year early to put on a (gulp) Raiders jersey as the fourth overall NFL draft pick.

(It was very hard for me to list any of Charles' collegiate accomplishments as anything less than five-star, except for the Raiders thing of course.  Like a trip to Atlantic City, I twinge whenever one of our boys gets picked up by Al Davis-- nothing good can ever come of it.)

Only three more shirts left-- I think tomorrow we're going to go with a reader suggestion from back in Week One. Until then, see you next time for another exciting edition of-- MGoShirt Alert!

First one I have given five stars to, though the shadow could probably use a slight amount of refinement.

(Also, Washington State in the Rose Bowl :) )

This is a clever design and I like the concept, but there is just too much negative space to the left. It needs some kind of balance--meaning shifting it to the left or throwing a "Those who stay will be champions" at all that open real estate on the West side...

I love this one. If I could give any suggestion, just shrink the image a bit and center it -- for those of us who wear a Large+, keeping images off the midriff (where they can be, um, distorted) is key to any clothing.

make a little suggestion. To me it just seems like there needs to be some kind of wording/saying on the shirt. I was thinking something about the shadow. But I really liked this design.

Bravo! Best one so far. The simplicity makes it great, one of those less is more things.

Its also just like the shirts that Maize Rage printed up this past year, that read "BELIEVE" and the shadow read "BEILEIN."

But I would lose the shadow. For my taste, almost all of these designs have too much or are too literal, so they lose the core of what is a good idea. I would buy one or more of these shirts if they simply had the silhouette of a famous M player, like Desmond (without the phrase), Woodson just the pose, etc. That would be simple, classic iconography that you can't get anywhere, and look cool,

It took me a while to figure out that his shadow is a silhouette of the Heisman; I originally thought you were projecting the ninja meme onto Woodson. The image is pretty splotchy; I would agree with anyone who calls for an image of the Rose Bowl skyward point. I think you could put the Heisman shadow beneath that if you wanted; shadow or not, though, an indiscernible blob with a jersey #2 on it does not a Charles Woodson make. I use a lot of semicolons.

I knew there was something I was missing with what the shadow was supposed to be. I was thinking it was supposed to be Woodson getting ready to intercept some pass but I couldn't get myself to see it.

Now I can see the Heisman but man that was hard (when it has to be pointed out to you, something isn't right).

If you made Woodson bigger* then you could make the shadow bigger and it might be easier to see the Hesiman in that. I think a key part to see it would be putting some "light" through the crooked arm so that you can actually see that there's an arm there. Right now it just looks like a large blob but with some light between the arm and the body, it could be much more defined.

*Some people have said that there's too much empty space on the shirt, making Woodson and therefore the shadow bigger could solve that problem too.

and as close to perfect as you can get without liscencing issues. I wasnt a fan when Woodson happened which is kind of a bummer. I call those times "the age of ignorance".

Instead of Woodson in his preplay stance, why not a picture of that sick interception vs MSU, with the Heisman shadow below him? That is still by far the most insanely athleatic play I've ever seen, and I feel it deserves some recognition.

Other than that, I'd give it a 4* (only because I'd rather have the INT picture) Good job

To make this shirt unmistakably Woodson, I'd change this to be a graphic of his spectacular one-handed INT on the sideline vs. MSU. That play still makes me gasp every time I see it.

Michigan is known for it's simplicity. We don't have mascots or music piped into the stadium. People see the Block M and immediately think of Michigan. For these reasons, I think the simplicity of the shirt is what makes it so special.

Center the image as “Misopogon” suggested, but keep the shadow, if everyone knew that is was the Heisman pose than I could see the argument of being too literal of a design. 5 stars stick with the KISS theory…..and don’t add text; it’ll take the focus away from the simplicity of the shirt. Nice work!

Would this image be better on the back of the shirt?

Also, the list of accomplishments would be pretty cool to put on there too.

Edit: Can we get a Tom Harmon one, too?

Doesn't really need one, but if you were thinking of adding text to the front or back:

  • DID YOU KNOW:
75 percent of the Earth is covered by water. The other 25...

I love it! I say keep it strictly graphic, no text, and I like it off-center.

The only thing I might experiment with is the Heisman shadow. Have you played around with it reversed, so the stiff arm switches places with the ball/bent arm? The legs would also be switched. I don't know how it would look as a shadow under Woodson, but I wonder if that angle will make the Heisman shadow a little clearer. Play around and see.

Good shirt.

but I have thought that not one of these has been very good. They're great ideas but the designs aren't the greatest. The best one was the Desmond Howard Heisman pose. I don't think I will be buying one but I do give u props for taking the time to do this. You don't get paid and that was a lot of work so kudos.

I think this shirt is great! I agree with everyone sying to keep it simple but I also like the idea of puttin the quote some where, maybe on the back? but this is still a great shirt when would we be able to get these shirts?

For me, the lasting image of Charles Woodson will always be after we beat Ohio St--with Charles clutching a rose inbetween his teeth, grinning, and nodding up and down. "I make plays, baby"
