That may be a morale killer. A true freshman in his third game is honored with a legends number? I love the kid and fully expect him to be an amazing asset, but game three is just too early. Of course, you may have been kidding. At any rate, I have an appointment to get my sarcasm meter checked this afternoon.

Not kidding. Ron Kramer once said himself that he would like to see his number worn someday by a young stud, tight end. Which that was the definition of Kramer back in the day.

Lets face it, the coaching staff (which obviously sees far more than we do) has clearly seen something that makes them believe that many of our freshmen are better than the upperclassmen. How many of you guys expect to see Bolden be named starter soon and it wouldn't shock me if by the end of the season Pipkins and Ross are too with Funchess and  Ojemudia, playing significant snaps if not starting too.

The thing I'm looking for is some of those true freshmen linemen getting thrown in there soon. I'm admittedly spooked by the fact that we lose the entire interior OL at the end of the season and they need to get Kalis some snaps to prepare for that since basically the only guys on the depth chart left a Miller, Burzynski and Kalis to fill those three spots.

If you are giving it to a tight end , what other tight end would you give it to? Funches more than likely has now done more than any other tight end on our roster in their career. If the coaches see something special in the kid and he is working hard why not honor that. Would you rather they gave it to a juniour or senior who sat the bench 99% of their career?

Yes it's a great honor to see such a great wolverine..... on the bench

Gonna really miss Denard after this year.  Probably not even a .500 team without him this and last couple years.  Amazing the yards he puts up.

I was also really, really impressed with Funchess.  I did not think he would be productive for a few years, needed to gain some weight etc... but wow, i know it was air force, but he looked like a seven foot receiver out there.  He impressed me.

That all depends on who would replace him.  If Michigan had a starting QB job open, we might have pulled in a high level recruit in 2011 or 2012.  And with starter's reps, Gardner or Bellomy might be further along at QB than they are right now.  You never know with those sorts of things...

with unretiring numbers is going to be impossible for a student to create their own "legend" jerseys? After say someone like Denard's possible 16. If we keep giving the numbers to the kids that show the best potential we will likely not have many new "legends"

this might be thread hijacking, so i apologize ahead of time, but i didn't feel like creating my own thread. since we're on the topic of denard robinson and his general awesomeness, what does everyone feel that his chances are of breaking pat white's record this year? he's got 911 yards to go with at least 10 games left to play, 11 in all likelihood, and 12 if UM make the title game.

Don't know, too many questions.

  • Does he stay healthy?
  • Does Hoke pull him to rest him if we are obliterating a team, say, UMass or Minn?
  • How do Hoke & Borges feel on records? My general recollection is that they frown on teams who run up yardage and scores just to pad stats.

However, let's look at the schedule and evaluate solely in terms of rushing yardage. We can ignore passing yards and also win - loss probability for the sake of your question.

I think it is quite reasonable for Denard to gain 150 yards in the following games, and more if he plays through the whole game:

  1. Massachusetts
  2. Purdue
  3. Illinois
  4. Minnesota

I think that Denard could reasonably gain 100 in the following games:

  1. ND
  2. Northwestern
  3. Nebraska
  4. Iowa

And I could see Denard gaining 50 yards in the following:

  1. MSU
  2. Ohio

That would be 900 yards, a reasonable expectation. And that's only the regular season.

Short answer: yes, if Denard stays healthy, he'll eclipse the Pat White record.

Oh, and FTR, this is indeed threadjacking that borders on snowflaking. You have enough points. Think of this as your assignment:  next time, make your own post and state reasons with statistical backup why or why not you think Denard will set the record.

You could find out definitively whether or not the Big 10 Championship game (and an assumed bowl game) would count toward the record or not. You could look at what Denard has gained historically against the above teams. You could calculate out how much game time Denard has been out due to injury. Of course, that would require some actual research on your part. I think you're up to it.

This will sound snarky but it's a completely honest question and not intended to be that way. What exactly did you see in the Ohio defense that would make you think they can hold Denard to 50 yards rushing. They don't appear to be any better than they where last year and Denard shreded them last year.

I LOVE YOU BUNCHESS FUNCHESS.

Speaking of slogans, did you guys see Denard's girlfriend's t-shirt?  Something like "My boyfriend can run faster than yours."  Made it on the big screen a couple of times because she's got good seats.

That is likely a fair statement. I don't know if it was mentioned formally on the boards, but it was Brian or Ace, I believe, who tweeted during the game that one of the writers near them came up with "The Funchise". I liked that one in particular.

To the point of the article posted, congratulations to both Funchess and Robinson - stellar performances by both on Saturday, and an awesome introductory one for Devin Funchess.
