I can't wait for the day that no Sparty material will be on this board. This place looks like RCMB sometimes. They will go away if we ignore them. I promise.

that say "Wal Mart Wolverine" or "Walverine" aren't going to care even if State becomes the most popular team in the country with 99% of its fans in the "unaffiliated" category. My guess: nothing changes with those people.

This is now allowed, you need to be an MSU student or alumnus to root for MSU, this is a fact, many MSU fans have told me so.  I can't see this story even being possible, let alone true.

Correct.  Remember, too, that we're the arrogant ones, despite them having a policy that the only people entitled to cheer for a college football team are those who went to college (and to that particular school).

The back-and-forth with our rivals would be much smarter, wittier, and more fun if we somehow had ended up with schools like Cal or Texas as our big rivals.  Stupid geography and Toledo War.

I see this argument all the time. I don't understand how typing four letters means you care. Can he not let you guys know he doesn't care about an issue without actually caring about said issue? Maybe he cares about letting everyone know he doesn't care....but....doesn't care............................wtf am I talking about? I don't give a fuck anymore.

to Central. Trust me when I say that I knew plenty of people there who were rabid Michigan State fans. I guess we can just change it's name from Wal-Mart to Spart-Mart.

I found this comment from the article to be a little idiotic: “State will win because they are a Big Ten team and we are a MAC team, so their program is better,” said Traverse City junior Andrew Zelinski. "

Yep, that's exactly what I thought when I went to Central my senior year. Oh wait...

The insult started for good reason, really.  It originally only referred to the UM fans who weren't students or alumni who would bring up academics when comparing the schools, intended to be reserved specifically for those who likely wouldn't have gotten in to either school.  I don't disagree with it, because I've heard kids from Western and Central talk about how Michigan is such a better school than MSU and thought it was a dumb convo for those kids to be having.

That moniker, however, has evolved to refer to all UM fans who aren't students or alumni.  This is dumb, because every fanbase, including MSU, has fans who never attended the school.

Yeah, I mean, it's hard to tell really.  I think it would apply to you anyway, just as it would for a UM fan who went to Yale, even.  It's hard to say "Michigan is a great school academically and MSU sucks" when you didn't go to Michigan in the first place, even if you could have.

But maybe I'm wrong, and this is clearly gray area.  The intent was for people who couldn't go to MSU to rip on their academics, regardless of what school they ended up at.

Telling an MSU fan that M is superior academically is simply stating a fact, and people who speak the truth should never be demeaned for doing so.  This statement didn't become "more true" since finishing my undergrad at CMU and attending grad school at M, it just remains fact. BTW, MSU has a boatload of non-affilliated fans, so if this Walverine thing isn't dead from sheer juvenility, it should die because the argument doesn't make any sense.

Although I agree with you, stating a fact is different that ripping on someone for something.  It's like me calling you a fatass when I weigh 30 pounds more than you.  It might be true that you're a fatass, but it makes me look like an idiot (and an asshole) when I'm more of one than you are.  Just like someone who couldn't get in to MSU telling an MSU student that they're dumb because they wish they could have gotten in to Michigan.

As for it dying - it's typically only the stupidest of the Sparty fans who use it, so thinking it will die simply because it doesn't make sense it probably not going to happen.

thank you...it's any wonder folks look at some UM fans as egotistical pricks...get the fuck over it already...who cares what people post about what university. Last I checked MSU cleaned our asses the last four years in a row...perhaps it's time to start taking their program seriously? I'd like to beat them as much as the next guy, but they are rivals, always have been, always will be. We enjoyed a long run of dominance, and they have had their fun the last few years. Again, thanks for posting something I found interesting.

During the 60's our football program was pretty pathetic compared to its earlier dominance. Once Bo got things going Michigan treated the MSU game as just one more on the way to "the Game".  MSU may have viewed us as their rival, but since the Bo era have we really worried much about MSU? Sure they've beaten us 4 straight and can rightfully be proud of that achievement. We have beaten them for far longer streaks, including 6 straight before they started this one.

Would I like to beat MSU? You bet, I want to win every game. Am I worried about MSU's 4 game streak? Nope. Win or lose this year, the process for Michigan regaining dominance is in place and rolling along. I've been following Michigan football since the 60's. That gives me perspective on a 4 game streak that while annoying is small in the history of Michigan football.

This is exactly why I haven't taken it down yet.  Also, I'm still waiting to understand why CMU rooting for MSU is going to end the "Wal-Mart Wolverine" moniker . . .

Also, what if you are a very senior executive at Wal-Mart and root for Michigan without having a Michigan degree?  Is "Wal-Mart Wolverine" really a derogatory term in that instance, given the fact that Wal-Mart is from time to time the largest corporation in the world?

(What a dumb but intriguing discussion)

I go to Central and this might be the most retarted article i have ever read. Of course there will be a couple of my classmates that wear green but most of us will be sporting the Maroon and gold. This whole wal mart team needs to stop!

I don't understand the implication of Walmart wolverines. Isnt it a good thing that people who aren't even affiliated with the university can still be die hard fans? Seems better than being a school where nobody besides students or alumni care...

.....it's effective.  It doesn't bother most Michigan fans but it does bother some.  That's a victory for them, especially if Michigan fans start discussing it amongst themselves (or if they create blog topics about it).

The meme will never die in their circles but see it for what it is..... a juvenile attempt to get under your skin..... ignore it and move it on.
