Preview for Gameday. Quick question.

I wanted to ask how they make previews for the kickoff games of the season in week 1. They dont have any stats from this year obviously so do they use statistics from last year for the preview? To me that doesn't make a whole lot of sense but then what else would they go by? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but I dont know why even on paper they would need a preview for an opening game with new teams. It seems unnecessary to me.

When stats from the previous season are used in conjunction with analysis of which starters from last year return/left, it can sometimes be meaningful. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to say with as much confidence as we can that Alabama will be a much better team than Akron.

Fair enough. How about it's how we can say that Purdue will likely be better this year because they return a bunch of starters, or how we can say that MSU may struggle on offense this year but should remain strong on defense? Yes they can be way off the mark, but their predictive power goes beyond just entertainment.

For those who don't follow blogs like mgoblog, many use the previews to learn about potential new contributors to the team for the season. Whether it is a new qb, incoming freshmen or a new coaching staff, the show can at least provide a small amount if input on what or who to look for in the upcoming season. It also may highlight a player that came on big as the season progressed and will be primed for a breakout year. It also gives fans of opposing teams some details on who could be a problem in their match up.
