Big Ten Recruiting Rankings: 8-26-12
The Big Ten Recruiting Rankings returns after a two-week hiatus. Outside of Penn State's class continuing to fall apart, little of note occurred since the rankings were last posted; look no further than Indiana picking up the highest-ranked recruit in that span for evidence. Changes since the last rankings:
8-5-12: Minnesota picks up Jalen Myrick.
8-6-12: Wisconsin picks up Alex James.
8-7-12: Illinois picks up Reggie Spearman. Dorian Johnson and Zach Bradshaw decommit from Penn State.
8-8-12: Nebraska picks up Zach Hannon. Indiana picks up Myles Graham.
8-9-12: Nebraska picks up Jonathan Cook. Indiana picks up Antonio Allen.
8-10-12: Illinois picks up Martize Barr. Northwestern picks up Godwin Igwebuike.

Northwestern; I had told Ace to watch out for Godwin a year ago. He had another blowout game in the opener Friday night (wasn't there, but think he had some of the top rushing stats for central Ohio - 4 TDs, 260 yards rushing, plus 40 yards receiving in the 50-22 win). Before the game, nice article and picture of Jake and Godwin here.
In related Picktown recruit news, the local "This Week" paper had a big article in their season preview insert on "Michigan Taking a Bite of Central Ohio Talent" and featured Taco (and teammate) on the cover:

Yeah, you gotta figure at least one of the 4 (!) safeties in the recruiting class is destined for RB. And maybe the ATH, and one of the LBs or TE. Heck, half of the class will probably be needed to carry the ball at some point in the next 5 years.

For the record, I preferred the old arbitrary rankings to the new mathematical ones. Soemtimes the eye test can make a small class better than a larger one.

To eliminate any confusion about how the rankings are determined (to be honest, they used to be arbitrary), team order is determined by multiplying the number of commits by star average.
That is, it's just the total number of stars. Are two three-stars better than one five-star? Perhaps, but it doesn't feel right quite right.

Just off the top of my head, you can use Matt Hinton's findings.
Using those weightings (which are based on making All American teams - a flawed, but decent metric), you get that a 5 star recruit is about 2.6 times more likely to be a star than a 4 star recruit, who is in turn around 4.2 times more likely to be a star than a 3 star recruit.
Now star power isn't the only thing that matters, but I don't see any reason to think the distribution for "role player" or "starter" is all that different.

Wouldn't it be nice if someone found all the data you needed to rank the teams any way you want, then compiled it all in one place? Yeah, it sure would.
Just sayin', you guys. No matter what way I do it there are always going to be complaints, and the exact order of the teams doesn't matter nearly as much as getting a snapshot of their respective classes. Also, I'm certainly not stopping anyone from taking the data and doing whatever they want with it; in fact, I'd encourage it.

Take it easy. Cooper was rated higher than both Dawson and LTT (actually ranked highest o-lineman or d-lineman) at SMSB by Helmholdt...the kid is legit. MSU also picked up Dennis Finley tonight.
