Deveon Smith highlights from opener vs Lakeside
Deveon Smith with 17 carries for 311 yards and 3 TDs. Highlights include a sack on defense as well:
Bonus:
Highlights from Marlington (Dymonte Thomas #1) win over Poland. Not much of Dymonte except at end with tackle and FF where he blew up the RB:

Interview with Gareon Conley after win over Buchtel:
August 24th, 2012 at 8:35 AM ^
He reminds me of Leroy Hoard
August 24th, 2012 at 8:40 AM ^
Wow, hopefully Deveon can keep up his clip of 18 yards per carry for the next few years.
August 24th, 2012 at 10:12 AM ^
If he only averages 17 yards per carry in college I will be pissed.
August 24th, 2012 at 8:43 AM ^
too funny, the D-Rich intro is longer than then interview... GC seems pretty much as cool as the underside of the pillow. Good disposition to have as a CB on the big stage.
Smith is just a tank... a relatively fast one at that.
August 24th, 2012 at 9:17 AM ^
The intro was ridiculous. I also loved the D-Rich TV t-shirt he wore during the interview. Hopefully, this guy is a fixture at all of Conley's games this year. Maybe Brian can put him on the staff to cover recruiting.

I thought at first that someone played a joke on us and it was a rap video looking for clicks.
Agree, he needs to be a staple.
August 24th, 2012 at 10:01 AM ^
He had an exclusive interview with Jarrod Wilson from Akron Buchtel after he committed to Michigan:

I love the plastic covered couch. Someone call Dave Chapelle!

I hope he (Deveon) keeps his number in college because I have always been fond of seeing the #4 in the backfield!
For those more in the know, on a couple of those runs he reminded me of a Brandon Minor too. Is that just me or does he remind anyone else of Minor? Decent power with some speed...
August 24th, 2012 at 9:46 AM ^
I'm sure the #4 has something to do with it, but their size and upright running style are similar enough. Looking back at his high school tape, Minor might have had more top-end speed coming in (or he might have just played against inferior competition). Either way, I hope Hoke teaches Smith how to RAGE.
August 24th, 2012 at 8:52 AM ^
311 yard is good right? I mean for one game?
August 24th, 2012 at 8:52 AM ^
Rivals whiffed on DeVeon...
August 24th, 2012 at 9:07 AM ^
Not if your name is Tshimanga.
EDIT: Meant for the post above the above post...
August 24th, 2012 at 9:13 AM ^
Of course, being #2 on that list is nothing to sneeze at.
August 24th, 2012 at 9:08 AM ^
To put it in perspective, the top rusher from the collective pool of Illinois, Purdue, and Northwestern last year was Purdue's Ralph Bolden. He managed to get 674 yards on the season.
August 24th, 2012 at 9:16 AM ^
High score, whats that mean?? Did i break it??
August 24th, 2012 at 10:04 AM ^
I am working on getting robot legs.
August 24th, 2012 at 10:25 AM ^
Risky operation but it's worth it
August 24th, 2012 at 8:57 AM ^
What level of competition is Deveon playing against?
August 24th, 2012 at 9:09 AM ^
He plays for Howland, which is considered division II in Ohio. The competiton is not bad. Its not the best, but there are some good teams. My dad is very good friends with Howlands head coach, and he told my dad a while back how good of a running back he had. I had no idea that guy he was talking about would be a future wolverine. Also, I live close to Howland. If they have anymore thursday night games, ill check it out.
August 24th, 2012 at 9:24 AM ^
Normally he will play some pretty good teams. Last night the team he played is terrible though. They won 1 game last season, and 0 the year before. So just a little perspective.
Still, racking up 300 yards against the bad teams is exactly what a great back is supposed to do so glad to see him showing that he's a man amongst boys out there.
August 24th, 2012 at 9:22 AM ^
I can't speak to the competitive level of Howland's conference schedule though.
August 24th, 2012 at 9:26 AM ^
I've read his competition isn't very good, but at the same time I've also read that he is literally his whole team's offense (and also plays D) and everyone knows every other play is "give Deveon the ball". And he still destroys people.
August 24th, 2012 at 9:00 AM ^
Smith looked pretty good in those highlights. He has a bit of shifty-ness to him and has decent field vision, IMO. That hit that Thomas laid on the ball carrier was brutal. Can't wait to see him do that at Michigan.
August 24th, 2012 at 9:00 AM ^
Who knew Poland had an American football team?
August 24th, 2012 at 9:26 AM ^
Well yeah, they're part of the grand coalition. Or did you forget?
August 24th, 2012 at 9:03 AM ^
I can't judge speed at all from that camera angle.
August 24th, 2012 at 9:04 AM ^
Easy to see why Ohio offered this guy
August 24th, 2012 at 9:33 AM ^
Beast mode. Impressive highlights.
August 24th, 2012 at 9:52 AM ^
Howland's schedule is decent, but nothing to write home about. He wont be playing against many other teams with D1 prospects. If you're comparing that to school like Massilon Washington or St Ignatius, the schedule is weak.
August 24th, 2012 at 10:23 AM ^
So was mike hart's
August 24th, 2012 at 9:57 AM ^
Everyone needs to temper their expectations a bit. Remember players like Kevin Grady who was a huge dominant RB in high school and couldn't make it work in the college game.
August 24th, 2012 at 10:00 AM ^
Was the slowest RB ever and made a living out of trampling lesser talented kids. Thats not the case with Smith.
August 24th, 2012 at 12:22 PM ^
Kevin Grady was not slow at all, and would probably smoke Deveon Smith in a foot race. Grady's problems were 1) fumbling, 2) blowing out his knee, and 3) drinking to the point of passing out behind the wheel of an automobile.
Grady's drawbacks were nothing physical, which is why he was such an OMG five star recruit.
August 24th, 2012 at 1:16 PM ^
Time was, the kid was at best an undersized fullback the moment he stepped on campus. Yes he fumbled and had a drinking problem but had he displayed even average speed he would have seen more carries.
August 24th, 2012 at 10:01 AM ^
Thanks buzz kill.
August 24th, 2012 at 10:50 AM ^
Counterpoint: everyone get super excited! Remember players like Mike Hart dominated their high school competition and went on to being UM's all time rushing leader. Hooray!
August 24th, 2012 at 9:57 AM ^
on 17 carries is impressive regardless. I dont care if he was playing against 11 midgets holding balloons in one hand. At that pace another 10 carries would have had him approaching state and national records. Im feeling really relaxed about Green's decision all of a sudden. I think we're good either way.
August 24th, 2012 at 10:04 AM ^
I have to ask: What is the significance of the midgets' holding balloons?
Are those balloons filled with plain old air or helium? Would your opinion differ if they were holding, say, whiffle ball bats? What if the little people in question were dwarfs instead of midgets?
Discuss...
August 24th, 2012 at 10:10 AM ^
The significance is, one of their little hands would be occupied and therefore make it more difficult to tackle Mr Smith. Of course there are other items that would make it a little more challenging for them like bats, chains, guns etc., but then we would question their motives. Balloons are harmless...
August 24th, 2012 at 10:08 AM ^
When they show Smith taking a swig of Gatorade after scoring on the bench, I can't help but envision him on ESPN wearing the Maize and Blue doing the same thing after scoring a huge touchdown against our rivals.
August 24th, 2012 at 10:58 AM ^
Is averaging 18.29 ypc good? I don't know man, kind of sounds like he's slacking off out there.
August 24th, 2012 at 11:09 AM ^
He was tired after only running 311 yards? Hell, I can run twice that far without getting tired
/That's the same thing, right?
August 24th, 2012 at 11:17 AM ^
Thomas had 10 tackles and a ff in the 3rd quarter not sure the final total ...hes a beast
August 24th, 2012 at 12:23 PM ^
While carrying a football though? It slows you down.
August 24th, 2012 at 1:28 PM ^
Very excited for this great kid. But going to need him to tuck that ball a little better once he gets here. Only see two touch points on almost every carry.
August 24th, 2012 at 2:31 PM ^
Looks like a tank but I have to remember he's playing HS football. Those trying to tackle him are smurfs versus what he'll encounter at the next level.
August 24th, 2012 at 2:37 PM ^
I am from the Ashtabula Ohio where Lakeside is, and they are bad.. real bad. On a high note, it is the high school that Urban Meyer would probably go to if he was living in Ashtabula in the modern day.
August 24th, 2012 at 3:53 PM ^
who was doing all the fumbling for howland early? they fumbled on offense, on a kickoff and on a punt return.
don't think de'veon returns kicks, but was the other one him?
