MGoShirt Alert - Day 9

Submitted by Six Zero on

“You say Goodbye, and I say Hello”

This is the ninth entry of the 2009 MGoShirt Alert, a design project that will enable MgoBlog readers to vote for upcoming designs in the brand spankin’ new MGoBlogStore.

As I discussed earlier this week, I sat down on Saturday morning and watched a DVR of the Friday night BTN UM practice, and fired up the laptop at the same time in case an idea or two came to me.  It was clear that above all other topics, you all collectively wanted an MGoBlog insider shirt to feature Tacopants, and I had just asked all of you for Tacopants ideas on the previous day.  It's a tricky concept, because Tacopants is very much a Henne/Coach Carr regime thing, and how could we possibly tie it together with the new and improved Rodriguez-era Wolverines?

Amidst the nasal inflections of Dave Resvine I came up with this design-- acknowledging the new, and signing off on the old.  I've tried to avoid doing front-and-back designs, but this one pretty much demands it and might affect the final price.  Naturally, this shirt is a bit dependent on the fact premise that Forcier will not suck and/or throw the ball like a 19-yr. old Chad Henne.  It does put a certain amount of pressure on the young Californian as well-- which pretty much sums up this entire offseason nicely, if I do say so.  Ha.

Now, in the event that Forcier loses the job to Denard Robinson, I've prepared this similar alternate version.

And... in the (gulp) scenario that neither are competent and the #8 returns under center, I give you this.

So, 2009 is here... thanks for the memories Tacopants.  Now hit the road.

So, time to vote-- on the Forcier shirt, of course.  What do you guys think?

Five Stars Four Stars Three Stars Two Stars One Star

***** Five Stars:  Tate The Forcier starts day one and never looks back.
**** Four Stars:   Tate can't hold off the speed&talent of Denard Robinson.
*** Three Stars:  Nick Sheridan is asked to again drop the clipboard and not suck.
** Two Stars:  A very nervous Nader Furrha is handed the keys to the offense.
* One Star:  Some guy named Kennedy takes the field.  And we don't wake up.

Yesterday saw the last of any canine biology.  I will say that the eee... Barwis shirt just looked pretty gay, and I even made a SuperGay version for all of the man-crushers out there, but on the sheer basis of defaming the entire Michigan fan base, I refused to use it.  So that's your Barwis-- sorry.  Besides, we already have Barwis's Gym.  Tomorrow we'll be going with something nice and basic, and I have another Friday fun activity for all of you to take part in before the milk and cookies.  So I'll see you then for another exciting edition of-- MGoShirt Alert!

This one is pretty good. Not sure though how the majority or fans will understand the whole "tacopants" though. But you are improving. Big Charlie Wies still has the lead in my book

I like the understated design of this one. Would consider buying. I just hope Demetrius Hart commits so I can break out the ol' "I ♥ ♥" shirt.

This is where I stand, too. I wouldn't mock anyone who wore it proudly to a game, but I wouldn't drop $20 on it, either. If Denard won the job and the reports on him were looking fantastic, I might pay for the Shoelace version. It's just such a great authentic nickname; you don't see those a lot anymore. Final note: Something about the mgoblog logo bothers me. I'd like the shirt more if it weren't there, or was somehow less prominent. Hell, put the same logo across the sleeve, even. It just seems to detract from the shirt in it's current location.

The simpler the shirt, the more entertaining and long-lasting it can be. Like: Guns Don't Kill People, Lamarr Woodley Kills People If there is a graphic, keep it simple. Like with shirt #1 (power of forcier), I think the quote alone would be sufficient. No Vader. It could be as simple as the quote on the front with MGOBLOG in the Star Wars font below it.

i'd like to see an illustration w/ tacopants. some on field action where one player is twice as tall as the others, but otherwise indistinguishable.

You want me to use a multi-column grid on two words? I understand you're a grid guy, but I don't think Muller-Brockman or Tschichold were designing simple tee shirts. Left align was too boring for this piece, and I have no problem employing a little stagger headline, especially when the one of the words has far more characters than another. Don't get me wrong, I respect your reactions. As for the tight kerning, I think we just have different preferences. Not into the Dutch modernism?

Actually, yes, I would have aligned the front of the shirt along the left-- as in manually aligning the left-most stems of the h and the f, in "hello, forcier." That would be opposed to the computer default, where it just aligns based on character real estate (the left-most edge of the stem of the h and the cross stroke of the f). New alignment in turn would create a little more space between the dot of the i and the comma after hello. The trick with lowercase "goodbye, tacopants" is the top word has descenders and the bottom features ascenders. Maybe then you align the g in goodbye with the first a in tacopants. Maybe you add more line-spacing and align the e in goodbye with the s in tacopants-- with care taken in either instance to ensure the comma and period maintain a consistent distance from their respective words. And no, I didn't expect you to whip out a multi-columnar grid for two words. It's just some reading I thought I'd suggest because I believe the grid strengthens design in general, whether it's on a poster or a t-shirt. I think the tiny details make a big difference. The kerning wasn't a comment on tight vs loose in general-- it was more in reaction to inconsistent kerning. Example: the space between the "ta" vs "an" in tacopants. At the very least, I believe consistent kerning on a design looks like thought was given to the typography, as opposed to just placing straight text on a space. There are times when inconsistent kerning may be a design element (if you're trying to make a statement on disorder or division, for example), but I believe a non-purposeful lack of kerning takes away from a design.

Didn't realize how much that 'an' space is off-- didn't really catch my eye until you pointed it out, and now it bugs the hell outta me. If this continues on as a finalist, I guarantee it'll be fixed. As for the left align, I did try aligning the verts of the h and f, but when I did the "i" in Forcier was almost directly below the "o" in hello, and it looked like a lollipop or something. And you totally nailed the issue of the ascenders & descenders with the back-- I just tried to sit them together in a way that allowed all of the characters to breathe.

I would love to see something more facetious about Tacopants' propensity to show up when we least expect him. To rip from the banner it could be something like, "The ability to throw a football is insignificant next the power of the Tacopants" with some sketch of Sheridan and Tacopants. We shouldn't say goodbye to Tacopants so quickly. Unless we have a Heisman contender at QB he's sure to stick around for awhile.

3.5 stars. Love the front and back designs. Who cares if it makes the shirt great? I'd be willing to pay more for a double sided shirt, should it be required. Tacopants is being made out to be something way more than he was ever envisioned to be. Strike a Pose is still my favorite.

It think it was a solid design. The problem with it is tht no one outside of the MGoCommunity will understand it. 3-stars.

I love it...especially how it says "out with the old, in with the new". also funny. (agree that shoelace would be better) but the #8 is classic, although Sheridan seems to chuck the ball into the ground more than tacopants would like.

...a bit too inside jokey. Is our current problem finding shirts we all love tied to the fact that there's not much about this team to love -- at least yet? Aside from Zoltan, Minor and Graham, I can't say I have much affection for anybody on this team yet. I mean, I hope to love Forcier at some point, but as of now...most of these players are associated with last year's memories, which = meh. Best shirts of years past are: 1. Zoltan for Space Emperor (of Space) 2. Worst State Ever 3. Charlie Weis should probably eat less (modeled nicely by my baby) 4. Jesus Hates wiscon SIN I note that three of these four focus on insulting other teams rather than praising our own. Since we have little on our current team to love, perhaps we should focus more on smackdown of others? We are Michigan, after all -- our smack talk is flat out wittier than anybody else's.
