Annnnnd...this is why I chose basketball over football.
Not something I feel like doing for "practice."
August 11th, 2012 at 7:27 AM ^
Nice to see Pipkins(56) get the better of Schofield (75). It was only one play, but at least it shows that there might be a little sliver of hope that Ondre might live up to the hype. This happens at 2:09. Also, Kalis passes the eye test.
August 11th, 2012 at 10:53 AM ^
Look at how low Pipkins is. That is what I'm talking about!! Talk about leverage.
August 11th, 2012 at 11:13 AM ^
just about to post the same thing about kalis. you cant tell that kid is a freshman.
August 11th, 2012 at 7:33 AM ^
Ondre Pipkins sighting ONDRE PIPKINS SIGHTING.
At 2:07, he handles himself very nicely against Schofield. Good balance at contact and through the play, uses his hands well, gets too high but somehow still fights through to the ball carrier when he looked sealed off.
Rumors momentarily confirmed: technique is a little rough still, but he is very strong at the get-off, and damn does he moves well for a gigantic human being.
August 11th, 2012 at 7:38 AM ^
Okay, if I wasn't pumped up before, this certainly did it for me. I was shedding blockers in my chair and jumped out my chair at one point. September 1st can't get here fast enough for me!

I know it was just the first day in pads... and only one drill... but these guys stood out to me:
Pipkins = Beast (as noted by all)
Hawthorne, Jack Miller, Ross, T. Gordon, Bolden, Omameh, Moore, Kalis
August 11th, 2012 at 8:52 AM ^
This is exciting!
One question for people who may know: why is the entire team standing around watching these one-on-one drills? I know this particular drill involves most position groups (and there is clearly something to learn from observing) ... but it seems like a waste of precious practice time?
August 11th, 2012 at 1:11 PM ^
They're not just standing around, they're waiting their turn. Have you played football before? Very few drills involve all players at once. As soon as those guys are done, three more guys step up and go.
August 11th, 2012 at 3:51 PM ^
YA!! Haven't you ever seen Rudy?

Great video. Seeing full pads in practice just reminds me that we're inchingever closer to the season.
It was just a brief clip, but I thought Kalis looked pretty good, and I also agree that it was great to see Pipkins out there - he looks like he has the base components (and he moves well too) to be pretty effective as it is. Granted, they're both freshmen, but it is good to see freshmen looking great before they've played one down. Very excited for the coming seasons as well as this one in that respect.
Also, about 2:40-ish...without looking at the roster to confirm, I think that was Bolden and Mateus smothering Houma. That looked pretty good too. Great to see play like that in an August practice.

Garnder is blocking as a WR on Countess in the play right after Hawthorne is on D.
August 11th, 2012 at 11:00 AM ^
Gardner is spending 90% of his time at WR. Despite what you may hear other places (even in press conferences.)
This isn't a half-a$$ed move. He is a WR now. His time as the number 2 QB is coming to an end shortly. This is a big big move.
The consensus with this staff is he is a high end NFL talent at WR.
August 11th, 2012 at 1:04 PM ^
Yea, dont listen to the coaches. Listen to mpbear, he KNOOOWS.
August 11th, 2012 at 1:31 PM ^
I just occasionally post what I'm told directly by people at these practices (the entire practice.) Enjoy.
I was also called a conspiracy theorist on this board by a few, when I said Devin was moving to WR full time after the first spring practice (when Brady Hoke didn't acknowledge he was when asked at his pressor a week later.) ;)
Recently I was called a conspiracy theorist when I said Bellomy will be the number 2 QB on the depth chart by the start of the B1G season (barring injury.) Get back to me on that.
Forgive me for thinking this little bit of information is relevant and there are people who would enjoy hearing it. You don't have to believe a thing.
If I'm wrong, call me out.

Please post more often. I appreciate your input and wish you'd spend more time on MGoBlog so I don't have to go tracking down your insights on GBMWolverine. You just have to ignore the rabble.

I will say this about mpbear -- he was the only person on scout who said from the beginning of the coaching search that Hoke was the only person really being considered.
August 11th, 2012 at 2:05 PM ^
in 2009 and only have 86 points don't post for attention. I buy it. It also makes sense -- this coaching staff is aggressive with their decision-making.
August 11th, 2012 at 6:31 PM ^
mpbear14... just want to confirm: you know this to be 100% true? It is interesting because Borges made it clear 2 days ago that Devin was stil the number 2 QB regardless of what happens at WR.
August 11th, 2012 at 7:24 PM ^
That Devin is working primarily with the WR's up until this point? This is true.
Is Devin currently the number 2 QB? Yes
Is the plan to have Bellomy ready to be number 2 on the depth chart by the start of B1G play and Gardner starting on the outside at WR? It's been the plan since the clock read 0:00 at the Sugar Bowl. (Barring any injury. Also, Gardner spent the first few practices of the spring with the WR's before Bellomy wasn't able to practice, then they moved him back to QB)
I've told this story several times on other sites. Last spring, before practice started, the players were basically playing a game of 500 on the sidelines, Devin goes up over Everyone and snatches a ball. Hoke leans over to my Dad and brothers and a host of other people and goes: "He's one hell of a WR isn't he? Then winks.
There are also some "trick" plays that I thought for sure they were going to run against MSU or Ohio, but never did. I hope I see them in Person in Dallas.
Need to make it through this fall camp with no injuries in the trenches. It's no secret, but we are one injury away on either line from being in trouble. It will be interesting to see just how phsyical has this fall camp is compared to last years given our depth problem in the most important position group in the game.
Hope that helps. Enjoy the weekend.

Countess dominates Roundtree I believe in this as well. Countess = good.
August 11th, 2012 at 9:37 AM ^
Pretty sure that was Gardner. Didn't Roundtree switch to 21?
August 11th, 2012 at 10:59 AM ^
-JoBo is gonna be good.
-QWash stays a little high in each rep I saw him.
-Omameh looks like a monster.
- Brandon Moores blocking skills worry me. (edit: It was Chesson, not Moore. so no worries)
-those pads were smacking baby. It's back!
August 11th, 2012 at 4:29 PM ^
I think it was Hoke in the video told QWAsh not to stand straight up. No Moore worries about Moore.

He's built for this thing! Big as a house! I'm excited about his future here at Michigan. You get a little taste of what this kid is going to bring at 2:08.
Yea, I know it's only practice, pads for the first time and all of that. He's going to be great!

lakeside:
1st play is Jake Ryan (90) on defense, not Ricardo Miller.
The RB in the 3rd play is Joey Kerridge (36), not Norfleet.
Blake Bars is #62 in the fourth play.
In play 7, it's Jerald Robinson (83) who gets demolished by Kovacs.
75 is Mike Schofield in the 10th play.
The RB in the Lewan/Roh 12th play is Thomas Rawls (38)
Joey Kerridge (36) is the RB in play 14.
August 11th, 2012 at 10:22 AM ^
You must recognize these guys? Cause I couldn't make out numbers on them. I did think the RB in matchup #2 was a bit big to be Norfleet.
