Michigan 1st Practice Reports Open Thread

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Open thread to post interesting nuggets coming out from Team 133's first practice.

From Chris Balas, Stephen Nesbitt, Sam Webb, & Wolverine Nation twitter:

Roy Roundtree: Amara Darboh was the most impressive freshman today

Will Campbell weighed in today at 310 lbs. Hoke would be surprised if he didn't play well this year.

Gardner did take snaps at wide receiver today.

Jibreel Black returned bigger. Both Black and Roh impressed in offseason conditioning.

Ricardo Miller will play TE and WR.

Fitz Toussaint and Frank Clark did not participate in first practice today.

Denard untied the shoelaces on the mannequin sporting his Cowboys Classic jersey:

That makes sense.  It seems like Hoke had a presser and some players were interviewed.  I don't have a sub to scout, but if you do there are player interview videos.

It seems like the only access the media is going to practice is when the BTN comes in.  The media will not even be allowed to watch the stretching like they were able to last year.

Roundtree on Darboh: "He's big, I was like man you've got the size of Ricardo Miller. But he's really fast and he's strong."

Edit:  From Chantell Jennings.

Starting to feel a bit more comfortable with wide receiver position. I know it's early but the size of Darboh and Gardners athleticism it is looking promising.

So you've never worried about something you have no control over?  Never worried it might rain on the day you planned your beach day?  Never worried your 401k might lose money?  Never worried that car coming up fast behind you might not be able to stop in time?

Lots of people worry about their football team.  Stop trying to make it seem weird to do so.

I'll worry in 30 years about my 401K losing money. Right now I hope it does because then I up my contributions and watch the shares rebound.

Nerd talk aside, it IS weird for people to worry about college football teams/games/recruiting/etc.

It's just a game. It's fun to watch, but when it's done, it's done. No amount of worrying done by anyone here will change anything on that field.

I love the dichotomy between "people attach too much importance to sports" and "come on these are sports we should be worrying / concerned about these things." If you're not on the team, why you'd worry about that team makes absolutely no sense to me.

You have it backwards.

People tend to worry less about things they have more control over.  Anxiety stems from uncertainty regarding outcomes we care about, especially when those outcomes are unpredictable.

Sports is the perfect recipe for anxiety: people care about the outcome, but they can't control it.   That's why superstitions are so common in sports (and gambling);  they are essentially attempts to feel in control.

We as fans and alumni respresent the team as much as they represent us and the university  and this is a michigan sports blog , so obviously we place a great deal of importance in sports. Why else would we hang out here hitting F5 whenever there is a slight chance someone might commit on a saturday morning.

I'm really excited for Rawls.  He didn't do as much last year because he just didn't have a good enough handle on what he was doing.  Now that he has a full season and a full spring under his belt, I think we could see big things out of him.

I could see an argument for letting them practice with the scout team or some similar demotion but not letting them play.   That way you can at least keep them engaged with the team and keep an eye on them until things get sorted out.

But its pretty hard to quibble with most of Hoke's decisions at this point.

I need to hear good things about the defensive line. I think WR is secondary to our D-line. Anyone know what Black, and Roh are up to now from the Weight Update thins morning??

I'm confident we'll beat Bama now. After the first practice it's been determined that freshman WR darboh is a beast, Will Campbell is all of a sudden playing like a five star stud, and The Alabama defense will move out of Thomas Rawls way. Easy Captain!
