Rees and Calabrese suspended for ND opener
About time.
Safe move by Kelly....Notre Dame would have lost anyways!
This means that Rees wasn't going to be the starter anyway. Book it.
Who is their opener against?
I am not going to tell you the answer - I cannot enable your laziness.
or you can answer the question and not be a prick about it
notice how when he would miss a pass he would imitate the QBs from NCAA 2008 by leaning back and slapping his thighs? Something always told me that it wasn't a coincidence. I think he played a lot of PS2 and thought that was good enough.
i never said MVP in actual football...
Or he was a walk-on who really loved Michigan football and never expected the perfect storm of events to happen to force him into active duty. I get that 08 sucked as a football season, but I try not to rag on guys who tried their hardest, but were placed in terrible situations by things outside their control.
Thank you! Also let's not mention that he was an 18 year old tossed on the national tv, with 100k+ watching live, and very little support.

He was a redshirt sophomore in 2008, so he was probably about 20. But your larger point holds.
I have. But that response could be given to almost any question posted on the blog. Why have a forum when people can just use google for everything? Why post this thread when the info is available on google?
I knew someone would take the asshole road, congrats on being the first.
BTW, it's Navy, if you're still wondering...
beat beyond recognition...sometimes deserved, sometimes not.
Or something.
Right, Navy in Ireland. I remember now.
but I would be upset with myself if I lost out on an all-expense paid trip to Ireland. That is a solid call, if you ask me.

So if your first game involves a nice trip, your suspension gets reduced?
What if they were playing Arizona? If the team visited the Grand Canyon on the way, how many games would that reduce from a suspension?
When I first saw this news story, I was thinking dismissal from the team for at least one of the two so this situation because a lot less severe than I originally thought it could be. It's a shame those two have to miss it. I wonder if they'll still be allowed to at least travel to Ireland?
Not allowed to even travel to Ireland with the team. Thats really ashame for them. Missing Out on a once in a life time oppurtunity.
Good point. No one has ever taken a vacation to Ireland. The only way to go is with a college sports team.
In fairness, I think he meant "Go to Ireland with your college sports team and play football there" which may very well be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
However, when people say that something is a "once in a lifetime opportunity" they don't really mean that it could never be replicated again no matter what (although this certainly couldn't be), it refers to an opportunity that may never come up again. Simply "going to Ireland in college with a group of your friends" could qualify.
MAYBE ISAAC w reconsider now
Difference - Rees was dispensible, Floyd was not.
Lets hope Hoke doesn't have the same suspension standards.
This could be interesting. Didn't Kelly's ND squad lose to Navy a couple years ago?
They got killed by Navy 35-17 in 2010. The year before, they lost to Navy 23-21.
Last year, they got over the hump and beat Navy 56-14.
Kelly says they failed to live up to their responsibilities? Right. Is that not what Michael Floyd did last year by getting pulled over for drunk driving 3 times?
Oh well. This is much more punishment for the players than I thought they would receive. I thought for sure Kelly would just say they learned their lesson over the summer like last year and then not miss a beat.

This decision makes Kelly look like a moron.
Floyd's incident occrued in March. This gave Kelly the ability to punish Floyd by making him miss spring ball.... Big whoop I know. All that matters is the games that are played in the fall... And Kelly messed up big time by not suspending Mike at least 1 game in the fall.
The Tommy and Carlo incident occured in May, and Kelly didnt have the option to have them miss spring ball. So I am not surprised at all that Kelly docked them 1 game.
I am still angry that Kelly didn't suspend Floyd for at least 1 game last year becuase i knew this argument would arise in the future... The "why didn't Floyd miss 1 game" argument.
The only logical answer I can come up with, is Kelly felt that Floyd had done enough to earn his was back on the field.
I don't agree with it. I think Kelly really messed up by not making Floyd miss any time last fall.
And for the record, Floyd didn't have 3 drunk driving charges. He had 2 drinking tickets as a minor which happened a year and two years earlier. And then the 1 drunk driving incident. I am not defending his mistakes, I just wanted to simply state the facts.
...NAVY.
Every time I think of this rivalry, I think of Roger Staubach. Wanted to go to ND, but snubbed and winds up at Navy, winning the Heisman. I love ND schadenfreude, no matter how archaic.
Floyd missed all of spring practice, lost his captaincy, had to move into the dorms, did community service and completed whatever else Kelly through at him.
Punishment was appropriate imo, Ireland is a once in a life time deal, especially with your college football team.
And as for getting rides, I figure Fitz would be available...Oh wait...
Good one.
phork me.
''Carlo and Tommy put themselves in a situation that when given a choice between two distinct paths, they responded with a set of poor decisions,''
Brian Kelly could have gone Robert Frost-ish here:
Players diverged on a South Bend street
And I have henceforth suspended both
Their people, get them, I shall entreat
An experience they can't repeat
Left to stew in Midwest undergrowth
Actually, that's a pretty significant hit by Kelly standards, missing a chance to start for your team on another continent in exchange for an all-expense paid trip down the street to play Purdue the following week. You're trading the beauty of Dublin for Danny Hope's mustache.
Hey is Danny Hope Irish? I mean, he's a ginger, his first name is Danny? I mean its still kinda the same thing. Am I right? Oh wait that's Jerry Kill (the ginger).
So was the initial report of Rees kneeing a cop incorrect, or did this kid get off real easy?
I think his mother came forward and said she's the one who did it.
The article doesn't say anything about the initial report being incorrect. Rees was initially charged with two counts of resisting arrest, battery and consumption of alcohol by a minor. Somewhere along the line, two of the charges were dropped, as he plead guilty to resisting law enforcement and consumption of alcohol by a minor.
Guessing most ND fans are not exactly weeping over losing Rees for a game.
