consider Mason the standard.  York has 907 and is still coaching at BC.  And he has about 73280 national titles.  I think it's actually 5, but that's still considerably better than Mason in that area.  And Jack Parker has almost 900 wins and is still coaching at BU.  And both schools have traditionally been pretty powerful, so it's not easy to catch up on them while they're still coaching.  Red should catch Comley easily, but he won't pass anybody else.  Keep in mind, though, Mason coached 36 years, this next season will be Parker's 40th and York's 41st.  In contrast, this is "only" Red's 28th season.  If he had started coaching college earlier, he'd be right up there with all of them.

Red does have the second highest winning percentage of all active coaches, at 0.669, 0.008 behind Jeff Jackson of Notre Dame, ahead of Dave Hakstol (3rd) at .653 and Parker and York at .645 and .614 respectively.  Mason is 4th all time at 0.696 and the most with over 350 wins.

And as a quick addendum, Red is second all time in wins at one school, behind Jack Parker who has all of his 853 wins at Boston University.  Though as noted, if Red was going to coach 12 years past Parker, he would only need about 8.5 wins per season to pass him.

he was gone after this upcoming season.  He did his big three year contract after a bunch of one-year contracts and was going to hang them up after 2012-2013.  Then all the recruits for 2013, 2014 and even 2015 started talking about how excited they were to play for Red and I started thinking maybe it was just something he was telling recruits, but maybe they knew something more concrete than we did.  And voila!  Here's another extension.  I think this is great news.  I know some there are always some grumbles about him and his age and his inability to win the NCAA title, even with all the talent.  And there's a grain of truth in that, even Red had admitted that, he talked a lot about it before the 2011 Frozen Four.  But I think he's still not only one of the elite coaches in the game, but also certainly a Michigan Legend (Leader?) and you don't get rid of him while he's still getting us to the tournament and wants to be here.

Here's to a season (or two, or three, or four) where the hockey team combines years like 1996-1997 and 2007-2008, with years like 1995-1996 and 1997-1998 and is not only the best team all season long, but is also the last team standing.  Coach deserves another few trophies in his case.

Question from a casual hockey fan: Is Red still as active in all aspects as he used to be, or is he starting to delegate more of his authority?

Red is still plenty active.  http://michigan.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1385751

I would think he does a little less and delgates a little more, but he's still pretty active.  I think if it got to the point where he was doing mostly delegating, he would step down.  I don't know if he's till doing this, but he took over coaching the PP either last season or the season before to try and inject some life into it.  It improved a little, though it still wasn't anything special.  But most schools have an assistant coach running the special teams, so if Red is taking on responsibilities traditionally delegated, he's gotta still be doing something.

He is quick witted, moves around the room well, and seems to have plenty of energy. I would hope we have a succession plan together when he does hang it up... but I have no qualms about his current ability to do the job.

This is actually the Upton Effect.  Scientists have been trying to study the correlation between Kate Upton's dancing and guys becoming drooling zombies that can't help but "succumb to powers beyond human control".  Unfortunately, every scientist we've put to work has devolved into staring at Kate Upton GIFs all day.

Good to hear.  It's funny to see that Red has been with the program for virtually my whole life (I was 3 when he joined up), but basically that whole time UM has been an elite program.  Happy to have him on board for another go-around.

Great news. Love Berenson for all that he's done for this program. I hope he can continue to succeed and keep the program at a high level. I have so much respect for the guy. He can coach for as long as he wants.
