Big Ten round-up

Big-Ten roundup for those who may have missed some items:
Justin Boren suffered a knee injury in practice and may miss 3+ weeks while rehabilitating it. The 105 roster for tOhio State appears to have been filled with the return of two players (WR Ray Small and DE Rob Rose) who appeared to be dealing with academic issues that still, reportedly for Small, are not fully handled.

Wisconsin has suspended two likely starters at safety from camp, making their future unclear and a start September 5th against Northern Illinois highly unlikely. Shane Carter and Aubrey Pleasant both have a solid amount of starts and their departure, however short, is a thorn in the side of a team that has faced a lot of criticism for not playing to its potential.

ESPN's pre-season All American list has been released and it features three from the Big Ten (and two from this planet):
  • Minnesota wide receiver Eric Decker
  • Penn State linebacker Navorro Bowman
  • Michigan punter Zoltan Mesko

ESPN Big 10 blogger Adam Rittenberg's all Big-Ten team features:

DEFENSE
DE: Brandon Graham, Michigan

SPECIALISTS
P: Zoltan Mesko, Michigan

Detroit News fluff piece on Michigan o-line

Hockey player AJ Sturges speaks out about Glenn Winston's reinstatement following a suspension from the team and jail time for an assault last year, upset about the unclear MSU policy regarding the allowance of players with prison records and suspensions back onto teams. Conflicting perspectives ensue.

Big Ten Gator Bowl movement.

Penn State cornerback AJ Wallace will likely be suspended for 1-2 games for academic issues.

Iowa cornerback Jordan Bernstine likely out for the season with ankle injury.

Yeah, even the homer in me can't really think of a Buckeye (and, to be blunt, no Wolverines) that honestly deserves preseason all-American hype. Maybe Pryor will earn it by the end of the year, but based on last year (and the numerous talented QBs dotting the landscape), he really doesn't deserve to be on that list.

I am, however, a little surprised that Benn isn't somewhere on the list. I think he's a little overrated, but he's definitely an elite WR (and certainly as good or better than Decker).

I wouldn't be surprised, however, to see Sean Lee climb his way up to second (or maybe first) team AA by the end of the year. Before his knee exploded, he was rock solid.

if you get all frustrated over the next 3 weeks or so, maybe you can do something stupid and join your extended family at the Lucas county correctional facility (aka; ex-running back Ohio State?), AND if the two of you happen to be roomies wear protection... std's are nothing to laugh about.

Further more if you really go over the top and do something extraordinary, Charles Manson is starting a new family...

Perhaps I was a little harsh in my previous comments, you see im from West Virginia and sometimes we dont have our thinking caps on tight.

From now on I will only say positive thoughts:

Like today, I found a dead and smelly cat in my front yard and glad it wasn't you... hope that makes you feel better...G-DAY!

Thanks partially to RR, the Big Ten will have fully entered this millenium soon. Also, I think it will only take one or two good seasons from UM to dispel the ages-old myth that you need stocky linemen to compete in the Big Ten when the weather turns. I never believed in the "weight provides leverage" argument, and the sooner it is put to rest, the better.

A sleeker, faster Big Ten with a UM team that recruits a lot down south and has imagination on offense should help the Big Ten catch back up with the SEC in a few years. I think the SEC has been light-years better the last few years, but I also agree with coaches and observers who say that it's cyclical.

UM and/or PSU has to win a title game or two, and three or four of the little eight are going to have to step it up for the Big Ten to catch up with the SEC's depth.

Is this going to be a regular feature of yours? I like it. Or, is it something you've been doing and I simply missed it before?

Edit: On the Iowa front, I believe their top returning running back has also been lost for the season due to injury.
