Im sure this guy is a good prospect but offer wise he is Cinncinnati, BC and the MAC.

Not entirely sure if this was a coup or anything, or just another project for Dantonio

This isn't a case of someone saying "no Michigan offer so he isn't that good" (though that does happen sometimes around here, even with MSU commits, and it is annoying), this kid really had very few decent offers.  He was injured apparently last year, and I haven't watched his film, but all signs point to him being a pretty meh pick up for MSU regardless, so I think robby has a fair point.

I agree that this is a pointless thread (we should not be validating Sparty to where we are making threads about their bad recruiting), but I only responded to voice my opinion, not because I was interested in Sparty's newest committment.

Do you know what I find "pointless" with respect to my interests?  Threads about NCAA Football '12 online dynasties.  Do you know my solution to that problem?  I don't click on them.

The "validating Sparty" point is silly.  They've beaten us four straight times, which is validation enough, and this is a football topic that directly affects our future games against MSU.

Stop cluttering this thread with this conversation and I'll do the same.

Their last 2 commits have been something of the "flyer" variety.  This kid had MAC offers to go along with Iowa, while Chmura had a MAC offer or two.  Apprently their low interest stems from injuries suffered in their junior year.

Whatever the case may be, good luck kid.

This is one of those ironic posts where I say Who-Cares-Why-Is-This-Posted and then mention that their class is nearly full and they *really* need linemen (both lines) and a strong safety. Hee hee hee, ha ha ha.

They got another guy yesterday, too.  That was Mark Chmura's son, who's also a tight end.  Neither of these guys is highly rated, but I think one or both camped at MSU, so if you believe that camp offers suggest that guys are underrated, these two might not be as risky/poor uses of scholarships as their star ratings suggest.

I mean, they've owned us for 4 years in a row. When they are continually getting skill position players (and good ones at that - Arnett,  Burbridge), it piques my interest

I thought it would be something new to comment on. Sorry to offend all of those that are not interested in this topic.

There really is very little else going on on the board right now, so I don't really have a problem with.  I do think your line of thinking is a bit odd with this commit though.  You cite other WRs that were generally well regarded (you could include Maderis on that list as well), but this kid is not really even close to their league.

Outside of WR they have been getting some decent skill guys, but nothing really great.  This seems like a flyer recruit (think Vlad Emilien, but not as highly regarded), maybe it will work out, maybe not, but I think there are other recruits/commits that MSU is after/has committed that are more worthy of discussion.

First, lucky is just a bad way of putting a team getting a commit. There is very little luck involved, especially for most teams this early in the process.

Second, MSU wasn't really shocking selection, the kid didn't really have any good offers, whether it's due to the fact he was injured his junior year or not, the fact remains the same.

You're really wondering why a WR in next year's class would commit because of their new QB this year who will be a senior next year?  Kids care more about other players in their own class, not the QB who will probably never be on the field at the same time as him.

Good luck to the kid, but this seems pretty meh even by meh MSU standards.

If he plays wide receiver the way he writes sci-fi, we'll be alright.

To seriously answer the OP's question about WRs, though, MSU has something of a history of successfully developing WRs into NFL draftees. I can see why a HS player would be interested in going somewhere with MSU's success at the position.

when there isn't one about 2014 LB Michael Ferns announcing finalists of Michigan, Notre Dame and Penn State today. Surprisingly eliminated home state Ohio but rumored that he and his family were not Buckeye natives or fans to begin with.  Sorry, felt this thread needed to be hijacked.

2014 St. Clairsville (OH) linebacker Mike Ferns' top 3 of and are more than leaders, they are FINALISTS

Kid is rated as a 4* with a 93 rating on 247.

He is the #94 player in the nation, #5 ILB and #5 in the state of Ohio next year.  This is a big time player.  Hope he selects us.

MUCH more important to discuss than Kilgore as the poster above stated.  However, i do not mind keeping up with what OSU/MSU/ND are doing since they are opponents.

Seriously it stuns me how stupid State fans are about the whole "4 year streak" yippie you've won the last 4 years does it really matter? You still trail the Wolverines by 32 games and the 3 games you did win was against a still developing and weak Michigan squad. 2011 was the year they won a legit game against us. This delusion of them being better blows me away. They haven't been truly dominant since the Duffy Dorey era when my dad signed his LOI to play for them.

I hate it when our fans try to spin it like the last 4 years didn't matter.  Face it, they won the last 4 games against Michigan and that sucks, but it's the truth.  Don't spin it. The players and coaches aren't trying to spin it.

"They kicked our ass the last 4 years" - Brady Hoke

Don't make stupid excuses or spin, hope the team steps up like we expect them to in the coming years and do something about it so that the rivalry gets back to the norm, because both history and the present matter, and it's annoying when both sides of the rivalry try to act like the only thing that matters is one or the other.

Michigan State had 4 WR's in their last class and one in this class. They have an average rivals ranking of 5.68. They also graduated 3 WR's at least(that I know of off the top of my head) and their best receiver may not even get to play for them.

Michigan had 2 in their last class and 2 so far in this one. They have an average rivals ranking of exactly 5.7. Michigan graduated 3 WR's that contributed, and kicked Stonum off the team. Michigan is also in great shape with Treadwell. I'd also be willing to bet Lewis is a better receiver than anyone Michigan State will sign in this class, and he may not even play WR for Michigan.

Michigan State has been a pro style offense now for years, and they've had good draft success. Michigan is going back to a pro style offense, but commits are probably still a little leary of coming here. With all that said, Michigan clearly still has the upper hand in one of their weakest areas.

So maybe Michigan State has luck, but that means Michigan must have better luck. Basically Michigan State is not doing anything spectacular so I don't see what the point of this thread is. If they were signing 5 5 stars, then yeah I would say their getting lucky. SIgning a bunch of 3 stars and then a guy who may not even make it to the team is nothing special.

Arnett already got approved to play for what it's worth.

MSU and their current offense have done a great job at developing players, especially receivers.  If they can continue that, they should be solid for a while.

However, I do agree that MSU's class is coming out pretty 'meh' so far, but I guess that's what they've done for a while now.  The only things that would concern me is that the top of the Big Ten are opening a talent gap between themselves and MSU.  Along with that, MSU isn't cashing in on the "best of the best" in Michigan and are tending to have to settle for solid 3/4* guys instead of 4/5* guys.  Even a couple of those will be a bit of a setback.
