2014 LB Michael Ferns skips MSU visit after visiting Michigan

Submitted by Steve Lorenz on

Per Sam Webb, 2014 LB Michael Ferns has skipped his visit to Michigan State after visiting Michigan yesterday. Both Webb and Steve Wiltfong from 247 made a point to update on Ferns during the middle of his visit, talking about how great it was apparently going. Ferns doesn't do many interviews, so I can't add much to it, except that it's funny that another top prospect (Ferns is likely to be a high four-star across the board) didn't quite make it to East Lansing.

Seems most prospects planning on doing both visits either skip MSU after visiting Michigan, or commit to Michigan after visiting MSU. Good stuff.

Can MSU even focus on 2014 right now?  Last I checked they only had 6 commitments in the class of 2013, since they would prefer to uncover hidden gems at their summer camp or guys who blow up on their senior film rather than taking the "overhyped" top 250 level players.  They aren't interested in a "mythical recruiting championship" because they recruit to their system after all.

Too bad for them, as we are already in the middle of our 2014 efforts.  They are falling behind.  Should be another tough season recruiting for them next year as well.

Dantonio has been launching toasters into outer space for months now. He knows his only hope to get better players than Hoke is to get aliens. This is why he made the comment about taking his time on recruiting recently. It'll take some time before alien lifeforms can get a hold of the toasters and translate his messages. Ballsy move on his part if you ask me.

This has to be a mistake. Dantonio has turned MSU into a national brand... at least that's what I keep reading. However, they never mention the country, were Sparty has become this power. Is it Mainland China, or Ecuador?

I say this because, it can't be the United States. Once you get past Toledo, you say MSU, and people think your talking about Mississippi State University. Only Sparty's, the Freep, and Matt Charboneau of the Detroit News... ever use Michigan State, together with the term National.

Have a story you guys will probably appreciate.

I work with a big Sparty fan and alum. When MSU beat both OSU and UM last season he wore Sparty gear for two weeks straight. Eventually we got into a conversation and Sparty's place in the Big Ten and he of course started spouting off about UM and OSU falling behind them. How we'll be playing catch up to Dantonio for the next five years. I just looked at him and said, "okay, 'little brother'" and walked away. Ever since, he's constantly trying to convince me how four wins in a row makes UM the little brother now and each time I just smile. They really are as butt hurt as you guys say.

After the win last year, the MSU team went to our band to mock us before going to their own student section. I got very close and personable (/s) with Jerel Worthy holding that atrociously ugly trophy. Seriously though, who does that? I don't think even OSU has ever done that.

MSU really needs to enjoy their time in the spotlight because they won't be able to maintain this level of success. Very few teams are able to consistently succeed with sub-par talent. WIth Michigan and Ohio stockpiling talent and then Nebraska, Penn State, and Wisconsin right behind, there's not going to be enough to sustain anything much at MSU.

MSU and Wisconsin seem to be anomalies.  Consistently recruiting lesser known players, often 3 stars, but hold their own.   UW has made it to a couple Rose Bowls with them.

I have no idea what that will mean for either long term but it has worked for a couple years.

Wisconsin has been holding their own quite a while now, whereas Michigan State has been good for about 2.5 years now and I still think MSU's can success has been largely helped by Michigan's bottoming-out as well as MSU avoiding Ohio or playing them when they are bad (i.e. last year).

MSU has almost no foothold for good talent in the midwest so the bottom is going to fall out soon enough unless Narduzzi is the second coming of Bud Foster

Going there because he heard it was on the way to some really amazing outlet malls and he needed some new van heusen slacks and some bass loafers but when he found out birch run was having a clearance, he just scrapped the whole thing. Got some good deals on pepperidge farm sausage gift baskets as well.

Hopefully this implicates that he is seriously considering becoming the first commitment of the 2014 class, which will hopefully out do this one. Not that this one and the last one are not GREAT because they are but we are building a DYNASTY! Poor little brother...GO BLUE!
