MGoShirt Alert - Day 5

Submitted by Six Zero on

“HARMON OF MICHIGAN.”

This is the fifth entry of the 2009 MGoShirt Alert, a design project that will enable MgoBlog readers to vote for upcoming designs in the brand spankin’ new MGoBlogStore.

Tom Harmon.  Ol' 98.  1940 Heisman Trophy winner.  2-time All-American.  2,134 yards rushing, 100 passes for 1,304 yards, 16 touchdowns, and scored 237 points.  Played both sides of the field for the entire game 8 times during his Michigan career. Also 2 years varsity basketball player.  Phi Delta Theta.  Even received a standing ovation... in Columbus.

But that's not all...  he spurned the NFL for the AFL.  Became a movie star to take the leading role in-- "Tom Harmon of Michigan."  He went to war as a pilot and was shot down.  Twice. On one of those occasions he spent four days alone in the South American jungle before hacking his way back to civilization.

Later he was awarded both the Silver Star and Purple Heart, upon which he came home and lived out the American dream of marrying a Hollywood starlet and became a radio football announcer.  And perhaps his greatest legacy is his family, including "Summer School" legend Mark Harmon and the twin stars of 80's hair wreck Nelson, who according to an acquaintance were last seen performing as part of the entertainment crew of the Carnival cruise line.

So I went with tradition today-- Elno, you asked for this yesterday, you got it.  Of course, we've now automatically alienated at least a dozen other readers who want this shirt to be about insider Blog content.  Probably the biggest obstacle here is the fact that not all of you want the same thing, so as some get what they want, others get... well, pissed.  SO TELL ME:  What do you guys want on yer shirt??? Insider MGoBlog humor that us and only us will get, or do you want the shirts to have mass appeal for the general Michigan audience?  If there's a general consensus, it will definitely help in delivering what the MGoCommunity wants.

So, time to vote!  What do you guys think?

For the weekend, I thought we'd try something a little different.  For all those witty critics out there, I'd like to give you a chance to be a part of this, and to contribute to one of the designs for next week.  It's no secret that perhaps the biggest star of MGoBlog is our good friend Tacopants, and sure enough I have a design paying homage to the legend himself, not unlike member Zero's (no relation) design on Blazefire'page.

But, Tacopants probably means a lot of things to a lot of people... So tell me, WHAT SHOULD THE TACOPANTS SHIRT SAY??? Who's got a killer idea for a Tacopants shirt??  I'll let you guys come up with a few ideas, hopefully one or two of them will gather up a lot of support, and I'll knock out a design maybe Sunday and put it up early next week.

So enough is enough...place your votes, discuss as you must, and remember-- a.) Insider MGoBlog shirts or general Michigan gear? and b.) What can you come up with for Tacopants?  Have a great weekend...

EDIT: I have no idea what it takes to actually accomplish getting these shirts made. So if getting two designs made is difficult, please ignore this. That said, if I had to choose betweeen the two I would prefer a MGoBlog specific shirt that only we would understand. There's enough general Michigan merchandise out there already.

I'd like to see a shirt with a receiver watching a ball sail over his head with the caption, "Don't worry, Tacopants will catch it!" (Or something to that effect.)

My feeling about what constitutes a great t-shirt is best described by Justice Potter Stewart: "Hard-core pornography is hard to define, but I know it when I see it."

perhaps a good design that could be a mgoblog specific shirt AND have mass appeal would be something akin to the Northwester '08 Survival Badge. I think we all know what i'm referring to there. I dont exactly know how to t-shirtize that, that's your job. also, an idea in a completely different direction: if you have these shirts already designed, release two/three a day. we should probably wrap up this t-shirt design contest sooner rather than later so that we can have them made in time for the western game.

I think its really hard to pull off the cartoon-y stuff. I think people respond to simple albeit clever text better than fancy artwork. "Worst State Ever" is brilliant. And you immediately get it. Think like that. IMHO.

I really like this shirt, so kudos on a good job there. Here are my thoughts about what makes a good shirt: - It's clearly identifiable as pro-Michigan - I'm going to wear it (this is pretty much just added because of yesterday's shirt--I don't want to insult all overweight people that I meet) - If it's an inside joke, I want it to be funny enough that I start laughing when I see the design. Slot ninja did the best in this category so far for me. - I reserve the right to discard any of these when you come up with an awesome shirt that doesn't fit any of them, so take all this with a grain of salt. I think Zero's tacopants design is pretty much right on--though it's a little shy on the pro-Michigan other than the colors. I think it might be best with that design and just adding "MGoBlog.com" to the bottom to give Brian a little advertising or make a joke about him hopefully graduating and getting drafted by the Lions or transferring with Threet. How about a similar Tacopants shirt with a New Yorker-style caption contest? Post the design about a week before and have people submit captions for it then select the best one or have a vote for it.

Every successful MGoShirt: 1. Has represented the prevailing snark and general internet nerdiness of the mgoblog community. 2. Is an obvious enough joke that a good number of normies would understand it. 3. Is legible from 40 feet away.

Riffing on the Rich Rodriguez as revolutionary meme, how 'bout a shirt like all those Che shirts you see with just Che Guevara's face on it but with Rich Rod's face instead. Not necessarily funny but I'd rock that shirt. It'd probably work best if there was some basic photoshopping done to properly mash up the images to preserve the essential elements of both ideas.

is the best one so far. It does'nt have the nerdy interwebs appeal like my favorite Mgoshirts but its still great in its own right. If youre looking for a good way to appeal to the MgoBlog culture you could always add an up arrow on the lower right of any design. Edit: jeag nailed it ^

It is a very cool shirt and not just in a returning to glory since 1993 kind of way like the Notre Dame shirts with old football pictures on them. This is a great honor to one of the all time greats.

I long for someone to come up with a better idea for a tacopants shirt than I can summon, but I'd be happy with a shirt that said "Tacopants for Heisman". I think he was in the running in 2005, but no one noticed because he is invisible.

threads (particularly formerlyanonymous' list) that you, combined with your graphics talent, should be able to make a number of good-looking, witty shirts. And if you incorporate "MGoBlog Naked Guy" into any of them, you are certain to have a winner. [I am sure that Brian would just love that]

Great shirt. Classic design. I wouldn't be opposed to the shirts having an MgoBlog logo on them. Either on the back/top under the collar or under the design. Also, I think that Brian's MgoBoard logo would be a great idea for an MgoBlog shirt.

For me, the Forcier shirt was the best so far, despite the wordiness of the phrase. It was successful because it had mass appeal outside of the MGoCommunity, but those on the inside could recognize it instantly as one of "our" shirts. It also was an awesome design. The Slot Ninja, Wolf/Pack and Tacopants ideas are a little bit too esoteric for the general audience. Keep trying, though. The designs have been awesome, even if we keep tearing them down for content. One of these designs will just hit the nail on the head, everyone will say, "THAT'S IT!!" and it will get 80%+ 5*. At least that's what I hope will happen.

1) I like the shirt, but will there be licensing issues? 2) These shirts are being designed for the MGoStore, which is on MGoBlog. People who don't read this blog probably won't be purchasing this shirt, right? So why would we make a shirt based on what "the others" think or understand? It would be like Abercrombie and Fitch designing clothes that old people like.

There's more to this site than +1/-1. I'm surprised by how frequently people incorporate it into shirt ideas. I liked this shirt, but I just don't see myself wearing it. Like chitown's comment about hard core porn, this shirt lacked the "now-this-is-a-shirt-I'd-buy" quality.

I gave it 2 stars simply b/c it has tom harmon on it. He is the best player ever to don the maize and blue. For any sport, ever. That said, the design looks like something I'd find on a clearance rack at Big Lots. Also the "Ol' 98" nickname (?) is tired. How about, "Tom Harmon is better than anyone on your team...and he's dead." I will vote 1 star for any tacopants shirt. I just don't understand the joke. Why is the invisible receiver called tacopants? Was the name generated from a non sequitur machine?

I like Tacopants for a couple reasons: 1) It is very MGoBlog. It is a community identifiable reference. 2) It allows me to laugh at pain. Turning the agony of way overthrown passes into something light and goofy is something I need to survive watching Michigan Football. I care too much. I think Tacopants is particularly appropriate because we have an quarterback situation involving a lot of inexperience this year. We are going to see Tacopants get a good number of passes, one way or another. I think a few bad passes are part of the amateur nature of the sport and something that our team can easily overcome. Tacopants' inclusion on the roster doesn't doom us to failure. Having a laugh instead of a groan doesn't make us any less loyal fans.

You must have definitely missed out on mgoblog v1.0. That is a shame, because Tacopants (one word) was all the rage. Him and Antonio Bass, who should have started at QB last year. I could definitely see that justly influencing your opinion.

and i say i'm not, as i have read this blog daily for the past two years or so. i just hadn't registered until late. i'm not an early adopter. i still have a rotary phone and all. at any rate, the tacopants thing is one of my least favorite meme's on this blog. i certainly wouldn't buy a shirt referencing it. let us hypothesize the existence of a tacopants shirt. if you are wearing one and someone says, "what is tacopants?" what exactly is your response? something along the lines of "he's the invisible 11 foot tall receiver that our qb throws to, duh?" at which point the questioner nods their head and moves on leaving you alone to revel in the glory of your insider status. maybe that is a positive scenario for you. not so much for me. a little to much snuffleupagus meets internet fanboy for my taste.

captainbatman

Well, there's no accounting for taste. Or sense of humor. So you don't like Tacopants. Fine. We explained it - you still don't like it. Fine, we get it. Vote a 1 on the shirt when it comes around. That's why there are votes. I don't think anyone's opinion is changing on this thing. If people don't know *who* Tacopants is, that's my opportunity to introduce them to the blog.

Six Zero, I think this is a great shirt, but I think it would be AMAZING if you got rid of the "OL 98" on the front and added a list of his accomplishments on the back, like the 2003 Student Section Shirt. Just an Idea.

At least, it is a bit sharper and has more class than the others. On the other hand, I think the content is just a bit irrelevant with respect to current Michigan football. I respect Harmon as much as anybody, but in terms of content I think we could pull something relevant to our current team. I like the simple execution and presentation of this one a lot more though.
