Jordan Wilkins Nearly Committed to Auburn

Submitted by hart20 on

Jordan Wilkins, the 4-star RB who's visiting this weekend, nearly committed to Auburn on his visit. For those of you who don't remember, we'll likely either take Wilkins or Green at the RB position, or be done with the position for the recruiting cycle. Of course, once he get's on campus,  he could be swayed, but it sounds like we're playing from behind on this one.

Article is paywalled, the pertinent information is in the title.

Four-star Jordan Wilkins respects his mother's opinion. Otherwise, the Rivals250 running back from St. Benedict in Cordova, ...

I would really love Green to be a part of this class.  Anyone with an orange streak of hair is ok in my book.

I do also like Wilkins, and I still hate Auburn for taking Kris Frost and paying Cam Newton and getting away with it.

So I'll settle for either.

I thought he would end up committing to Auburn this weekend and would never visit us. The fact that Auburn offered within the past two weeks and took the lead is telling of his desire to stay in the South. Say we land Treadwell, would a third (ok, maybe second) RB help our future offense more than a fourth receiver?

Committed this year, 3 last year, and then Hayes and Rawls from the year before. A 3rd RB is more of a luxury than anything. A 4th WR would definitely be more valuable. Most of the WRs on roster, no matter how much we may like them, aren't really the elite type that can stretch the field in Borges' offense. Darboh and Chesson are the closest we have, but they're freshmen. A WR like Treadwell is an absolute must get in this class, in my opinion.

Maybe Hoke means special teams for athletic running backs that aren't in the two deep.  I can see some guy like Drake Johnson, flying down the field at over 200 lb on kick-off coverage (and hopefully also playing RB as an upper classman).

I wouldn't mind seeing him play some time at RB. If that elusiveness can translate to the next level I'd like to see him get the chance to break a couple runs. Seems like he would need to get more physical, but I don't think splitting time between RB and slot would be ridiculous for him.

Yeah, I like Bailey a lot.  I'm not sure how good of a receiver he is, but he's a very good athlete.  I think you should always have one or two of those guys on the roster, little slot guys/punt returners.  I'm not too keen on filling up on 6'4" guys who can leap...and that's it.  You have to have a mix of talents to be successful, I think.  Braylon, Avant, and Breaston were very productive as a trio, but all three are very different.  Manningham and Arrington were very different but very productive.

I'd say the pertinent information is the part about him respecting his mothers opinion. We all know how Hoke is with mothers. Has he visited before? I can't remember.

Well, that means about as much as when Mathis "almost" committed to Michigan. Given how little an actual verbal commitment means these days (kids de-committing right and left), an "almost" verbal commitment is completely worthless.

If he has his heart set on going to Auburn and the only thing stopping him is his mom wanting him to see more schools, we are certainly fighting uphill. But if he's just wowed by a single visit and we have a shot to wow him just as much then there's a chance. It kinda sounds like the former though.

Does it sound like the former? It sounds like he went on a visit to a big school and liked it. No big shock. These articles are meant to be worth reading. Saying "he really liked it" is boring. Saying "he almost committed" says almost nothing more, but gives people something to talk about and reason to link the article.

Who do you think, If Hoke and all are set on taking another RB, do we approach / offer?  Is there anyone we think we can flip is probably more along what I am asking....

Sucks that we missed on Isaac but Green and Wilkins are both pretty good.  I just hope Wilkins gives us a fair shot and is able to visit next weekend.  Anyway, it seems likely that we might take a 4th receiver if we miss out on these two.  Are there any other RB's that have mutual interest?

The kid is Auburn all the way. He wants to be near home and he seems to have already made up his mind. Moving on...do we have any snake oil for Isaac? Or should we just bank on Green?
