Big Ten Recruiting Rankings: 5-28-12

Submitted by Ace on

Little of note in this week's recruiting rankings, save for Illinois jumping up a couple of spots after breaking double-digit commits. Have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day; thank you to the incredibly brave people who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their beliefs and country. Changes since the last rankings:

5-22-12: Nebraska picks up Dan Samuelson.

5-26-12: Illinois picks up Reon Dawson.

I think the interest in football was growing around here(I live 1.5 hrs away) until the 1-11 season. They have a nice stadium and tailgating at IU is great, they just needed a to pick a better coach or someone who had been a head coach at least. I was hoping they would have thrown some money at Mike Leach

For comparison, here is where things stood at this point last year.

http://mgoblog.com/diaries/big-ten-recruiting-class-rankings-5-29-11

Numbers of recruits at this point with 2012 on the left, 2011 on the right:

Mich: 18/12

OSU: 11/7

ND: 12/9

PSU: 8/8

Neb: 8/2

MSU: 7/4

Ill: 10/2

Iowa: 8/1

Wisc: 6/4

NW: 2/4

Pur: 2/1

Minn: 1/3

Ind: 0/0

Most teams are a lot further along than they were at this point last year. Nebraska, Illinois (despite the new no-name coach), and Iowa stand out the most. And this is business as usual for the Hoosiers.

Ilinois head coach Tim Beckman may be a no-name right now, but he's got some interesting upside. Plus, the last three coaches to come from Toledo are as follows: Nick Saban, Gary Pinkel, and Tom Amstutz. As Meat Loaf would say, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad...

Beckman took a Toledo team that had one legitimate playmaker with little support, and pretty much successfully ran an offense around him last season for 9 wins, including almost beating OSU. It wasn't an incredibly talented team, but they were pretty damn well coached. That's the only time I saw him because I don't follow UT football, but I could see him doing big things with the higher level of talent at a B1G school.
