ESPN BBALL Class Rankings
ESPN just released their recruiting class rankings for basketball... Kinda shocked that we are ranked at 14. If already posted, sorry didn't see it.http://insider.espn.go.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/classrankings
There's so few recruits in each class (relative to football) it's got to be even more subjective putting together these rankings. Plus... it's ESPN... so it's probably completely unreliable.
#9 class on Scout. I believe MSU is a couple spots below us. #7 on Rivals.
Shocked because we're ranked too high or too low? (Assuming too low).
No matter what the ranking, I like this class a lot. 3 potential early-on impact players + two under-the-radar types that fill roster needs.
I just assume on how stacked this class was for UM, that we would be in the Top 10... Obviously don't assume anything with ESPN's rankings... I noticed that on ESPN's football end of recruiting...
OK...I'm definitely on the same wavelength with ya. I initially thought you were surprised at how high the recruiting class was ranked. If this isn't a top-10 hoops recruiting class, then I don't know what is!
They only have our class as having four commits so it does not include Levert. I do not know if that would help our hurt having him included. My guess is that it would help.
Something strikes me as odd here....
#6 class in the nation Providence - 4 commits, 2 in the top 100 (#'s 21 and 23)
#14 class in the nation Michigan - 4 commits, 3 in the top 100 (#'s 18, 27 and 76)

Our bottom end recruits are very lightly regarded. Spike is regarded as a 2-star and Caris is a low end 3-star (not my opinion, the opinion of recruiting sites). Having a 2 star in the class drags it down significantly if you're using any math to determine the "best". However, using the eye-test, we can hope that Spike is a great fit as a career back-up and Caris is a late bloomer.
This is just something that bugs me, so this is nothing against you. I just don't like how Spike's been talked about as a "career back-up." You just never know, dude.
Also, I'm kind of puzzled by this whole "2-star drags the class down" meme. That's what it looks like ESPN is doing here, but how does that even make sense? Our class gets worse by adding a 2-star? It's not like he's dragging down our class and will hurt our team down the road, shrinking our chances of success. If you don't think he adds anything to the class, then that just means it stands where it was before.
The biggest reason I say this is because I don't see a "numbers system" that ESPN uses like Rivals. I've noticed in football recruiting rankings, ESPN tends to analyze class rankings by team needs in addition to player rankings (perception). In other words, I'm confused. But whatever, it's not like Michigan will not be as good because ESPN lowered their class ranking. Just gives us something to talk about.
You're right i don't know how he'll work out. But I've seen his film and Trey and Walton look good so i just assume. And he was brought in as seemingly a last resort to Trey leaving. Who knows if that is actually the case, but it certianly is the perception. And the argument for why adding a 2-star hurts is the loss of scholly. Conventional wisdom is obviously more stars=better and by giving a "worse" player a scholly it keeps us from a "better" player, dragging down the overall quality of the team. Again, not that I agree, but that is the logic behind it.
Yeah, I agree that he's almost certainly going to play behind Trey and Walton barring injury. I'm just thinking that it's possible Walton doesn't stay 4 years, and that might open up the possibility of giving him some meaningful minutes if not a chance at the starting gig.

So excited that basketall is a big draw at Michigan again and we are a team that will be bummed without a banner now!
So subjective with the rankings that it gets real tough. Is a class of two top 100 players better than one with two top 100 and some role players? In football bigger classes trump smaller ones because more players can equal more impact- with basketball its real hard when class iszes can range from 1 or 2 to 5 or 6. Averages don't work well when comparing a team with 2 recruits to one with 5, so subjective criteria really ocmes into play.
No matter how you slice it though we have one heck of a class coming in to build on the success of the past few years and keep taking this program to new levels!
who cares what the recruiting services say? they've already accomplished their goal by getting you riled up and posting links to their content, as well as getting you to pay some amt of money for it.
are you content with the recruiting class we have coming in?
moreover, do you think coach B is content with the class?

If being #14 going into 2012 entails one 5-star (Robinson), two 4-stars (Stauskas, McGary), and two 3-stars (Albrecht, Levert when he is signed), then given the potential here to see early and effective contributions from some players, I will take that regardless of what ESPN believes. I like this list quite a bit as it is, although I do find it interesting that the classes just above us on this list have similar distributions of rankings and talent.
Might "only" be the 14th best class in the country, but it addressed M's needs to a T and for that reason, I give it an A+
Thank goodness for Spike Albrecht. In an idyllic situation coach B probably doesn't recruit Spike Albrecht. If coach B had his way, Darius Morris would be getting ready for his senior season flanked by dynamic Soph Trey Burke and highly rated Derrick Walton arriving on the scene when Morris graduates. Nothing of this sort played out and it seems highly likely that Burke will be gone after next season, potentially leaving M with only true freshman Derrick Walton to man the Point.
Also coach B was able to land a really nice shooting guard on the heels of the defection of Carlton Brundidge. Caris LeVert is going to be a quality player. I see him as the second coming of Louis Bullock.
Great class overall, two bona fide instant contributors and probably instant starters in McGary and GRIII, a probable instant rotation player with a nice upside in Stauskas, and two really good long term core players in Albrecht and LeVert, with LeVert having the potential to mature into one of the best 2 guards in the league. I love it.
who gives a shit what espn thinks. We have 2 five star talents!!
Robinson is finally getting his due. He was underrated for so long. He will be a top 5 freshman in the country behind only Shabazz and Noel definitely in my opinion. I am really hopeful on McGary but not as confident.
