For our next entry, I am proud to recall the words of Rudyard Kipling.  The son of a transplanted British architect teaching in Bombay, ol' Rud traveled the world before settling down in Vermont, of all places.  He did pass through current-day Big Ten country in 1889, although there is no record of him stopping in Ann Arbor for an American football match.

Either way, some hundred years later his work caught the eye of one Lloyd H. Carr, with this particular line becoming something of a catch phrase for the defense.  I'm sure there's plenty of John Spyteks and Zach Kaufmans out there that still hear this line in their sleep.  And dream of killing quarterbacks.

For the eyes, they are part of a logo set I designed over a year ago, and actually just submitted it for consideration in another minor league hockey contest. I struggled with the idea of giving this one out because it has personal value to me-- it's currently my desktop wallpaper as I type this-- but it just seemed to best match the attitude and swagger of this shirt.  I played around with a tackling sled in its place, but it didn't have the same effect.

So, time to vote!  What do you guys think?

Yesterday some of you asked if I have a portfolio, and YES, I have two in fact-- one for branding and design, and another for hand-drawn illustration.  Now, are they currently online??  No.  I've built a personal Flash site, and it's pretty much ready to go... but I've since decided to link my branding work out to an independent Six Zero Branding site, and have opted to wait and launch them together.  Sorry... This is a cool shirt, but would people have any idea it's about Michigan football? I'd be more inclined to give it over a 3* if I knew there was a massive block M on the back or something. Also, Lloyd Carr is badass.

So licensing from the university is out of the question. We here in the MGoPeanutGallery should still be able to come up with something that brands these shirts as Michigan football without raising the ire of the AD or NCAA. Any great ideas?

I like the shirt but for me it seems more appropriate for a team like NC State where their nickname is the Wolfpack. But I do understand why you posted it.

This would work better if wolverines were by nature pack animals. This is just too much like NC State minus the colors. I like the humorous designs better.

You know that wolves and wolverines are not the same animal, right? I read your Kipling/Carr explanation, and while it's logical, I don't want to go to Michigan Stadium and represent myself with wolves.

This used to be (not sure if it still is) a tradition that the defense would say before every game. I know they did this before the Cap 1 bowl game and was the first time I heard about it. The D all got together in a group after dinner and said this saying. So, it does pertain to M football

From what I recall the defense has been saying this for a long time (I seem to remember an article where Glen Steele talked about it being said during the 1997 season). It was something that they would kick everyone not on the defense out(even the coaches). I hope they are still doing this. I like the design, but I can understand why a lot of people might not remember this.

Without an explicit tie to U of M or a strong implicit tie in there's always going to be something keeping the shirt itself at the really good rather than great/perfect level. Otherwise, I think the designs are great. Is the off limits to the block M/Wings an assumption or direct mandate from the AD? I imagine you guys checked into it before nixing it. Can we use est. 1817 or something?

I can understand if you aren't a big fan of the shirt, but I think we should refer to the golden rule when it comes to these threads. SixZero is coming out with 15+ shirts all on his own, and submitting them for our review. He's already posted more shirts than I would ever have been able to come up with, let alone have the talent to produce. If your reply is that "your grandma could do better," then call her up and tell her to spend her own time on a project like this. They guy is putting in a ton of his own time for little or no profit simply because he loves M football. He's gonna swing and miss a couple times, but if we get even one shirt made from his submissions, I think it's a huge success. Don't listen to the haters SixZero, keep the shirts coming.

There must be enough fodder from the happenings on the blog itself to draw from...none of these shirt designs capture any of the ethos of MGoBlog itself...I want to go about on gameday proudly identifying myself as an MGoBlog community member...I respect the work you are putting into developing these designs...but methinks you are missing the point of this whole endeavour IMHO.

there are a lot of things that just dont work with this design. -too many words (and text directions) to read -no real identity to m football -too obscure a reference for mass appeal -too serious? (i def prefer the funnier/cartoonish designs, esp if this is gonna be on a t-shirt) sorry for being a downer, just giving my two-cents in hopes it may help future designs. I really liked the first two, and i'm eagerly awaiting the rest

I almost feel you should write, on each post, daily, that you simply cannot use the block M or winged helmet. It's like no one reads the comments each time you have to remind them. I look forward to seeing your portfolio! I'm a graphic designer myself and enjoy seeing the work of others. Additionally, how much would the price of this shirt increase if you were to break the quote up-- first part on the front of the shirt, second part on the back of the shirt?

Okay, so everybody wants the helmet/block M, right? But we can't have them. So, using Six Zero's template (thank you, sir), I designed this. That is neither a block M, nor a helmet, but there's also no mistaking what it is. Also could be done without the "GO" if one prefers. Edit: Other way looks like this.

I do love that quote, the whole poem, and its significance, but I see everyone else's problems too. If the connection to the defense was emphasized better it would probably go over better in mainstream fandom. 3* anyway because I'm not sure if I would buy it or not.

Overall these shirt designs have been pretty meh so far... it seems like they all lack the simplicity and non-corporate feel that most of the popular mgoblog shirts have. How about something simple, but witty? I like "Power of the Forcier" the most (rated it a 3), but even that one could undergo some toning down I think.

It makes me sad when I have to vote down one of your shirts because they are all very creative and visually sharp. I keep coming into these posts hoping to love the designs. You do good work, and I appreciate the effort. I do hope, despite some of the negativity, that you're having fun with this project, because I have been enjoying checking out your designs at lunch each day. I haven't *quite* seen a design that I must own, but I'm confident that with your clear graphics capability it is only the matter of the right hook. Good work. Keep it up.

will help us get the woof woof back to the wolverine house. Like the slogan - but kind of Big Blue - we are the wolverines not the wolves, and so I think the slogan while good is not really apt.
