B1G logo-branding patches on football jerseys for 2012?
Eleven Warriors links to a Columbus newspaper [the Other Paper (!?)] article in which it slips out that the conference AD's have voted to place B1G branding logos on all 2012 jerseys.

Which got me to thinking what a Michigan #21 (Desmond Commemorative patch) jersey might look like, if you added a B1G logo, an American flag, and a bowl game patch. Here's an early mockup of that jersey design:

But have you seen the BIG conference logo?
What better to make a classic uniform maintain its iconic look than a modern and brightly colored logo. Maybe we can get helmet stickers that are a picture of Jim Delaney's face... that'd be cool for sure.

To suit the color scheme of the jerseys. They do it on the fields and courts already, so it won't be a bright baby blue logo, at least I hope not.

I hear ya, but a Big Ten patch isn't too bad.
Take off the American flag or move them above the nameplate on the upper middle of the back. We'll only wear bowl patches for the bowl (or better yet, don't wear a bowl game patch would be my wish). And nobody is wearing 21 this year.

Honestly, I'd take the flag off the jersey. It's already on the helmet, and I feel like it's not a huge deal unless we plan on scheduling a Canadian team or something next year.

I want it replaced with a hammer and sickle, maybe we could also have the entire conference change colors to varying shades of red.
Denard needs to stay an amateur, but maybe he could be a military officer with no other orders than to practice football, and I feel like Hoke's title should have "Hero of the Gridiron" in it.

But they need to be careful with this. I don't mind having a B1G patch on the uniform, as I think it's good to take pride in the conference (particularly one with the academic standard the B1G has). I like when the American flag is on there, because, well, 'MERICA! The bowl patch is something that is ok, I'm sure the players take pride in it and the bowl games will force it on there anyway. And I don't mind the legacy patches, as I think it's better than retiring jerseys (though we are still to see what happens if a number has multiple legacies).
I think whoever designs it all has to be smart with it though, otherwise you are right in that it will look like a Euro soccer jersey or NASCAR. Maybe the American flag on one of the thigh pads, a legacy patch on one chest, B1G logo on the other or on the sleeve. I don't really know. Either way none of this surprises me.

Seeing as how every other conference has these patches on their jerseys (and the Big 10 already has the logo on the helmets) I don't really see this as an issue.

I generally hate patches and ads of any sort, but i recently changed my opinion. I hated seing the nike logo at michigan stadium, but if they can keep prices lower, I am all for it. After I read the story about the older couple who had been lifetime season ticket holders, losing their tix because of the price, i am all for ads if the price remains constant or lower.

Not sure how Conference branding helps Michigan's bottom line.

I doubt they will have the full logo. They will probably just use the shortened "B1G" logo in small print and in Maize. I don't think that will look too bad, as long as it is not somewhere intrusive and is small enough.

I thought the full logo was long dead, especially after everyone pointed out that if the "B1G" was so clever, why did you need the redundant "TEN"?
I actually like the shortened "B1G", now that they had enough sense to get rid of the useless "TEN".
Now if they could just get rid of the Carolina blue and replace it with a strong, solid, manly dark blue or black.

That was another interesting part, that I didn't get into.
Just what was Dave Brandon's vote? For all I know, Brandon may have opposed this, and voted against it, but was outvoted by the other Conference AD's. I don't know.
So I am not going to personalize this, at least not on the currently-available facts. Indeed, while I don't know (until Brandon says one way or another) how he felt, I can easily see him taking the position that we at Michigan figured out how to deal with the jersey-retirement quandry, by adding "patches" to jersey numbers that we can't afford to retire anymore in an era of 120+ players on a roster. And we won't have much space for more patches at this rate. So let's figure out something else, okay? After all, every team might have some number-retirement issues, and you might like to try our patch program...
Who knows? Anyway, I didn't start this specifically to flame Dave Brandon. But the guy does have a blog and a Twitter account. Maybe this will prompt him to say something before the boxes of 2012 jerseys get delivered to Schembechler Hall.

The Sugar Bowl unis shot down my earlier theory that people hated the bumblebee unis that we wore at MSU because we lost. We won the Sugar Bowl and people still hate these. And rightly so. Ugh.

I don't mind them. I think the M on the shoulder was unnecessary but other than that I think the design is okay. Keep in mind that Hemingway's uniform was particularly busy because of the Desmon Howard patch.

It won't be too bad if we have a blue patch (on the home uniforms) With a maize outline B and then a solid maize 1G
On the away uniforms it would be a white patch with a solid maize B outlined in blue, and then a solid blue 1G outlined in maize.
Team, Family, Country, Conference, Bowl Game? Where does Domino's fit in?
IME the Desmond Howard patch, and whatever patches they add in the future for other jersey numbers, looks dumb in the first place. Just retire the damn jersey number. Or put names and numbers around the stadium somewhere.
What if there end up being multiple superstars with the same number? Will we eventually see jerseys with three or four patches on them? (Granted, this would occur some distant time in the future when everything will be different anyhow)
To me, the conference logo is quite innocuous in comparison. They should also make sure to leave space for an Arby's logo in the future.
Do NOT retire the jersey number...in fact, UNRETIRE the current retired numbers.
Honor the names...build statues, make a ring of honor, drop banners in the entryways...WHATEVER. Stop retiring numbers, it's stupid. There's no criteria and you run into situations where some guys are just as or more deserving (ala Carter and Woodson) as guys who are currently retired.
Retire the practice of retiring jerseys...that goes for ALL sports.

I think the patch idea is fine, but the execution needs to improve. Make the patch a lot smaller. All it needs to say is "HOWARD 21." We can figure out the rest. The patch should pretty discrete. It shouldn't take up a big chunk of the shoulder pad.
If two legends share a number, just make a slightly-larger patch with the two names on it.
The players didn't have enough flare anyways.
