META: OT Board

Submitted by NYC Fan on

After seeing 100+ responses to a question about whether one should attend law school or not, I want to raise the idea of an OT tab where users can ask questions as often as they would like.  Sample questions could be, I need a laptop, what model would you suggest?  Do snow tires really help rear wheel drive vehicles?  Was American Reunion a good movie?  Where are some good areas to sit at a Tigers game?

I think the OT tab would be better than having some specific questions being posted on the main board as they are today.  I am not sure how difficult this addition would be, but I do feel it would be nice to have.  There are a lot of smart people on this board who share similar interests and it is great to hear outside, unbiased opinions.

Thoughts?

I thought that was an interesting enough thread even though I have no plan to ever attend any law school.  I really don't see the need for an OT-specific board - I see it as somewhat likely that the board content becomes more watered-down with an extra board.  The important things already get discussed here, why spread yourselves thin in your moderating duties?

Can we start a board strictly for Dave Brandon vendetta posts too? At least we could label them DBV, so that those of us who'd like to avoid the petty tears about minor uniform changes and band travel arrangements could do so at a glance?

I didn't think that; then again, I'm not thinking too straight after having plowed through the posts on that thread.  Yeesh.  A bit of advice: skip all the negged comments there.  The 10 minutes or so having read them are among the ten most wasted minutes in my life (and believe me, that's saying a lot).

I am thinking of trying to get into the Ross school of business after I graduate from fhsu. Does anyone know any things I can do now to make my resume better and also how hard it is to get into school there?

But if the Mgoblog community influences that poster to make a better--or more informed--life decision, isn't that a good thing?  More than worth however much time you spent reading a thread you hated/didn't care about. Nobody forced you to read the ensuing "treatises."

Some people were interested, it's the off-season, and there's not a whole lot going on.  That's the whole point of "OT."

Maybe a better solution than a separate tab for OT threads would be to increase the number of MGoPoints needed to start a thread. . . 649 points seems like a reasonable number.

Cause you sir, deserve it. What a wonderful idea...no matter if it's yours or not. PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN!

Hey, I got an idea...I can do like the band people and start a petition for the board to sign!

And that board would likely degenerate into Yahoo! Answers. I don't want Yahoo! Answers mixed into my MGoBlog. The thing with questions like in law school thread is that they're widely relevant and are about important life decisions. Asking about snow tires, etc. might get responses at first, but after a month, the response to similar threads would start to dwindle. This is board gets pretty OT in the summer anyways, so I don't think a separate board is necessary. Opening an OT board also creates an avenue for undesirable posters to start ruining the experience for a lot of us. In this case, the cons outweigh the pros.

The idea would make it easier to see when stuff relating to Michigan football has already been posted. It would clean up the queue considerably and probably result in more pure sports discussion because people would be reluctant to click that "OT Tab" and announce to the world that they are, truly, wasting time on the internet and not on something with inflated importance.

I think it would be pretty cool to have a separate board where we can talk about non-sports related stuff. Like TV or best type of sandwiches (Reuben btw) or travel advice. I've seen it done quite well on other sports forums. We should do it. And by we I mean Brian. Since I don't have any control over this sort of thing.

My all-time favorite seats for watching a Tigers game were any of the first few rows in the overhang (Right Field Upper Deck) at Tiger Stadium.  I have yet to find any really good upper deck seats (other than maybe upper deck right behind Home plate, and they're overpriced) at Comerica.
