M Softball Crushes [Michigan State]
The Michigan Softball team traveled to East Lansing to put a thumping on sparty 8-0 in 5 inning mercy-rule win. We started out a tad slow but in the top of the 5th inning, the bats exploded for 8 runs.
Lauren Sweet went 1 for 3 (HR) and 3 RBIs. Amy Knapp went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Ashley Lane went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Haylie Wagner started in the circle today. She gave up only 2 hits while striking out 2. She also went 1 for 1 with an RBI.
Overall, sparty is a very bad team. So it is expected that we win. The game started slow but we game alive. I always say, a win is a win.
Congrats to the ladies. I will be at the game tomorrow, tailgating. So stop buy and I will have a cold beer for you.
[ed: Sister related nicknames are verboten on mgoblog]
I am cringing so hard at "Lil' Sister."
not a very good team that past 10 years or so. But this year they are downright aweful. They will probably finish in the bottom 2 or 3 this year.
We are still atop the B1G with Purdue and Nebraska hot on our heals.
How about Spartina, then? Come on, we don't need childish namecalling. It's old and we're not MLive.
So it was MLive who started calling OSU "Ohio"?

Which Ohio again?

A: "Ohio" is not derogatory or sophmoric by itself.
B: I hate "Ohio," think it's stupid and childish nonetheless, and hope it dies an awful death.

LOL...I know all about the consquences of using the moniker spartina...
It's just a mild insanity trip he was experiencing as he was trying to think of every way to belittle a football rival's girls softball team.
wish I was. My comuter is freezing up.
or little brother for that matter. It's stupid and pedantic.
is a matter of opinion. I have many friends who are msu grads, including several former FB and BB players. We go back and forth so it is just a habit.
Friendly banter between colleagues does not equal anonymously using a pejorative term to an unknown audience. It is acceptable to lovingly make fun of a sibling’s haircut, for instance. Doing so to someone with whom you do not have the same level of understanding, however, is typically regarded as unacceptable.
Mgoblog is typical? People need to relax. msu is lil' borther and lil' sister. Always have and always will.
Im getting tired of people getting "offended". Why dont we stop talking then in fear of offendings some simple minded person in St Johns Mi.
This is a Michigan Blog. What do you expect.
I better not hear anyone on this thread call msu lil brother anymore. If the softball team cannot be called lil' sister, then the lil brother term is forever outlawed as well.
“I better not hear anyone on this thread call msu lil brother anymore. If the softball team cannot be called lil' sister, then the lil brother term is forever outlawed as well.” Good! We’re in agreement then.
“This is a Michigan Blog. What do you expect.” I expect us to act with some degree of maturity. Opposing fans refer to us as scUM and the skunkbears. Does this upset me? Certainly not. Rather, I believe it reflects negatively on them. Similarly, I feel like using terms like lil brother, lil sister, O$U, or the suckeyes cheapens us and reflects negatively on us as a fan base.
Get off my lawn, etc.

am not that PC. It appears obvious that you dont have the same interaction as I do. I probably have more interaction with sparty than many people on this blog.
I will continue to call them lil' bro and they will call us scUM. I do not find it offensive. The world is in harmony. Lets play it out in the classroom and the athletic fields NOT on Mgoblog.
I appreciate the updates. Good to see the bats starting to heat up. That wasn't the case even against lesser opponents earlier this year.
As to Lil' Sister, some people need to chill out. Banter between fan bases is a good thing.
are inconsistant this year. I hope we can get into a rythem for the next month and get a home site for regionals.
As for bantering, some people dont understand the push and shove that goes on in the office around Detroit. It is an every day discussion. I have worked with sparty my entire career and have to listen to "Izzo for Savior" everyday.
I'm originally from Toledo and I understand the back and forth. More Buckeyes than Sparties, but it's there.
I worked for a company who had its HQ in Findlay OH. You talk about a rough "hate week". Many of the guys played for Fostoria, then ohio. It was rough for sure.
like you have some real good experience in banter.

I have posted here on several different threads about my relationship with sparty and ohio. I am proud to be a Michigan Man and I will forever defend her honor.
Thanks for the kind words.

keep up the good work. Dont let anyone here try to keep you down.
whether FB, hockey, softball, or tiddlywinks is threadworthy. Thanks for the update sir.
EVER! Had me rolling.
100%
Not digging the "lil sister" thing. Little sister is what MSU calls us sometimes when they beat us because they thing its a huge one-up on little brother. Little brother is acceptable sometimes, little sister...is not...unless we're all in elementary school
not see you on the board after we beat them this fall calling them anything but the MSU Spartans. I will be watching. This is a Michigan Blog in case you did not know.
I may throw out a little brother or a moo u or a STAEE but you won't catch me calling anyone little sister. And yes, I'm aware this is a Michigan blog. It ain't mlive though
Besides that, today was the spring scrimmage, lots of recruits are in Ann Arbor, Hoke is busy "pointing" things out that Team 133 needs to work on between now and the start of the 2012 season. We all should be happy, rather than picking each other apart over use of the word "sister" to describe msu...
Jeez, that was the most inane little dig at MSU and 3/4 of the posts call you out on it. Ease up, Mgoblog.
My advice, if you're gonna get this much shit for it, you may as well go for the gold:
M beats the hell out of Glorified Community College of East Lansing/Generic State Safety School, as expected.
LOL, +5. that shi cray
it's akin to calling OSU Ohio, in my opinion. Not inaccurate but moderately irritating to the institution at which it is directed.
got here after the "little sister controversy", so I will chime in to say that, yes, State is a terrible team. They're sitting somewhere in the upper 100's of RPI as of last week, I'm not sure where they were before this game.
That said, a win is a win and one that moves the team closer to a Big Ten title is extra sweet. Later this year MGB faces off against them on their home turf, and I would love to see firsthand if Spartan tears do, in fact, taste like Sugar. My bet is yes.
I'd also add that any time a young team can hit eight runs and let up two hits is good, young teams are inconsistent and can play down to their competition more regularly than an older team would.

are you going to the game tomorrow? I have a cold one waiting for you. I would enjoy discussing the finer points of the game over some brews.
I'm not, although that's probably obvious at this point. I'll be in East Lansing for MGB's game, but I don't think I venture north this semester other than that (WMU comes here and I'm not driving all the way to Mount Pleasant for two non-conference games) unless the cards happen to deal a NCAA tournament berth with Ann Arbor hosting a regional.

Congrats to them! Hopefully we can do the same thing to STAEE later this year.

It's actually gender correct to refer to the MSU Softball team as "Little Sister."
