UPDATE (quote from Izzo):

“Based on the information we have received, Derrick Nix has been suspended indefinitely from our basketball team, and his future with our program is uncertain. He made an irresponsible decision that has put his future with our program in serious jeopardy.”

@sbell021

Not making excuses for Nix, but if Dave Brandon would have just tweeted him advice on the perils of drugs, this could have all been avoided.

What's the chances a kid is ridin dirty yet has no trace of it in his system?  Possession of weed might not be a big deal, but driving while high is a different story.

Oh, for fuck's sake. I was smoking pot before you were born, and there were plenty of times I was so stoned that I wouldn't be safe operating a blender, let alone operating a two-ton vehicle at 50 miles an hour. I'm not asserting that driving after any amount of alcohol is safe, but the notion that being high is automatically safer than drinking a small amount of booze is stupid. How "high" is "high?" You potheads crack me up.

I would have this rogue cop fired.  It should be standard protocall for bball players to be immediately released when found with weed.

It's weed....not like he was driving around with a mobile meth lab!

When you are an overweight and underperforming kid on a well respected and successful program you should try to stay clean. I am thinking Izzy may see an extra schollie opening up and will take advantage of it. Had this been a good player the punishment would be next to nothing. That's how these things work.

2 weeks before season starts he will be reinstated and sit out the 10mins of the season opener against Western New Jersey Tech & Mining....

Weve seen this over and over and over again with MSU....talk a big game , say all the right things for PR purposes then do NOTHING...

...that guy.  Although you left out the part about the 2008 DUI/MIP (not simple possession), and the 2011 DUI, which resulted in a year long suspension served concurrent with a redshirt (no lost eligibility).  Even after the third arrest for parole violation, there were folks on this board who were adamant that he be given another chance.

All this to say that I'm more comfortable pointing out the ethical failings of other programs when we can look at our own without the homer glasses on.

So you're saying Nix should be suspended for the entire basketball season next year then, right? Keep in mind Nix has already sat out basketball games for skipping class and contemplated transferring from the team

I didn't leave out anything.  Brady Hoke had nothing to do with what went down in 2008.  If you want to argue that Rich Rodriguez wasn't strict enough, fine, but what does that have to do with the program now?  Under our current coach, Stonum never saw the field.

Snarling:

He was already suspended and then got booted for another violation, right?  So that's a bit different.  He already had two violations, got suspended, THEN got another violation which led to being booted, right?

That's a world away from Nix, who just has this one marijuana bust.
