Joe Mathis Cancels Visit; still plans to take official to Michigan

Submitted by Steve Lorenz on

Hey guys, talked to Joe Mathis a little bit ago who said he had to cancel out on this weekend due to personal reasons. He still plans on taking his official to Michigan. Disappointing as the coaches would have had a golden opportunity to make a good first impression.

EDIT: In case there were any questions, this includes his trip to Detroit for the Adidas Invitational

that's very disappointing.  Getting him on campus early would've been so clutch.  By the time he visits for his official, he'll have been to USC a good handful of times.  Not as optimistic about him as I was an hour ago.

Do we really want him as a part of the family.  Just asking the question . . . Guys that want to "be a part of the family" are the guys we are looking for!  Recruits consistently talk about the FAMILY!

What are you talking about?? We want him to want to be part of the family. His recruitment is far from over and you're already saying we don't want him because he doesn't want to "be a part of the family"? In that case, let's end recruiting right now, if you don't commit in the first few months it means you don't want to be a part of the family.

I'm not going to question a kid who cancels a visit on Easter weekend.  Maybe his "personal reason" was his mom being pissed he was leaving town.  Let's not cast judgement . . . yet.

Mathis and Cravens are cousins, I live in the same city as Mathis in Cali and he continues to get more and more attention weekly. USC is the frontrunner got both, I hope we get them but it's not looking bright.

Much like Cravens, Mathis seems very interested in Michigan. He referred to Michigan as "the capital of football" when I talked with him. He's also been quoted a couple times as saying he didn't want to go to a school because of the name or prestige; he wants to be wanted. Michigan has been recruiting him very hard and there's definitely mutual interest there. The fact that he cancelled this trip is not indicative at all of a lack of interest.

It sounds like Michigan has made a good first impression on him.

Would be nice to get him on campus at all but may be more advantageous to leave a lasting impression as his last visit. It sounds like the coaches have expressed serious interest so as long as he comes on campus all is well.

As always, it is a very important decision and I hope he makes the best for him as the coaches are trying to do the same for us.

should only come in for the best game day experiences - ND, OSU, MSU. Having them come on random spring weekends does no good usually.
