Rivalries: Notre Dame or Michigan State

Submitted by Ryan91 on

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, with all the talk about the rivalry with Notre Dame. Who do you think is our second biggest rival, Notre Dame or Michigan State?

I've always felt it was Notre Dame.... if Ohio State is our archrival, Notre Dame is that kid who you hate because he's a little too much like you. To me Michigan State is what it is, your competitive little brother you need to put in it's place. And Minnesota is your best friend from high school who clings to you long after you've moved on.

I get geared up to beat Notre Dame more than MSU, but hate to lose more to MSU.  I don't know which of those feelings makes for a bigger rivalry.  I'd have to say Notre Dame, since MSU is simply annoying to lose to.

With the win percentage and everything; atleast we are playing for something. In the past beating ND early on would make you feel pretty good about the rest of the season.

MSU is more of a rival in Hockey and Basketball, IMO.

In hockey, I want to see every State player get his ass beat.  I couldn't stand watching State win the NC a few years back because I knew the we were better.  A have had season tickets for 12 years, since I was in 2nd grade.  I got to watch all of my heroes every time they played at home, but even as a young lad I hated State.  I yelled like a heathen at those game.  And Notre Dame wasn't even competitive until about 2 or 3 years ago.  The game at the palace lat year felt like a joke.  One of my friends even had the balls to go hit on one of the Notre Dame band members (he saw her from far away and decided it would be cool to buy her dippin dots. once we got close to her we saw she was a dog, but he still went for it. she said no to the dots and threw them in his face.).  I cant forsee any chance of me or anyone I associate with doing anything but give the finger to a State band member, maybe a moon.

I'd hate ND more than Sparty - but I think the MSU rivalry is bigger though because it has been going on for 100 meetings whereas the ND series has had a lot of breaks in between.

Plus with ND being a non-con game losing to them doesn't impact the big ten standings -I recall some losses to sparty that have cost UM a conference title.

Notre Dame with Weis makes ND bigger to me. Willingham was a likable guy; Weis is just insufferable. I'd rather beat ND out of principle, but beating MSU is more important overall. Not by much though, considering Michigan needs ND to at least be decent in order to have some kind of OOC schedule.

So definately ND (not even a question).

I think MSU may be a bigger rival for some people from the state of MI, because they may have a lot of friends/ family that went to MSU.

Also, I think that Fat Charlie has really pissed off a lot of M fans (because of the brady thing).

Michigan State!  I can't believe anyone would think Notre Dame.  MSU week was always huge growing up.  I'm not an alum, just one who grew up in Michigan a die-hard fan, and you HAVE to beat MSU.  Beating Notre Dame is nice, and losing to them sucks.  Beating MSU is mandatory and losing to them absolutely fucking blows because their fans are the world's most obnoxious and insufferable pipsqueak little bastards.
