OT Lions re-sign Kevin Smith

Submitted by robbyt003 on

Title says it all.  I think that was an excellent call by the Lions management.  Now the Lions will have three RBs in Jahvid Best, Mikel Leshoure, and Kevin Smith to help split the carries.  I would like to see Best as a Sproles type RB with limited carries and more receptions.  Then hopefully between Leshoure and Smith they can take the bulk of the rest of the carries.

Very good move. I bet they're kicking themselves for not picking him up earlier in the season last year.

This reminded me of one of the dumbest moments in the Matt Millen era.

The Lions unexpectedly cut Kevin Jones in March of 2008, shortly before drafting Smith.  Here was Rod Marinelli's take on it:

“With the off-season program beginning next week and with our draft preparation intensifying, we decided this was the right time to make these two roster moves. While there are always a number of factors that go into this type of decision, we do believe these moves bring clarity to our roster and also eliminate some uncertainty heading into the draft that would have otherwise existed."

Who the hell wants to eliminate any uncertainty that other teams might have about your draft strategy right before you draft?  If you decide that you need a running back, fine, but don't tell all of the other teams about it.

Dude.  He's correct.  I actually just glanced at your title the first time and assumed the Lions axed Smith and you just wanted to use the word "resign" for some reason.  No joke.  Not until you changed it, and I again scanned the board for new posts I thought Kevin Smith was no longer a Lion.

This is a good move. The Lions can't have too many running backs, considering how they get chewed up during the season. This is especially true due to their curious lack of attention to upgrading the o-line (cue in additional worries about Staafford getting killed).

Best and Leshoure have yet to get through a season. Kevin smith has not recently played a full season. Would have loved the "law firm" here but we missed the boat on that one.
