NC Residents: Get U-M License Plates!
The U of M Club of Charlotte and the Michigan Triangle Alumni Club have been working hard at getting specialized Michigan license plates. We need to get 300 orders for plates before the state will start production and are almost there.
Below is the official information and the link to the formal application. If you are so inclined, please do not hesitate to order! I think Michigan might be the only truly out-of-state plates to get issued here in NC - they have Clemson, South Carolina, etc. but nothing as far as Michigan to the best of my knowledge. Pretty cool!
UM License Plates
Interested in a University of Michigan license plate for the state of North Carolina?
We are partnering with the Michigan Triangle Alumni Club (MTAC) to offer University of Michigan license plates for your vehicles in the state of North Carolina. We are accepting applications and deposits for the plates. A regular UM plate is $25 and a personalized UM plate is $55 (please note that personalized plates are available on a first come, first served basis). The link to the application form is below. The completed application and check* or money order may be sent to:
*Make checks payable to U-M Club of Charlotte
All checks will be deposited into a club account and held strictly for license plates. When 300 paid applications are received, license plates can be created. DMV will then either issue the plate to you or will contact you directly with information.

I am so freaking jealous.
from the Triangle club. I would totally do it but I'm leaving the state this summer so I'm not sure its worth it. Either way, its super awesome that this is happening.
Its worth it if just to enable your fellow displaced alumni show their M pride.
I'll look awesome on my wall later anyway, right?
That's awesome. I will likely be getting a new plate within the next month or so, and will definitely order one. I've wondered how this hadn't happened already, as I'm pretty sure I saw a Wisconsin plate sometime in the last year or so.
Go Blue!
I've seen a couple Purdue plates, which I found somewhat odd.
considering they don't seem to me to be that common in the Indianapolis area.
But apparently you weren't hallucinating: they're also available in Delaware (??), Pennsylvania, Maryland, Tennessee, and Texas.
What's interesting is that most Big Ten states, including Michigan, don't allow out-of-state plates (Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Indiana prohibit them as well), so maybe that explains why they're elsewhere - schools can focus efforts on fewer states. If Purdue can round up enough interest in NC, certainly Michigan can as well.
Forwarded a link to this thread to my UM alumni friends at Duke... spread the word!
I signed up a few weeks ago and have been waiting for word that we've received the necessary 300 applications. Thanks for helping spread the word to those that haven't "formally" signed up with one of the alumni association branches in NC.
Hopefully we are close to 300.
wish I could get that in the state where I reside.
I should probably start reading the MTAC newsletters. On that note, I'm outta here. Have a great weekend fellas, I'm off to OBX.
So I'm guessing this doesn't have anything to do with North Campus?
I can be anything you want it to be . . . Some people see things through different glasses. Take this guy, for example:
It's for people who are living/working/schooling in the new extreme southeast section of campus. Start at East Quad and head southeast for like a day and a half, you can't miss it.
Rarely does a day go by that I don't see anyone in Chapel Hill wearing a Michigan tshirt/hat/whatever.
My sister who graduated from UNC-CH this December and waits tables had a group of OSU fans she was serving during The Game this year. She didn't say anything to them about the game the entire time they were there except when they were leaving she let out a big "Go Blue!" Smart move by her, they probably wouldn't have left a tip.
/cool story bro story.
in Indiana! We freaking border Michigan.
But I am guessing that Ohio won't go for the plates.
but obviously UM would not be allowed no matter what. (I don't know that I'd want a UM plate on my car if I lived in Ohio. Targeting? No thanks.)
They went out of their way to exclude out-of-state schools:
-
1) The group shall be based, headquartered or have a chapter in Indiana;
-
2) The group has made broad and significant civic, community, and charitable contributions across and exclusively in Indiana, or are descendants of native or pioneer residents of Indiana under IC § 9-13-2-170;
Anyway, they've been trying to push a bill to kill off most specialty plates as it is ... while it would make sense to offer more (and thus collect more revenue), it's unlikely to happen, especially with no surrounding states allowing out-of-state school plates.
I'm moving from NC to SC next week. a little late but better than never!
Awesome. I had seen the Purdue ones and wondered how the heck that happened without Michigan having one. Nice.
This would work really well in Boston, as long as they didn't design it so it looked like a block M with the word "Assachusetts" right after it...
haha...he said "assachusetts"
Could you please please please make Texas your next destination?
As you can see at the website below, they have Michigan State, but no Michigan. You don't understand how upset I was when I found this out.
Surely there must be more Michigan alums in Texas than State alums
EFF YEAH. 90% sure I'm going to settle down in North Carolina once I'm able, so this is awesome.
The weather is great! If you're considering settling in Charlotte, hit me up and I'll show you a good time.
/not gay
I really love it down there. I have relatives in Raleigh, but I prefer the mountains. I spend a lot of time in Asheville and hope to end up somewhere near there.
Not that there is anything wrong with that!
I could swear I have seen a bloody O plate though.
On a separate note, any MTACers going to the Gerald Ford movie screening at Raleighwood next week? Here's the info:
Join your fellow Triangle-area Wolverines on Thursday, March 29 at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6) for this special screening of the upcoming documentary, “Black and Blue – The Story of Gerald Ford, Willis Ward and the 1934 Michigan-Georgia Tech Football Game.” The film’s producer and director, Brian Kruger, will be our special guest for this invaluable story of teamwork, justice and the Michigan spirit.
Is that on top of your registration? Or just in total? State of Illinois cost me over $200 for my plates/registration.
They are considered "personalized" so its an extra $25. Registration is pretty cheap down here but then we have automobile taxes to pay, which suck if the car is new.
Consider my disbelief lowered.
Well worth the $10
Great job U-M Club in Charlotte!!! Pretty cool that you got this going. I live in Michigan so it doesn't affect me, but I love seeing Michigan stuff wherever I travel.
Their costs $1 more per plate. I wonder where that extra money is going??!! Bama fans in NC, you better ask some very serious questions of this Kim Hendricks in Greenville, NC. Rumor has it that she's using the extra $300+ dollars to feed her addiction to Krispy Kremes . .
.
Done and done.
I'm pretty sure you don't but you could always reach out to Tom and ask him. He's very accessible and helpful.
I'm just on the MTAC mailing list
The Illinois fight, as told on MGoBlog.
And, the current Illinois Secretary of State's office .pdf for available collegiate plates.
I just got new plates on both my vehicles in NC about 3 weeks ago. :(
the additional $25 fee for each vehicle, you'll get new tags without having to re-pay for the base registration fee.

Unfortunately I did not attend of UofM, is there any way of me getting a plate? I live in Charlotte and have friends that would be interested.

Not an alum either, but I am gonna fill out the application. Is this ok?

I don't believe the state of North Carolina cares at all which plate you want, what you want it to read, or if you're an alum or not. Have you seen some of the ridiculous vanity plates around here?
