Brewed by New Glarus Brewing Company, hands down my favorite beer that I've ever had.
Is your disposition on the Fat Squirrel or Apple Ale?
Spotted Cow is great.... Have relatives in Wiscy that bring me some new glarus around the holidays
I know you're not asking me, but I really like the Apple Ale. That being said, I enjoy almost anything apple flavored.
How good it is. Especially around the holidays when apple goes with everything you eat.
I haven't been to Wisconsin for a while and when I do I usually get Spotted Cow. I'll keep those in mind though, I've been looking to try something new from New Glarus.
Is a little heavier. But it is really hard to find something on the level of spotted cow.
but Tyranena is another Wisconsin brewery that makes some very good beers. The best beer I've had is from there, it was a limited edition for winter/spring 2011 called "Shaggin' in the Wood" scotch ale. They made a permanent scotch ale they call "Sheep Shagger" which is good, but isn't as good as their first one.
I'd recommend anything from their Brewers Gone Wild series; I've enjoyed every one I've gotten to try.
are they the ones that make left handed milk stout? because that is a scrumptulecent (sp?) beer
100% agree. I also enjoy Moonman, so if you haven't tried that....yeah, give it a shot.
I like both Spotted Cow and Moonman from New Glarus, but don't forget Ale Asylum's Hopalicious.
I'm looking forward to my next trip to Wisconsin.
From Wisconsin originally. Spotted Cow is the best beer made. On tap especially.
Im going to have to buck the trend.
I despise Spotted Cow. It is a tourist beer and Wisconsin makes tons of beer that is much better.
Spotted Cow is made for Budweiser drinker who wants to feel like he/she is drinking a hip micro-brew.
you're my friend now.
Call me when you get over your illness.

you're both jokes
It was only a matter of time before they'd appear and look down their collective noses at those of us who don't want their beer to plop in the glass like mud.
I believe I like nearly every other beer they make, though, and up until I moved out of Madison in 2008 I had tried them all.
cow tipping
Definitely make your way to the Great Dane, good beer and good German pretzels. Also Restaurant Magnus has great Chimichurri.
Really good food. Ate there after the refs screwed us in whatever they called their outdoor game
I will also vouch for the Great Dane. We had wonderful service there in addition to the fantastic food and booze.
Great Dane is classic Madison food. If you want good fried cheese curds, you can get them here. They've got some good beer too.
The Great Dane is a good place to take people from out of town, but if you're going to go to the one by the Capitol, get in early. You'll wait an hour plus on a Friday or Saturday night if you're not there by 6. Same with the Old Fashioned, which others mentioned - I like it better than the Great Dane, but waits of 1.5 hours plus are not uncommon.
has been closed for over a year. The restaurant that took its place (in the old morgue) is a seafood joint called Tempest. It is very good. Live music too.
Restaurant Magnus closed so he could concentrate on Michigan recruiting profiles. Madison's loss is MGoBlog's (and TTB's) gain.
Try The Malt House. Also hear that Brasserie V is good, but I have never been there.
Brasserie V is one of my favorites. Just down the street from there is Jac's another favorite of mine.
double post. I will add the farmer's market near the Capitol if you are into that sort of thing. It goes year round and is great in the summer. Right now it will probably be cheese and seedlings.
Located right by the capitol building - great place for drinks and they had the best damn fish tacos the last time I was there.
And if it's a nice day, grab a beer and hang outside at the university's Union on the lake.
If you like Fish Tacos go to South Beach Bar and Grill next time you are in San Diego. I will keep your post in mind though, I'm moving to Madison in August for my wife's grad school.
I would recommend just jumping around from place to place
Any bar on state street has great local micro brewery beer. New Glarus is excellent, but being in Madison, you should try Capitol Brewery and take a tour of the brewery out in Middleton (West of Madison) if you can. Enjoy! If you like Indian food there's a place off South Park Street around Fishhatchery Rd.
Can't go wrong with Supper Club from Capitol.
If the weather holds, go to the union and have beers on the lakeshore. Pretend you're a student (act like you belong and don't wear your M) so you can buy beer there. If you're carded youre out of luck. Better yet, join up with a UW coed.
Have a burger at dotti's or tornado room.
Go to the essen house and drink a boot of beer. Don't set it down till its empty.
Rage on state street.
Eat breakfast at mickeys dairy bar.
Do it again.
Dance. Just F'in dance, Bryan. And don't care who's watching. Just dance.
This is actually good advice for trips to Cleveland, Port Huron, or Topeka too. Just in case you're ever there.
If you like relaxed dive bars, check out The Plaza Tavern at 319 N. Henry Street and have a Plazaburger. As I recall, it's off State Street towards the Capitol.
When I first moved to Madison, my girlfriend lived more or less around the corner.
Lao Laan Xang on Williamson is really, really good. And if you get it "native Lao" hot it'll hemorrhage you.
I go up there from Chicago anytime I can and always have a blast, I love Madtown.
Eat a Usinger bratwurst, preferably on a pretzel roll. Lots of good bars and food. Went to Great Dane years ago - thought at the time it was named for Ron Dayne, becuase they were pretty crazy about him, IIRC.
I live in Watertown, WI (about 1/2 hour from Madison). There is a deli here that makes the best brats in the world. Better than Usinger's (which I like too). The name of the deli is Glenn's. Go for the Sheboygan Brat or the Cheese Brat. Highly recomend it to anyone!
I would say you have to hit a fish fry if you are in town Friday night. I think the best ones are Avenue Bar on the East Washington about a mile from the Capitol and Quivey's Grove in Fitchburg (south of Madison).
The other great places to eat and drink that have been mentioned alreay are Brasserie V, Old Fashioned, and any of the 4 Great Dane breweries in the Madison area.
Not that anybody cares, but I heartily endorse both of these whether you go for the fish fry or not.
There's a lot of fun things to do in the State Street area, but be prepared for crowds. The Kohl Center is hosting the high school girls' state basketball tournament today-Saturday so expect everything to be flooded with out-of-towners. Also, the outdoor farmer's market isn't open yet, so don't plan on going or you'll be disappointed.
One place that nobody has mentioned yet is the Vintage Brewing Company on Whitney Way (not the Vintage bar near campus, although they're owned by the same people). It's another brew pub with classic Wisconsin food along the lines of the Great Dane, but I've actually found their beers to be better overall. If you've got a car with you, it's only a 10-15 minute drive from the campus area.
From Wando's. Disgusting mixture of many liquors and liqueurs and sugary mixing solutions. They used to make you have 5 people standing-by to order one. I've had a few good times up there the past 3 years.
good ole wando's. Everytime i go there every floor is jammed back though. If you like the younger crowds, whiskey jacks is a great bar
Thanks for the tips. I'm staying right on Capitol Square so the Old Fashioned is likely my first stop
