The end of "Ohio"?

Submitted by Section 1 on

Okay, I'll be that guy...

Is this the end of "Ohio" and "Beat Ohio"?

I suspect not, at least from the football program officialdom.  They've drawn that line; I don't really expect them to back down.

But for common usage among fans?  The ones that don't happen to be going to a Brady Hoke luncheon speech that day?  What will any fan-on-the-street be thinking, when saying "Beat Ohio!"  Will it be, "D'oh!  That first-round tourney loss to a 13-seed?"

Is this the trashtalk-equivalent of Appalachian State?  How long before Beilein and Brandon get a rematch with The Ohio University Bobcats?

I said the same thing to one of my professors in school who went to Ohio. He was decidedly not amused by my suggestions.  Apparently, it's tradition and as a Michigan fan, I need to understand that these are things they hold near and dear to their hearts. Or some BS like that.

I'll jump down the hole with Section 1 on this one.  I hope the whole Ohio thing ends.  I'll say it, I think it's stupid.  It's juvenile and unnecessary.  It doesn't add to the rivalry or anything, it just makes Brady Hoke as the coach and us as fans look dumb.

Were you here last fall?  I'm pretty sure anything and everything Coach Hoke has done has made him look like a genius.  11-2 ring a bell? Sugar Bowl Champs?  Top 10 defense?  Beat OHIO for the first time in 8 years?? Nothing? The only thing that makes the fans look dumb is questioning Hoke at this point.

Brady Hoke calls The Ohio State University 'Ohio' for a simple reason: he heard Bo call them Ohio.

I was privileged enough to be in the meeting room on the eve of a number of Ohio games. Each time, the meeting was capped by one of Bo's fiery speeches. Each time, he called them Ohio. Each time, he explained the golden pants tradition and implored us to live up to the great tradition of our predecessors, a tradition that is so strong that our arch-rivals created a ritual to celebrate a win over us. If you think that is stupid, I cannot help you.

Make no mistake, Brady Hoke doesn't give a shit what you think. The reason he is beloved by Michigan Men is because he is wise enough to let these private things public, a sort of wink to the people who share his background. A lot of you thought the 'Team 132' thing was new. It isn't. A lot of us took great pride in having a coach who knew, loved, and embraced our traditions. It is an inside joke, that only a few understand. Those who understand it love it, particularly after the disastrous RR tenure, during which so many of us felt betrayed by a program that was not our own. Hoke has done everything he can to bring us back into the fold, and 'Ohio' is just a small part of that.

For the record, and for guys like Section 1: we were right. We don't hold being wrong against you; we don't expect you to understand. We do not need your admissions of guilt for the RR fiasco. We do not need your thanks. Just cheer.

We're back to the "I'm more MICHIGAN! than you" line of arguing.

This is the worst thing the Rodriguez era brought, that people have to whip their Michigan Man credentials out like a dick on the table to prove themselves.

If you root for Michigan, you emotionally respond to wins and losses, then it doens't matter if you were in the room with Bo, or you bought an M hat at walmart when you were 12 then went to Eastern, you can count yourself a Michigan fan and you shouldn't have to post your resume about why you're one of the real Michigan fans who get it.

We all know what Section 1's deal is, and despite his crackpot, tinfoil conspiracy theories about Carr, the administration, Brandon and the Freep (that one's only partially crackpot), he's stil a Michigan fan.

You can call his argument's stupid or ridiculous, but to set yourself up as a REAL MICHIGAN MAN, with the obvious connotation that everyone else isn't, is quite frankly imbecilic and the worst characteristic of Michigan arrogance.  The whole universe of fans make the University and the athletics program what it is.

a)  I don't have any conspiracy theories about Lloyd Carr.  None.  I claim no information -- nothing -- beyond what I have read in Three and Out, just like everybody else.

b)  I have little to say about Michigan's athletic and academic administration beyond what is obvious.

c)  As to the Free Press and the general press war on Rodriguez (you brought it up); my general views are virtually all the same general views as those of John U. Bacon, Brian Cook, Jon Chait and Frank Beckmann.

Oh, and this; yes, I am still an alum, still a supporter of the University and its athletic department, still a Victors Club member and still an interested observer of the university's intercollegiate teams, hoping that all of the student-athletes excel.

Don't find some perverse glee in floating over Michigan losing by twisting it to some failed crackpot crusade. You're missing the point- you don't become a Michigan fan by hanging out with Bo. You are a Michigan fan when you would rather see Michigan look good and do well than make a failed Michigan coach look good by your school doing poorly or being cast in a bad light.

All he's saying is the glory he enjoys is being created by the very people he's bitching about. He's not even asking for gratitude...just a big can of STFU.

But I'm willing to bet I know Brady Hoke better than most, because he coached while I was there. As I said, we share the same memories, the same pride in the program and its traditions, and the same respect for Bo. So I feel qualified to say that Hoke (and I, and many others) call them Ohio in deference to Bo, not to 'add anything to the rivalry'. It's how we were taught.

I'm not into making Section 1 less of a Michigan fan, I just want it to be known that he was wrong and we, the asshole old guard, were right. Now, we should all just cheer for our boys. That cannot be very controversial at this point, can it?

I'm not into making Section 1 less of a Michigan fan, I just want it to be known that he was wrong and we, the asshole old guard, were right.

Now that is a fascinating and provocative statement.  What was I wrong about?  What were you, the asshole old guard right about?  Be specific; don't hold back.  I'd like to know all about those two things.  Because all that I have ever claimed was that Rodriguez treated awfully and unfairly in the press and that the unfairness spilled over into his entire tenure in Ann Arbor.  I know damn well that I am right about that.  I am too smart, to pretend to be able to debate technical football and coaching techniques with anybody, and I am too smart to listen to anybody on MGoBlog who tells me otherwise.

Now, we should all just cheer for our boys. That cannot be very controversial at this point, can it?

Only because a couple of years ago, getting "the asshole old guard" to "just cheer for the boys" was a bit of a chore.  And that is why it remains controversial at this point.  It is a controversy precisely because of people like you, who have been a bit selective about your cheering.

We were right about Hoke being the right hire. Seems pretty obvious now, doesn't it?

As for not rooting for RR and his Michigan teams to succeed, I can honestly say I was willing to flay the meat from your bones if it meant producing a winner. My loyalty, and that of my old team mates ought not to be questioned. We bled for the colors, literally. We want nothing more than for Michigan to win, and to do it the right way.

I must have explained this to you 100 times already, but RR dug his own grave by losing. If he had won, we would have taken joy in being wrong. He didn't.

Did I have my doubts about RR? Yes. Did I suspect he would ultimately fail? Yes. Was he treated unfairly? Probably. Was he the biggest failure in the illustrious history of this program? Undoubtedly. Did I do anything to handicap him? No. Did I root against Michigan? No. Are you a know-it-all asshole? I don't know, I'm asking. Should we take a vote?

To win and experience proper Michigan Football, run the way you experienced it, and all the great things that come with it. You should have supported more losing seasons, losses to our conference rivals, and bowl game blow outs. None of THAT sucked for the players...but glad everyone was looking out for them.

As for your last question, check the top of the post- I think we already did.

You summed up my opinions almost perfectly.

I have many reasons to love Hoke, a lot of them selfish. He makes the program feel like home again, etc.

But what I loved the most about last season was what it meant to those seniors, who finally got to be a part of Michigan-as-I-knew-it. It makes me proud that those guys got to feel what almost all Michigan teams got to feel: glory. Glory for winning at Michigan. Glory of upholding the winningest tradition the world has ever known.

I remember reading RVB's comment about where were the Michigan Men in the past, and weren't RR's teams wearing the same helmet. He certainly had a point, to our great shame. But only this past year was he able to realize that the helmet doesn't make the Michigan Man. The act of winning, and doing it the right way, the act of becoming a spoke in the great wheel of Michigan football, is what makes the Michigan Man. This is why all of the boys, to a man, love Brady Hoke. He made them 'get it'.

...Van Bergen definitely said it better, and with more authority, than I could.

I agree with that.

Although I think Section 1's thread is pretty dumb, and I completely against this loss forcing us to change out approach to our archrival, I think it's a little harsh to say he'd rather revel in victory of being right than have Michigan win.  Yes he might be more prone to boasting at times, is extremely stubborn and, honestly, can be at times, but that doesn't mean that he would rather be wrong than have Michigan win.

Someone made the same accusation to Brian after UTL, and Brian freaked out at the guy.  And it's clear why, he—like Section 1—an opinionated person, who can be stubborn when wrong and can be boastful when right.  However, that doesn't mean he doesn't love the Univeristy and it's teams with all his heart.  The same goes for Section 1.  He might be being that guy, but my money is that on the other side of the series of tubes, he's not smiling about this game.

"See? That Ohio thing and Hoke are silly, AREN'T they?" that's the only thing he posted. I'm guessing he's the ONLY guy who thought that was a reasonable post right now. Talk is cheap; actions speak louder than words. Brian was waiting to say "I told you so". The difference between him and Section 1 is Brian got over it because he enjoys seeing Michigan win more.

It's just that I had Ohio University advancing in my NCAA-pool bracket.  After the way Michigan played against Ohio State, I thought the team was slumping.

But I also had Mizzou as a final four team, and Duke and Wichita State advancing to the Sweet Sixteen.

Shows you what I know.

Nah, I had Wicheta St. as a "cinderella team" in a couple brackets of mine, making it to the Elite 8 and beating Kentucky, and making it to the sweet 16 in my other two.  I was rather unhappy to see them get eliminated so early.  Thats the tournament.  I'm just happy I didn't have Mizzou or Duke to the final four.  I made sure to text a good high school friend who is at Duke now, thanking him for making our loss not the worst of the night (although I guess by then Mizzou had already lost).

Eh. I'm not really supporting the thread.  I honestly like "Ohio" a lot, and I will keep using it.  I however, am against someone questioning another's fandom.  Section One wouldn't be here if he didn't like the team.  I too was half expecting this thread, especially if we lost.  But it's a perfect storm being created by someone who is as loud and inflamitory as he is, and the Board being in a terrible mood looking for someone to crucify.  I've seen it on most threads tonight.  People are pissed, and they will yell at people.  I just think it's unfair to question a guys fandom from this—it was definitely ill advised though.  But we shouldn't be trying to qualify eachothers fandoms, that's stupid in my opinion.

people over at the cbs board are also saying the same thing. But more than anything it's a trivial tame waster that somehow engages people endlessly here. Grade school hurhur stuff. Doesn't speak well for people here that they get off on it so much; five-six years ago you'd never have seen people going round and round about anything so goofy here.

It's funny BECAUSE it pisses them off so much. It's weird that calling them by a name that they spell out as their main school cheer is so offensive to them. It makes no sense. So, the fact that they find issue with it is stupid and funny.

And it's no different than OSU calling us "The School Up North".
