Three Future Michigan Women's Basketball Players Reach State Semis

Submitted by Raoul on

It's been a remarkable week for the women's basketball program with the team gaining its first NCAA berth in 11 years and future Wolverine Madison Ristovski receiving the Miss Basketball award.

Tonight, three teams featuring future Wolverines won quarterfinal games—in three different classes—in the MHSAA girls basketball tournament, sending all three to East Lansing for the state semifinals.

Class A: Inkster and 2012 Michigan signee Kelsey Mitchell beat Detroit King 59-40 to advance to the semis. Inkster, which is the defending Class A champion, will play Grand Haven, the team favored to win this year, on Friday at 1:00. Grand Haven also features a future Wolverine (h/t to rob6reid), Abby Cole, a 2013 volleyball commit.

In the other semi, Ann Arbor Huron will play Grosse Pointe South. Huron is led by Devin Talley, daughter of former Michigan star Michael Talley. Huron prevailed over Saginaw Arthur Hill 52-39 in their quarterfinal contest.

Class B: Goodrich and 2013 Michigan commit Taylor Gleason defeated Detroit Country Day 56-47 in their quarterfinal contest. In the semis, Goodrich (26-0 on the season) will face Dearborn Divine Child on Friday at 7:30.

Class C: Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett and Miss Basketball winner Madison Ristovski, another 2012 signee, trounced Riverview Gabriel Richard 65-29. Liggett is paired with Concord in the semis in a game scheduled for 1:00 on Thursday.

Side note on the state boys tournament: Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy and Derrick Walton Jr. (2013 men's basketball commit) will play Detroit Country Day at 7:00 tomorrow in a Class B regional final.

Thanks for pointing that out. It's interesting to note that, according to this article on her commitment to Michigan, Cole had "received some recruiting interest" from Kevin Borseth, Michigan's women's basketball coach. Borseth has since that time received a commitment from Allie Havers, a 6-foot-5 center from Mattawan, also in the class of 2013.

I produce all of the grand haven lady bucs game on wghn radio out of grand haven. Abby has amazing size but has not quite learned how to use it on the inside. she blocks am amazing number of shots (10 tonight alone) but often loses out on rebounds due to a lack of physical play. she will be a great addition to the volleyball team in a few years!

I feel obligated to give a good luck to my high school in the class D semis. We dominate girls basketball runner-up in 06, 04, and 03. Champs in 02, 00, 99, 96, 95, 94. Unfortunately its girls basketball so nobody cares :(

Goodrich is really good and extremely fun to watch.  If it wasn't for them not playing above the rim (and how they look) you would think they were a boys team. FWIW, I have no ties to Goodrich but did get to see them when announcing districts for my local HS so I'm not a homer.

I wish we could get their other guard, Civillian, to change her mind her mind about going to Penn State.  She may be even better on the track than on the court.

I forgot about her nickname, which, FYI, I've seen usually spelled KeKe. Anyway, to your original point on her: It seems like Michigan did show some interest in her, but it appears she wants to play point guard in college, and by 2013 Michigan will have a surplus of point guards on the roster, including Taylor Gleason, Madison Ristovski, and a couple of current underclassmen. Borseth needs to add a couple more frontcourt players to the 2013 class.

i saw Goodrich's Gleason in the state championship game last year, and she's definitely the real deal. At the same time, I also feel obligated to give a shoutout to my alma mater, Divine Child, as they go for their second straight state championship...go falcons!

that with football in a quiet period and basketball in a lul for most of the week, high school alma mater's are getting a lot of attention.

Not a knock on anyone in the thread, I just think it's kind of funny. I'll be watching some track events to keep up with the one athlete still competitng from my alma mater, so I'll be joining in a few weeks from now.

The Clio 4th grade boys and girls tournament is tonight. I will post when finished. Rumor is one of the girls could play at Michigan. Someone please give an update on girls soccer too. I have to go now, because I need to go watch a senior citizen checkers tournament. I hope large Marge will play checkers for us. Go blue!
