The Rivalry Bullseye

Submitted by Raback Omaba on

When looking at the upcoming season, where do ya'll think the rivalry bullseye lies with each opponent? Do you think our guys are chomping at the bit to beat OSU, ND, MSU or who else?

My inside sources tell me that our boys want to beat MSU particularly more than anyone, with OSU coming in close second. My sources tell me that our coaches are particularly aiming to run Dantonio and MSU into the ground...based on the disrespect and events (to remain nameless) that occured last year.......

If you are betting $$$$ on a major game this year, make it the MSU game...I can assure you that our coaches will get our boys playing up to this game....they will snuff out any fire that MSU has in this rivalry...the program is LIVID at how the MSU staff is handling this "rivalry"...........

One thing we need to keep in mind is, this staff is quiet....they do not publicize their discontent....so don't look at this as a slight to the OSU game, which I'm sure they will be up for and are aiming at....it's all about frying the smaller fish first.

THE BOYS AND OUR STAFF WILL BE TAKING MSU SERIOUSLY THIS YEAR...YOU WILL BE PROUD OF OUR TEAM IN EAST LANSING IN OCTOBER

I cant wait to win against those little cocky pieces of shit. One bloody fucking 9-4 season and they're the top program in Michigan according to ESPN. I can't wait to destroy those little fuckers.

and altho I think the top focus should be OSU, even though it probably still is, I might excuse that for this year.

MSU can burn and die. OSU can go 11-1 record every year with a loss to the good guys

but a lot of the bravado of the Michigan fan is based on the fact that the team has won more games than any other team in major college football.

As of right now, Michigan State IS a better program than Michigan. As of the end of this year, that may change, but you can't really argue 9-4 versus 3-9, can you?

I disagree.

One year does not a program make. History, facilities, tradition, etc, etc all go into the overall program - not just the last season's win/loss record.

There are plenty of programs that have had a number of down years recently that are still better programs than MSU overall.

...but, they have a 75,000 seat stadium, a new training complex, 6 Big Ten titles, a solid coach, great recruiting classes, and recent success. More recent than Michigan.

Based on your premise, Minnesota should be one of the power schools in the NCAA - they have multiple national titles, Heisman winners, a great new stadium. They're not - they're a middling Big Ten team.

None of what you listed above - history, facilities, tradition, mean a lick if you're not winning - ask Minnesota.

You are making two different arguements here. There is a distinct difference between a University having success and a University having a better "program" than someone else.

You said MSU had a better program than UM right now and PZ said (and I agree) that MSU having a 9-4 season last year doesn't mean they have a better program than UM.....it means they had a better team last year, period.

You may have meant something different, but that is what you said. No way MSU has a better program than UM because they had one season where they were better. Also, forget Minn. and anyone else. You said that MSU had a better program than UM and that is not the reality.

we have a 106,000+ seat stadium, a new indoor training facility, 7 Big Ten Titles (shared and outright) since MSU won their last one, a solid coach (well, at least according to history), great recruiting classes, and also "recent success."

2000- MSU's Record= 5-7. UM= 9-3
2001- MSU's Record= 7-5. UM= 8-4
2002- MSU's Record= 4-8. UM= 10-3
2003- MSU's Record= 8-5. UM= 10-3
2004- MSU's Record= 5-7. UM= 9-3
2005- MSU's Record= 5-7. UM= 7-5
2006- MSU's Record= 4-8. UM= 11-2
2007- MSU's Record= 7-6. UM= 9-4
2008- MSU's Record= 9-4. UM= 3-9

And if you're saying recent success as in only this year, I guess Utah is the second best program in the country :/. 1 win in the last 6? years doesn't make you a better program. 1 better record in the past 9 years doesn't make you a better program than Michigan.

That needs to pound MSU. I hate to say it, but it would be nice if they went 1-11, including a shellacking at the hands of Notre Dame.

MSU can survive being beaten by Michigan. I'd like a lil help from the other teams on their schedule. They have it going, they are media darlings right now--and nothing would be nicer than to see MSU go right back into the pre-Dantonio toilet. A total cave, with no bowl game (while UM goes to a nice game following hopefully about an 8-4, 9-3 season, and it will get pretty quiet on the Sparty Front.

It will be tough--they miss out on OSU this year and have shown they'll beat the teams they're supposed to now, but I'm putting my considerable Super-Psychotic Fanpower behind UM and EVERYBODY that plays Michigan State this year.

in hushed whispers tell me that the team has settled on a policy of not sucking. They aim to not suck by beating other football teams. Don't make me go on record with this stuff, plz. I'm cultivating relationships, and whatnot.

The coaching staff is probably working on improving the program's family values right now. When that is taken care of they will start focusing on football. I think MSU needs to be brought back down to earth.

Speaking of the MSU game, would I be committing a crime against Michigan football if I went and sat in the MSU student section? My cousin goes to State and he says he can get me a ticket, and it's the only way I can get to the game. At least I would be taking a seat away from a sparty.

the best way to enter enemy territory (while sitting in an enemy section) is to wear a jacket or hoody over your jersey as you enter the staduim. You wait until you are in your seats, and possibly wait until just before kickoff. Then you reveal your Michigan pride, and there isn't enough time for opposing fans to sit and ridicule you because the game has already started. It works really well in Columbus, and helps avoid getting your ass kicked outside the staduim.

I didn't agree with Rodriguez's "Hey, it's just another game" stuff regarding last year's rivalry games. These are much more than that, and I am guessing that one year under the Michigan Microscope has taught him well.

While on record as being a doubter, I can't ignore Rodriguez's Year 2 turnarounds. That tells me he gets comfy, figures out "what's what," "who's who," and gits after it.

It's good. Sometimes you get your little brother excited and stuff when you're playing pickup basketball, let him get the lead, then you just come back and take it back.

I'm as pissed about Sparty's behavior as anyone, but look at this board - we sound like them. Replace all the "MSU"s with "UM"s and vice-versa, and this could pass for an RCMB post. We're a better program and fanbase than they are, and we know it - we don't need to obsess about them the way they do us.

EDIT - I know there are worse offenders on the Mgoboard, but I've been getting fed up with all the Dantonio/MSU stuff recently and this post had the bad luck of being the first Sparty-centric thing I read today.

Aside from the obviously sarcastic comments, which are 100% pure awesome, I think we should think twice about some of the things that are said around here.

I think that has been a tenet of the mgoblog community - even since the pre-message board days - and I hope given the continued rise in readership and reader participation that it does not change too significantly.

I fully support Brian making repeat announcements to this effect or making sure that people read through posting guidelines & site mantra before signing up or something.

nothing more than i want right now then to see state get destroyed this year!!! i am tired of their fans acting like the "gap" has been closed, and that they can now beat us every year from here on out. if there is one coach in the big 10 that needs to be taken behind the wood shed it is dantonio!!!

this just got me more fired up then i already was!!! 30 DAYS AND COUNTING UNTIL SEPT 5TH!!! GO BLUE!!!

My inside sources corroborate this as well. They said that the team wants to "win games".

Then they gave me my extra-value meal.

It's only a matter of time before Weis decides there isn't enough spotlight on him (and really, isn't that asking a LOT of the spotlight? . . . ) and decides to say something really stupid.

The media won't let the ND-UM game happen without the requisite level of hype.
Usually Weis (and his gravitational field) find a way to provide it.
We should have a countdown to Weis' pre game insult; I'm predicting no less than 3 weeks before the game.

I'm still hoping we get his other knee this year.

Seriously though, what if the MSM got this "inside information"? What would the headline be?

"Michigan Players Focused on Winning Games".

This is inside info?

I'm sure they could use their expert analysis to find a story or two with this newfound goldmine of inside information.

1. Michigan tires of being pwned by MSU, vows revenge.

2. Despite the complete lack of family values, Michigan plans on competing.

3. As players bail in droves from UM, RR counts on snake oil for 09 season.

4. Despite Charlie Weis' schematic advantage, Michigan decides NOT to forfeit.
