Bowling Green beats Ferris 4-3 in OT (M to play BGSU at the Joe)
The Bulldogs blew a 3-1 third period lead and lost on an early OT goal by BGSU, who we will see next in the semifinal and who gave us fits two weeks ago.
In other Pairwise-relevant news, Harvard demolished Yale 8-2, which keeps the Elis out of TUC-land, helping us in our comparison with Cornell.
BU beats UNH in a decisive game 3, 5-4 in double OT and Maine is leading Merrimack 2-1 after 2 periods. I'm not sure what Michigan's rooting interests were, but those are the scores.
BU's goalie made 68 saves. NBD.

I wish I had ever played on a team that had 68 shots. I doubt those youth tournament blowout games ever got 68 shots from a single team, even when winning 13-1 or whatever.
What's the NCAA record for saves? I doubt it's much more than 68.
Edit: 77 is the record dating back to 1965. That's incredible.
come on BGSU..
Ferris had a 3-0 lead after the 1st, and BG got one in the 2nd and one early in the 3rd.
About 9:00 to go.
I would rather not play Bowling Green, never want to face the hot team/goalie in a single elimination format.
Bowling Green ties it at 3.
3-3 now.
3:21 to go.
BGSU ties it up
. BGSU comes roaring back to tie it at 3-all, with 4 minutes left in the third period!
4 minutes in regulation
With 4 min left in 3rd
Come on bowling green, you can do it. I wanna see ferris make an early exit so badly.
BGSU ties the game at 3 with just over 4 to go
Going to OT
BGSU and FSU going to overtime...I don't even know who I want to play...but this run by the Falcons is truly incredible.
Going to OT
This is the most tense I've been for a non-Michigan, non-Detroit sporting event in a good long while. I don't have a strong interest either way, but I'm on pins and needles still...
DeSalvo had at least two of BGSU's goals, and he had a bunch of the goals last weekend against Northern. If we do end up playing against them, he has to be the top dangerman.
GOAL BGSU!
WINS 4-3
BOWLING GREEN SCORES!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Holy crap...BGSU wins about 3 minutes into OT
Wow. Congrats BGSU.
Biggest upset in college hockey!?
4-3.
DeSalvo with a natural hat trick for the win...absolutely bonkers
March 11th, 2012 at 10:02 PM ^
I thought natural hat tricks had to be in the same period, or is it just with no other scoring?
March 11th, 2012 at 10:09 PM ^
then I stand corrected, but I always thought that it was with no one else scoring in between. (Edit: Wikipedia says uninterrupted in one game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hat-trick#Natural_Hat_Trick )
But Ferris was good this year. It may be less luck and more that BGSU just figured something out. I'm thinking we should be a little worried.
years. That's incredible I'm speechless.
Now lets not make it two upsets in a row for them. They play us tough. I'm a little nervous heading into the semi-finals with them. They are certainly on a roll but we are still playing god too. Will be an exciting game.
Holy Cross over Minnesota in the NCAA tournament (2006).
This is an ideal situation for Michigan. They now take the 1 spot over and will play bowling green. Michigan will face the winner of western/miami in the Championship Game IF they can beat bowling green. western and miami are gonna beat the hell out of one another.
Beating bowling green is not gonna be easy. Throw the records out, Michigan is playing a team who is playing for their lives and has just made history. I have confidence that Michigan will come into JLA with fire and wanting to pulverize bowling green for that upset a few weeks ago.
Holy crap. We deff. should not take BGSU lightly. The semis are not a series right they are 1 and done right?
So what's our rooting interest for Miami vs. Western? Do we root for Miami b/c we want the higher ranked team in the finals (if we beat BG), or do we want Western to win to increase the chances that they stay in the tournament at the bottom, increasing the chances that we, instead of BC, will get to play the AHA champ?
We got to beat Bowling Green first...
but in the interests of winning the CCHA title, I'd rather play Miami. Western, similar to Northern, always plays us hard and plays us close and as we all probably remember, Western smoked us last year in the semi's. On the other hand, we've had a great record against Miami in the CCHA tournament lately.

I think Miami is a much scarier team, they definately played us tough this season, and Smith is really hot right now.

Duluth is the only team left that can pass us. If they win out, they will pass us no matter what. If we lose to Miami or Western, then Duluth just has to reach the WCHA championship to pass us. Long story short, we should root for the team that we are most likely to beat.
March 12th, 2012 at 12:23 AM ^
UMD is not the only team that can pass us. I have just run one scenario, which is not all that unlikely, and can already get BU, Minnesota, and Union to pass/tie us and win the tiebreak. This scenario is not all that unlikely either, with mostly chalk minus Michigan tanking the CCHA tournament. You can play with your own scenarios at http://www.uscho.com/rankings/pwp/
The scenario where we end up 5th overall is:
Your Picks
Atlantic Hockey
- Semifinal #2: RIT defeats Niagara
- Semifinal #1: Air Force defeats Mercyhurst
- Championship game: Air Force defeats RIT
CCHA
- Semifinal #2: Western Michigan defeats Miami
- Semifinal #1: Bowling Green defeats Michigan
- Championship game: Western Michigan defeats Bowling Green
- Consolation game: Miami defeats Michigan
ECAC
- Semifinal #2: Cornell defeats Harvard
- Semifinal #1: Union defeats Colgate
- Championship game: Union defeats Cornell
- Consolation game: Harvard defeats Colgate
Hockey East
- Semifinal #2: Boston University defeats Maine
- Semifinal #1: Boston College defeats Providence
- Championship game: Boston University defeats Boston College

- Semifinal #2: Minnesota-Duluth defeats Denver
- Semifinal #1: Minnesota defeats North Dakota
- Championship game: Minnesota defeats Minnesota-Duluth
I almost want bgsu to beat us. It would be really big for their program.

little guy going the distance in tournaments. A part of me is pulling for them right now. It's great to see Cinderella teams make the impossible come true and for their program it would be incredible!
Plus we're already in but it would help with our seeding going into the NCAA tournament.
March 11th, 2012 at 10:18 PM ^
I'd say if we were meeting in the finals I'd agree. If that were the case, we'd have the #2 overall seed locked up and it probably wouldn't hurt to lose. If we win, awesome. If we lose, pretty cool to see BGSU sneak into the tourney.
Unfortunately, that's not the case. And we must break them
#1 tip on how to be a Michigan fan: root for Michigan.
You're rooting against Shawn Hunwick? And for a team from Ohio?
Madness.
March 12th, 2012 at 10:08 AM ^
I would never want Michigan to lose!!! ugh....weird "fans". Maybe those are the same questionable fans who wanted Michigan to lose so Rich Rod would get fired? Or maybe they are just drunk. who knows? bizarre.
Ferris drops to a mid-#2 seed. Miami is up to the last #1.
The good news: Two things. There is now no way for Michigan to lose out on a #1 seed. Also, if Duluth doesn't win out, we stay ahead of them regardless of our performance at the Joe.
The bad news: there are two things. First, if Duluth wins out, they will pass Michigan for the second #1 seed. Second, it makes it harder to have two CCHA #1 seeds, which would help Michigan to draw the AHA champ. Instead, we might draw the best #4 seed in the first round even as the second best overall team.

Wow. How does a team like Bowling Green, which had won only 5 CCHA games all season, win 4 in the playoffs, on the road, against some of the top competition in the league? I know it's hockey, but still, pretty amazing.
I hope Michigan can stop them next week before they become a team-of-destiny kind of story, like M in 2010. It sucks, but we have to be the Miami to their Michigan (without the help of the refs in overtime).
Any word on what time the games will be on Friday? I would love to see the Michigan-BGSU game at 4 so it doesn't conflict with the basketball team. Are the powers that be in the CCHA smart enough to not schedule them at the same time?
March 11th, 2012 at 11:25 PM ^
Since we're the top remaining seed, I'm going to say we're the late game at 8 PM.
CCHA.com says times will be announced Monday morning.
