I imagine that game will get very good ratings, and they are only paying $500k to App State for the rematch. The AD is going to make a boatload of money from that game, and I believe people will definitely feel some kind of necessary redemption(assuming we win).

They were second to last in their divison last year.  Even if they win the pac-12 south, they still have to beat probably Oregon or Cal to get to the Rose Bowl.

Not impossible, but an upward climb for sure.

Considering how he was treated here, I am not surprised he's bitter.

As far as how he would have done last year, IMO the offense would have been nearly unstoppable.  The defense.... uh.... yeah, well...

I still don't understand this. He came in, decided to "make his own cake from scratch", the team went 15-22 in 3 years, and somehow he should have been treated better? He was treated as a guy who comes in and goes 3-9, 5-7, and 7-6 should be treated at Michigan. He received criticism for his performance as coach, then got the boot.

Hey cool, another opportunity for me to say how glad I am that Rich Rod is nowhere near this program.

Media being media, RR will be asked THE inflammatory question countless times, in hopes of an inflammatory response.  The media reminds me of a woman in a trailer park trying to get two men to get into a fistfight over her.

RR is honest, and really didn't say anything that is newsworthy here.  Besides, almost anyone here would feel the same way he did if they were treated like RR was at Michigan.  I wonder how many here would have the restraint that RR has in his remarks if they were in his shoes?  My guess: not very many.

He could have just said "I know that this would have been the year, but unfortunately it didn't work out. But I'm happy for those kids, they deserved it." It answers the question and also leaves no room for people to complain about it. Would anyone be enraged or discussing something like that?

ETA: I just realized how Hoke like the second part sounds. Please don't ever give us a reason to fire you Hoke.

but there is no way in hell last years Michigan team goes 10-2 with an invite to the Sugar  Bowl under your leadership.  You were looking at hiring your 3rd fricking defensive coordinator in 4 years and you undoubtedly would have interferred with that side of ball by the MSU game.

None, zero, zip, zilch.   Enjoy Arizona.

be the only person who with out any doubt knowsour team 132 would have never been as good as they were under Hoke. Rich Rod din't coach, nor could find a coach who knew anything about defense. I am sorry he may have recruited most of the kids on the team, and had one hell of an offense, our defense was a freaking joke. And in my mind only two people could have turned it around so quic and they are Hoke, and Mattison, not Rich Rod or Gerg, or even Casteel (sp?) for a motter of fact. Goodbye Rich and and you wont be missed, we have our guy and thank the stars and whoever else like God we now have him. End of this story cause we won, Rich Rod is gone.

I'm tired of hearing what a victim this man was.  Real leaders don't need to whine about everything under the sun.  Brady Hoke came in here, offered zero excuses, and got to work.

RichRod was called an attention whore for playing score-o at a hockey game before he was coach. Hoke was praised for not playing score-o and making it all about the kids.  Comparing how each coach acted when they got here is pointless for this reason alone. No one knows how either coach would have acted had the roles been reversed (Hoke had to deal with "Lloyd Carr's Michigan" on Monday Night Football or RichRod would have had an AD who cared how he looked to the fanbase).

I mean anyone who would play Score-O BEFORE he was coach must want attention. No wonder West Virginia was so pissed at him; rather than preparing for Pitt he was shooting pucks at another school he wasn't even a coach at!

How they didn't see that he was leaving coming....

Why can't he remember this from his first press conference in Ann Arbor and just shut the hell up.  Nobody believes him, including guys like Molk and RVB who talked about the changes Hoke brought to the team whenever they were asked.

"There's an old movie called The Lion King. There's a scene in the movie where a monkey hits the lion over the head, and the lion says, 'What'd you do that for?' and the monkey says, 'It doesn't matter, it's in the past.' "

That quote epitomizes the culture shock that the Michigan fanbase went through during the RR era.

We went from Lloyd Carr who quoted Rudyard Kipling, to RR who quoted Rafiki from the Lion King.

And you can be pretty sure it wasn't the Broadway play verison of the Lion King.  It was the Lion King cartoon.

and to be all but invisible during the RR years to one who espoused the greatness of the hiring of BH, a true "Michigan Man" wtf is that, anyway? and one who was regulardy seen at home games during the 2011 season.  He is a fucking crybaby who didn't get to watch his OC Debord become HC.

I agree with the poster above who was talking about the "Bad Fit" scenario, but there were many outside forces that helped bring the man down, one who was willing to have his alma mater placed on probation for stretchgate because all his other miserable attempts at digging up dirt in a well cemented area proved as fruitless as one could imagine before attempting such a daunting task.  RR was a bad fit here, but I think he learned something. No matter what team he coaches in the future, he had better get someone on his sidelines from Day one who knows 80% as much about defense as he does about driving the opposing coordinator crazy on offense. That, in the end, was RR's undoing here.  He's a damn fine coach, and his staff worked their asses off. He brought in some great talent, among them the most exciting offensive player we've had play in the Big House in a number of years.

He would have been good here. He will be good anywhere where immediate success is not required for retention. It took him awhile to find his place no matter where he coached. Michigan demands, and rightfully so, to have someone who is ready to meet the needs immediately and BH has proven to be that man. We should be very thankful for that. But all one has to do is remember BH and Mattison did not one recruit from last season's team. He was assembling a roster that had been all but neglected under his predecessor; facts such as having 65 players and 21 defensive players on the roster of the winningest program in D1 history just don't lie.  If BH had taken over immediately, he would have taken three years to get the program back to our expected norm. LC left it in just terrible shape but somehow wishes to be remembered for his wins only and not his shortcomings, and too many members of the media are more than happy to abide by his wishes.

and it fell flat...tell RR to STFU about Michigan already NOTHING he did indicated success..Hoke took the same players and won 11 games Beat Ohio and won the Sugar Bowl..Hoke did that not RR

Team 132 was Hokes team.  They played for him the way he asked them to play.  He put them in winning situations all year long.

There were a lot of guys invited to play by RR, but they learned to win with Hoke and his staff.

Let it go man!

Any Michigan fan using the name of Hoke or his staff to take shots at RR is just as weak as his excuses for not actually doing well at Michigan.  RR had a combination of faults and obstacles, too many to overcome.  Few people could have taken the leftover-lemon situation after MSU's (NNTMSU--sparty didn't win a bowl until 2 months ago) bowl victory and then coach it into the sweet, sweet lemonade that Hoke and staff have produced.  So, what's the problem with using their success to disparage RR?

None of us were rooting for Hoke to be our coach after RR.

I chose to support RR as I did Carr (despite his faults) when he was coach.  Others divisively called or cried for Harbaugh (for all his coaching success, he doesn't have the personality of Hoke, and there are no guaranteed successes at Michigan).  There were even those who--during those times of adversity--quit on teams 129, 130 and 131; if you doubt this statement, ask RVB.

My point is: I think the RR era was meant to show Michigan fans that success is not guaranteed and never comes easily. This past season, he would have been better than 7-5 but not as good as Hoke's 11-2, imo.  Let's just be better fans than we were during those weeks Brandon fired RR and hired Hoke.  Let's take the high road on RR as a topic and just not comment; let it go, truly.

Just a thought. go blue.

You're smart enough to spot the obvious hyperbole I used there. I obviously cannot know each & every mgoblog-user's position on RR's successor. I know nobody supported Hoke's hiring w as much passion as they now do in touting his success. What's weak is using that success somehow as proof that RR wouldn't have improved.

March 8th, 2012 at 11:24 PM ^

I didn't even say anything about Rich in this long thread. Just your "hyperbole" that none of us wanted Hoke. And I was hardly the only one. (And no, I don't mean Brandon too) It went from some who did a little homework, to a number after he was hired, to the majority after his press conference, growing with coaching hires, to everyone (who's not still fighting the civil war) after an 11-2 season....but at that point it's kinda "duh". If there's more passion after belief turns to reality...well, duh again.

I think you're mixing two different posts, and styles of posting. The "RR sucks and never would have gotten better" hate, and the "they would have improved, but not THIS much, as Rich keeps claiming", who use that as a comparison. A valid one, because the rate the team was improving would have put them at 9 wins. (With no regression for losing by big margins but only winning by a little). To think the team would make a big leap with an offense that might have been a little bit better (it actually improved over 2010, but reasonably it would improve that much more with the same system), but the defense only improving a little bit (because what REALLY changed was immense improvement in the D) with that defensive staff, or a new one and another new system, hired and overseen by Rich is certainly something people can reasonably argue.

And they wouldn't have to, but Rich keeps claiming it and bringing it back up. And making people less sympathetic along the way.
