OT - O-zone tweet claims Hoke ripped on Urban Meyer at Detroit Athletic Club
Because I hate myself to the point of masochism and don't always have bamboo shivs to ram under my fingernails, I sometimes listen to 97.1 The Fan in Columbus. The evening host, Adam Neft, was talking about a tweet from the O-zone beat writer. In it, the O-zone guy claims that Brady Hoke brought up Urban's arrest record, as a response to the now infamous snackademic sign at the Woody Hayes Center.

I did not hear this directly, but it came from someone on our board who was in attendance this morning.
That was Hoke speaking at the Detroit Athletic Club this morning when asked about Ohio State's poster comparing college majors to UM
Brady Hoke on Meyer: "We dont recruit negatively, I'm not going to mention 30 felonies in 5 years that happened in his previous program."
So, this is all secondhand at best. It doesn't sound like something Hoke would say out loud to the media, but who knows. It'll be interesting to see if it's true and if this bit makes the rounds in Columbus, where they still think - let's see if I can quote them directly on this - Jabbe the cHoke negatively recruited kyle kACLis to scUM /rabblerabblecoolerpoopers

I don't see the problem.
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:52 PM ^
I can see the problem being that - if he made that comment - it is not factual. There were 30 arrests -- not 30 felonies. That's an enormous difference.

February 23rd, 2012 at 9:02 PM ^
Could that be one of those cases where he exaggerated to make a point?
Plus, he was off the record explaining WHY he doesn't recruit negatively. I see nothing wrong.
February 24th, 2012 at 9:50 AM ^
If he said that, I think your second point seems to make the most sense in the context of the situation.
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:41 PM ^
That doesn't even sound like the sentence structure Hoke would use to get that message across. I call BS.
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:43 PM ^
That's what I was thinking, it's missing a lot of "wells" and he never says "tremendous." Also, Hoke is always positive when he talks about other institutions, I don't see him changing that, now or ever.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:08 PM ^
Especially if directed at the media.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:20 PM ^
BS is holding on line 133.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:24 PM ^
I don't get it, all you did was post a picture of a scoreboard. oh wait
February 24th, 2012 at 8:02 AM ^
They took the score down almost immediately after the game was over. I wanted a picture of the score but couldn't get it because I was too busy crying in my buddies arm. By the time I looked up they had that days since we beat Ohio clock ticking down and never showed the score again. You must have a quick trigger finger my friend.
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:42 PM ^
BULL he isnt gonna give that creep any more motivation or bullitein board stuff. If he ever did it would be in his office or home between only ears that would never say anything.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:28 PM ^
at least publicly. It reminds me of when Mike White was coaching Illinois and bringing in all the jucos. The week before we played them, Bo said: "Illinois has a lot of good players and I understand they have a few more coming in this week." I miss him.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:59 PM ^
How would this be bulletin board material? What would it do - motivate OSU players to not commit crimes?
February 23rd, 2012 at 10:16 PM ^
Plus, Meyer could always throw Stonum, Cissoko and some others in our face. I still doubt this happened anyway, but coaches (ie. non-SEC coaches) know better to go down that path.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:29 PM ^
Only Stonum would apply to Hoke
February 24th, 2012 at 1:07 PM ^
So this imaginary quote attributed to Hoke would've been silly to dredge up since he's at a different school. Both schools are in glass houses when it comes to off the field stuff, so that's one reason why I know none of this stuff was true.
February 24th, 2012 at 2:10 PM ^
So? Getting into a war of words over off-field stuff is pointless.
Saying something like, "Braxton Miller sucks and will never beat us," now that would be bulletin board material.
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:44 PM ^
I would have said more than that just on instinct
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:44 PM ^
It's not in keeping with Hoke's character. I don't believe this. Just don't.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:06 PM ^
It's just not something Hoke would say, he's got too much class for that.
You know, it seems to me that ohio fans just try to glum on to anything they can to either make fun of his weight, which is not as bad as they make it out to be or made up bulletin board stuff cause they see what Hoke is all about and it scares the hell out of them but they would never admit.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:16 PM ^
is it something Hoke would have "too much class for"? A line that is "just not something that Hoke would say"?
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:44 PM ^
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:17 PM ^
...no way...
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:44 PM ^
Probably bullshit. Doesn't sound like something Hoke would say for a variety of reasons, and it's a secondhand source given to a columbus station. Even if he actually said it, it was to boosters so it can be excused, and he's not exactly wrong about it.
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:17 PM ^
...probably bullshit...
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:45 PM ^
It would be unwise for Urban to pick a fight with Hoke. It's evident that Hoke has earned the respect of his coaching peers in the B10. Conversely, Urban has already alienated himself by pissing off two of the more prominant coaching staffs in the conference. It wouldn't take a stretch of imagination to see this becoming 1 on 11 after everyone takes sides.

I don't know either. But they must be green with envy at all the crap Meyer is doing to them,
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:59 PM ^
Somebody (MGoBlog) had to have been there. I think they had something like 125 people there.
Now, there was another U-M Club of Greater Detroit luncheon at the DAC on Valentine's Day with Jeff Hecklinski and Chris Singletary; I couldn't make that one either. (Limited to the first 80 reservations.) I wonder if they are mixing up Hoke and Hecklinski?
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:58 PM ^
I may just call them from work tomorrow...
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:52 PM ^
Yeah, he's not going to mention it to the players and negatively recruit. WHo cares if he said it to a room full of coaches?
February 23rd, 2012 at 7:55 PM ^
As soon as he wrote "I did not hear this directly" he should have stopped right there. You heard this from someone that posts on your board? Really? One source. Unless I hear this from other sources, I will also call BS.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:00 PM ^
I came across this earlier over on 247, a poster over there says he was in attendance reported the same thing. Personally, I love it.

Ok, so it was in response to Meyer taking a shot at UM's academics (lol), in which case awesome. I'm sure it got some laughs, it was not uncalled for, and he's right, after all. He would never say this to the press, or to a recruit, so I don't see much wrong with it.
Also, cool tactic by forcing the players to wear red after a low-effort practice. Reminiscent of Bo.
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:09 PM ^
...having fun with this. Ten denials that Hoke would ever say such a thing, followed by confirmation, followed by, 'Of course Hoke said it! Why wouldn't he say it? Meyer deserved it!'
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:16 PM ^
"You mean Ohio?" - Coach Hoke
February 23rd, 2012 at 9:37 PM ^
Don't fight the hivemind, just relax and go with it man. Meyer does deserve it. Oh, and it's Ohio.
February 23rd, 2012 at 11:25 PM ^
Ah, as you can see... many MGoBloggers were trained at the Huge Chavez School of Editors.
No one likes honesty if it isn't the truth.

Yes, he's the younger brother of Hugo Chavez.

Section 1, you really kill a lot of your good points with general attitude. I respect that you're an educated guy with a broad and critical perspective, but I wonder if you realize how much more impact you could have by removing the douche-ness from your posts.
February 24th, 2012 at 1:10 AM ^
Oh nooo the fine people over at Bucknuts or wherever the hell they congregate won't think we're cooooool.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:08 PM ^
If he did then I am glad he did. DooshUrban calls out Michigan academics, Brady and anyone with the university can call his ass out for his sketchy past...my god I hate this guy so much, more so than Tressel
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:00 PM ^
Funny it's the same O-zone who was yelling about how Meyer was destroying Hoke on the recruiting trail. I'm sure either it's probably a misquote on the 30 felonies or whatever. You shouldn't have to use negative recruiting , the parents should do their jobs and research who they are leaving their kids with. If you don't have my kids best interst in mind , I don't want him playing for your school. That goes for Alabama , Michigan or Washington and trust me I'd trade my vital organs for my kid to play for Michigan
February 23rd, 2012 at 8:01 PM ^
From the thread title I assumed Coach Hoke had "allegedly" crop-dusted Meyer at some coaches convention. The actual non-story is way less entertaining.

...smells like farts.
I kind of like it.

I was fortunate enough to know someone that let me tag a long with them this morning. I personally took no offense to this. Someone asked the question to Hoke if he heard about the poster Meyer had made comparing Michigan FB players vs Ohio's FB players majors. Hoke fired back a response. No harm No Foul. He was a lot of things today. This was supposed to be a private off the record affair but as the moderator tolk Brady this is off the record today he responded " yeah sure it is". He knew stuff would get out. I did not think it was a big deal at all and actually it was quite funny.
